    turbo flutter under acceleration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hi all, weird issue. at highway speeds, under heavy load, the turbo will flutter. i don’t know if there is boost loss as well because the moment i hear it i let off the throttle. under normal acceleration I have no issue. any ideas? i’ll try to get a video

Turbo flutter itself isn’t good. It just means you have excess air that gets forced out the turbo when you close the throttle. Best way to remedy it is get a blow off valve, or have a smaller transition from load to coasting. (I speak from experience. My car does the same thing) too much turbo flutter and it can damage the turbine wheels

Ah, that’s different. That could mean there is more air coming in than your turbo can handle or some other reason I don’t understand. Are you tuned? What mods do you have to your turbo/intake?

    1. I don’t think it’s “flutter” you’re hearing, and 2. The turbine could be loose in the housing ... I would double check that.

    OR

In all honesty my car does the same thing and so I’ve just thought it was from the new intake, letting in loads of air. I assumed the turbo is accounting for the higher boost pressure and this spins faster, creating the whistle noise

93 octane. it seems like i am losing power when it happens, that being said I just drove 200 miles on the highway today without it happening once. maybe an intermittent air leak somewhere? car has only 45k miles

Agreed. Go to Rev D 'piston style' diverter valve. Easy to reach if you've got the car up on a lift, should take like 5 mins.

nope, just a loss of power which I assume ahs something to do with the turbo. no CEL, no other issues. only at highway speeds.

I just lied. looking at the logs, when under boost at around 3600rpm, cylinder knock for 1-4 is 5.25, 7.5, 5.25, 2.25

    wastegate pressure is 74
    MAF is at 109.92

That amount of knock would likely be audible, it'd sound like marbles in a tin can. IE'll sort it out with you.

So was contacted by IE- apparently my wastegate is becoming stuck shut, which is causing overboost but isnt giving me any error codes or CEL. they said "theyve never seen a stock turbo create so much boost", and said that either I have a stuck wastegate or i have an aftermarket turbo. unfortunately it was the former. not sure what to do now, but as long as I drive easy and dont slam the GO pedal, im okay. not sure what to do at this point.

Any update on this? I had my windows down the other day and noticed the same thing under acceleration. I have the same setup as beantownb8.5 - IE stage 1 and AEM covered intake. I was thinking about replacing my DV to see if that fixes it.

The flutter sounds exactly like this GTI vid:

GFB DV+. Worthy investment, easy to install. I must have had some boost leak on my stock valve cause the car pulls loads better now.
