That compressor wheel in the picture you posted has seen a lot of dirt, and that dirt has damaged the leading edge of the compressor wheel.
That dirt has also made its way into your engine.
It may cost you a small amount of horsepower in the short term, but damaged compressor wheels leading to decreased compressor efficiency and diminished compression due to ingestion of dirt damaging the piston rings and cylinder walls will cost you a lot more. I’m a huge advocate for running OEM style filters for these two reasons alone.
The damage to the compressor wheels also throws off the balance of the turbocharger, which leads to shorter turbo life in the long run as a result of increased thrust loads on the thrust collar and bearings.
In the interest of preventing further damage to the compressor wheels, as well as keeping dirt out of the engine you may want to reconsider the style of filter you are running.
