    DSG Transmission rattle/vibration in reverse??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all.
2011 B8 S4 DSG owner here. Had the car for about 2 years, its sitting at 68K Miles now since 46K Miles when i bought it.
Car has been absolutely trouble free except today when i started to notice a violent rattle noise from the transmission when i put the car in reverse and start moving in action.
Drivability wise, Going forward is perfectly fine, shifts gear smoothly (even reverse is fine, just the rattling noise). No fault codes at all. Rattling noise only happens in reverse. I searched but cant seem to find anyone with a similar problem.
Is my Mech unit going out? am i in deep trouble?

I did perform the dsg trans service at a local audi/vw indy shop @ 52K Miles so about 16K Miles ago.

Please help with any input, this is starting to really bug me

Do You have a trans mount insert? Mine helped eliminate some vibration.

Yeah. For around 50 bucks and 10 min of time it’s prob the cheapest potential solution. I still have some vibration but it’s not what it was.

anyone else with this issue? ill be uploading the symptom video soon..
What i've also noticed is that the rattling noise only happens when i have the foot gently on the brake and start moving in reverse with no gas. If i tap the pedal and give it a a bit of gas the rattling noise goes away. I park in a tight parkade condo and everytime i reverse the car in to park i smash the gas instead of coasting with the brake on just not to hear the rattle..

Hey jpark, did you happened to record a video? I might have similar thing.

Need help, just picked up mine 2012/7 made, restyle (b8.5) pre owned 55k miles no warranty, it's shaking sometimes when in reverse uphill only (backing up in a garage, not steep grade). Also seems like goes out of gear for a bit and then drives again, during that it's slight vibration and rpms not going over 1400. It's happening on and off. Please help. Could it be tranny low on oil?
No dash lights and VSDC is clean, no faults.

I lost my sleep over past couple of days.

Mine just started today as well, 136K Miles. just recently serviced my dsg less then 1k miles ago. Just got the vehicle back from a failed fuel pump as well.
My other b8 just spend 4k on a motor swap earlier this week. no breaks!

Same problem. Only when I first start the car in the morning. Backing up slowly causes a light shudder when easing onto the brake. Did any one lock this problem down?
I’m thinking possibly a loose or broken subframe mount bolt because it started shortly after installing rear subframe mount kit but that could be a coincidence. FYI I have both trans mounts, rear diff and subframe mounts and motor mount upgrades so I assumed it was a matter of time before the added stiffness tweaked something. I hope it’s not a dsg issue although I fear it might be due to it only happening when it’s cold. Thoughts? Similar problems?

im DSG and have something similar. I have already had my mech board replaced once fyi. i don't notice it if im backing out of my driveway in the mornings (thats when i get a slight shudder)- but after ive been driving for a bit, and then throw it into reverse to back in to a spot or something. it just sounds like something's a bit crunchy or rattling somewhere when moving, but i cant seem to find anything. shop says they don't see anything either. thinking it might be internal :(

i can say that the sound is not getting any worse over time, but i really don't like it.

Did anyone figure this out I seem to be having a similar noise while reversing out of my steep driveway and just easing off brake.

Reverse would typically cause my rpms to drop and create vibration. I now have an EPL tcu tune and the issue is minimized. 2010 b8 135k miles

Trans tune fixed it for me.

Has anyone ever come up with an answer to this rattle sound? I've got exactly the same thing going on

Probably unrelated but I recently noticed a terrifying clunk/rattle when in reverse on my 6MT. I'll add that I also had some rattle going over steep speed bumps that I had chalked up to possibly being normal as I bought the car recently and thought it might have been the spare tire in the back as well.

Had my mechanic take a look and it turns out 3 of the nuts for the transmission mounts (I think) were straight up missing. No idea when or how it happened but ended up being a cheap fix and solved all of the above issues (thank god). Sounds dumb, but maybe make sure all bolts are there and are torqued to spec.

2013 S4, DSG, 106K miles. Same reverse clunking noise, on flat surface, turning or not. Slight vibration when driving slowly in 2nd gear, like over a bump or from a stop sign when gear doesn't drop to 1st.
No trans codes, all other gears work fine. Did the clutch adaptation, but that didn't fix it.
Car was serviced mostly at dealer, including 75k DSG service.
I'm going to try the adaptation again. I'm inclined to believe it's the solenoid that controls the K2 clutch (2,4, 6, reverse gears) so if adaptation doesn't work, most likely will look into either do the mech kit and maybe the clutch kit.

Anybody with this type of noise tried to hoist the car and test if the noise persists in reverse? I mean if you can lift it and run the reverse, noise should be present if it's mech or clutch related.

Having this exact issue. Happened after launch control car popped out of gear while shifting into 2nd. Reverse grinding off the brake pedal and shudder in 2nd at slow speeds. Did you find the issue ?

Having this same issue, started just after I flushed and changed DSG fluids.

My car also has the APR stage 2 Engine and DSG tune on it. Been doing lots of reading but no clear direction on source of the problem.

    Any insights would be excellent.

For those who have the same issue I had in 2022, in the end took the car to the dealer for diagnosis. They updated the firmware on the DSG and all went back to normal.
Car is now at 112K, and I didn't do any other maintenance on the trans yet.
