    Lets build a fast(er) RS7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello
I've had my RS7 for eight months now.
Bought it with turbo-back milltek and a stage 2 tune
But I want to go faster so now I have decided to change turbos, intercooler, fuel pump etc.
If there is interest, I will gladly update the thread
Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Sweden

    Started to dismantle everything

There is always interest in go fast builds. What turbos are you thinking of going with?

Of course we are interested! Anybody going beyond intake/exhaust/tune pushes the whole platform further.

Agreed. Someone on the FB group recently was talking about how the RS3 was faster than the RS7. Of course they cited the APR RS3 that had a stripped out interior, new turbos, ecu, fuel pump, intercooler, etc. Problem is that no one has taken such radical steps on an RS7 like that until now to see what kind of power can truly be unleashed. Color me interested.

The RS7 will never compete with a built RS3 on a drag strip. They are running 9 flat with upgrades. You won't see an RS7 run that, no matter what you do.

Exactly, and soon to be running 8s. The RS3 already has more tuner development in 1 year than the RS7 has had in 6!

I'd still rather have an RS7 though.

Tuners have barely scratched the surface of this platform.

The vast majority of people modifying them are just utilizing bolt-ons.

As the platform falls into the second and third hand owners, and more of them come out of warranty. They’re gonna get real fast.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a 9 flat out of someone by the end of this summer/fall, and one creeping into the 8’s by next year.

We’ve been saying this in the AMG world since the mid 2000s and with very rare exception, it hasn’t happened. The only thing you can really count on as these cars get passed onto their 3rd/etc owners is the riff-raff ruining the forums!

That RS7 would have to be on one hell of a diet to drop over a half a ton to keep up with an RS3! Probably never happen...

Both platforms are nice in there own way. I currently have a 2014 s6 with rs7 turbos and was hoping large turbos would become more common as the prices of these cars came down but at this point I don’t believe that this will happen. I also have a tuned 2015 A3 that is nice too, it’s not on the same level as the S6 of coarse but I like the car. I’m now looking at possibly selling both of them and building a big turbo RS3….

No way I would change my RS6 for an RS3 just because it is faster at the strip.... you can't even go on holiday with an RS3 with a family of 4.

    Huge class between these cars.

That compressor wheel in the picture you posted has seen a lot of dirt, and that dirt has damaged the leading edge of the compressor wheel.

That dirt has also made its way into your engine.

It may cost you a small amount of horsepower in the short term, but damaged compressor wheels leading to decreased compressor efficiency and diminished compression due to ingestion of dirt damaging the piston rings and cylinder walls will cost you a lot more. I’m a huge advocate for running OEM style filters for these two reasons alone.

The damage to the compressor wheels also throws off the balance of the turbocharger, which leads to shorter turbo life in the long run as a result of increased thrust loads on the thrust collar and bearings.

In the interest of preventing further damage to the compressor wheels, as well as keeping dirt out of the engine you may want to reconsider the style of filter you are running.

Do you have any objective data to support OEM filters/intakes do a better job? Not arguing, just would like to see some actual test results.

A lot of experience with cone filters vs OEM style filters on a wide range of turbocharged engines.

Generally on street cars that I’ve pulled apart with a cone style filter. There is almost always damage on the leading edge of the compressor blades.

If you’re running a race car that only sees the track, and every last ounce of performance needs to be accounted for, while operating in an environment generally free of dust and debris then the cone filter is the obvious choice due to the relatively low restriction.

If you’re gonna be driving the car on the street. An OEM air filter is the way to go.

I’ve seen way too many street cars with beat up compressor blades running an oiled cone or drop in filter.

    They’re too porous.

    Check this out.

Thanks. So OEM style for daily, K&Ns for the track. I wonder if I can find Delco filters for my SRM intakes. Lol

SRM offers an option to have their intake mate with the factory air box, at least that's my understanding

While an RS3 may be faster, it will never be even close to the range of class as an RS7
