    3.0T engine differences

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Is there a difference between the 3.0T long blocks of a 2010 A6 auto and a 2011 S4 manual?

I heard there mY be a difference in the crankshafts, but as I work for an engine manufacturer that would crazy to think they have different long blocks for the same base engine that goes in multiple cars.

I have to replace my engine is why I'm asking.

As I am aware, there is no physical differences in the blocks of both motors.

    3.0T engine differences

Great to hear. I ended up having metal in my oil and the engine was starting to seize. Had a bad misfire in cylinder number 5. Piston is coming apart I believe as the metal was aluminum.

I'll know more soon. I've already removed the engine from the S4. Now need to pull the one from my A6. Gonna do timing chains/tensioners and guides while I'm in there along with new Tstat water pump and carbon cleaning of the intake valves.

I plan on rebuilding my motor after so i have a swing engine.

No physical diff at all? but something is different. Maybe it’s just tuned in the s4 as there is a 33 HP difference from the factory.

All I said was the block is the same. I do not know about the internals (pistons, crank, cams, etc) but I doubt there is any there as well. The 3.0t was born in the A6 and then adapted to the S4 so it probably just boils down to tuning.

That sounds like a pretty unfortunate failure. German manufacturing efficiency would make me think that the blocks are for sure the same, but I've been wrong before.

I’m sorry that came out wrong. I was not questioning you , I was honestly asking a question based on the HP differences only.

No apologies and I didn’t take it in any way negative. We all learn here by asking questions.

I think the most differences will be with sensors and some wiring differences.

Cams are different for sure. But other than that physically they are the same. 2010 a6 will have CCAA engine code with 290 vs a 333 from the s4. As far as I know its software and cams nothing else. I had a 2010 CCAA torn down to nothing just look up my thread if you have any questions.

Cams are definitely the same. I think the tune alone netted the HP.

My mistake I was using 2015 s5 engine I have for comparison. In that case I would assume tune only.

To my knowledge the crank and supercharger are different from each other, but take that with a grain of salt.

Blocks should be the same. How many miles are you at?

I verified the crank and SC already. They are the same too. I was really comcerned about the crank reluctor wheel.

    I'm at 117,000

I picked up a used S/C from a 2015 Q5 3.0T donor vehicle. My plan is to get it ported & slap it on my A6 with the DP set up. I know that the superchargers are compatible but I thought I read somewhere that the early gen s/c like the ones in the C6.5 3.0T does not perform as well as the newer s/c like the ones found in the B8.5 or C7's. Can someone confirm or refute this?

I know that the Charge Air Coolers inside the S/C are a different revision for the Q5. Maybe more efficient. They may have also opened up some of the ports in the S/C, but overall, it is the same. You can get the CAC's for them.

On another note. I got the engines out.
The rear timing cover and oil pan spacer have to be swapped out in order to bolt this engine up to the ZF6 vs the MT.
The A6 reads the crank signal off a reluctor attached to the flywheel. The S4 uses the reluctor on the crankshaft. The crankshaft supersedes to the same part so I will just read the sensor still off the flywheel when I swap it over.

Not go off-topic here, but what is the difference between the gen 1 3.0T motor (2009 - 2017) and the gen 2 3.0T motor (2018 - present, seen in the current Q7)?

So aside from this you didn’t have any other issues? I’m about to undertake the same job. Found a C6 running cheap for the engine.

    first, great effort!

second, I have a question. Can I direct swap from my 3.2 A6 to a newer 3.0T from A6 as well? Would it be a direct swap, or would involve replacing parts/cutting, welding, atc :D

I would get gearbox as well from newer one.

g-can, it would be cheaper to sell your 3.2 a6 and buy a 3.0t a6 most likely. The amount of effort this would take seems not worth the trouble.

cheaper? I have a rare Avant top of the line S line, with loads of work done and stuff replaced, and selling it with a loss, and getting something USED again and fixing all that I fixed on this one seems ridicolous.

This way I would have a solid body well kept body with newer engine that I could service while its out, like new tensioners, gaskets, etc.

In Canada these avants are very rare, especially model like mine. Like, Ive seen NONE in this trim. I was literally looking over 2 years to grab one.

I am willing to spend 5k to get this done. I CANT sell mine and ad 5k to buy one with 3.0T, and not to mention they havent sold maybe 20 avants in canada with 3.0T.

that is true, i thought about it as i typed the reply but didn't add the asterisk, if you have a rare combo then i could see it cheaper to swap in a 3.0T, but i suspect it is more than just motor and ecu swap, as a lot of the other control modules might balk at the new ecu and tcu also. Granted i am not a vagcom wiz, so hopefully someone that is will chime in.

that is true, i thought about it as i typed the reply but didn't add the asterisk, if you have a rare combo then i could see it cheaper to swap in a 3.0T, but i suspect it is more than just motor and ecu swap, as a lot of the other control modules might balk at the new ecu and tcu also. Granted i am not a vagcom wiz, so hopefully someone that is will chime in.
thats why im looking slowly to find a donor car. SO all parts would be there.

I just found a whole A6 that has busted suspension, but with 3.2 engine that runs fine, guy would sell whole car for $500, like tranny alone even messed up is worth more :D

so, there is stuff out there, just patience.
