    Placing car on jack stands

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, sorry if this has been asked before, I did try a search and couldn't find any definitive answers with images etc. My question is, if using the pinch welds to jack up on, where are you guys placing the jack stands? If possible, please include pics with your answers.

    Thanks!

I jack the car up on the plastic portion that goes over the frame rail then I put the stand on the metal pinch weld.

Same for me. Block of wood on-top of jack then jack the car up on that plastic portion that covers the frame. The jack stands I have fit the pinch weld and the shape of the frame perfectly.

There is just enough room to place my Schwaben jack stand right next to my jack. However, I just picked up one of these, to specifically address that issue, but haven't used it yet.

Depends how big the jack is. I have 2. Large has a 4 inch face on it and the small is 2 inch. I will either use the larger jack to raise and support the car at the pinch weld, then place the stand next to it under the plastic covered side of the frame just as a backup. Or if I am raising both sides I will use my smaller jack, which leaves just enough room next to it to also put a stand on the pinch weld before moving the jack to the other side to repeat.

If you look at the side of your car, where you would normally place a jack there is a small arrow shaped mark. Directly below that is the section of the frame rail that is exposed. This is the pinch weld. Standard lift point. That frame rail runs the length of your car but most of it is covered in plastic. Not my pic but this is basically what we're talking about. Arrow on top, jack below right on metal, plastic covering the rest of the rail on the left.

but then I placed the jack stands under the wheel supports.... anybody see an issue with that?

Thanks for that. I was more unsure about where to place the Jack stands once I've raised the car using the pinch welds

I've got the exact same jack as in that photo. You have to get the jack as far back as you can on the exposed pinch weld, and then put the jack stand in front of it. You can't put it behind it, since the jack lifting handle on the side is in the way. Then do the opposite on the other side of the car, and put it behind the jack, so one will be in front and one will be further back depending on side.

Np. I know it was mostly redundant but was trying to show where the plastic part on the frame rail is people were referencing. And/or how much room you’d have next to the jack to put the stand.

my technique was as follows. i always started with the stands at a low setting and repeated the process as necessary to get the height i needed
    1) place 2x4's under rear tires (either drive on, or jack up one side at a time)
    2) lift front one side at a time by placing the jack pad on the rearmost part of the front subframe (where the last 2 bolts are)
    3) place front jack stands at factory location on pinch weld
    4) lift the whole rear of the car by placing jack pad on the rear subframe (not the diff), next to where the diff mount is
    5) place rear jack stands at factor locations on pinch weld

I have a similar jack and the jack stand doesn’t fit because of the handle. Since that is the case, I unscrewed one of the the handle screws with an Allen wrench and “swiveled” it over to fit the jack stand beside it. Works perfectly fine for me at this point. I can always post a pic if needed.. I should be doing a tire rotation soon anyways.

Whenever I want to use jack stands on a unibody car, I always locate a sport in the center area of the front and rear of the car in order to lift the car from the front/rear center points. Since I have not done this on my S4, where exactly are those points located on this car?

I was jacking up the car where I cercle ⭕️ and putting the the jack stand at the edge green cercle. With time the plastic liner just ripped off exactly where is the red ⭕️. Will be great to find other lifting point.

I always put a hockey puck on top of my floor jack and lift right on the exposed metal portion of the pinch weld itself. Never had any problems. My jackstand can fit just barely next to my floor jack and support across the pinch weld

What jack pads do you all recommend? Pictures are worth a thousand words btw someone take 5 mins and show where you jack it up and place jack stands. Ty

I recently wrapped my exhaust. I put the $79-$99 grey steel harbor freight low profile jack on the innermost part of the pinch welds. That leaves enough room to put the jack stands (harbor freight 3 ton) on the outermost part of each pinch weld. 2 ton jack stands would probably even fit better as they have a smaller base. For the lift jack pads. I bought some used hokey pucs and used a grinder to cut a groove in it same size as pinch weld

some guy on here was using this http://www.purems.com/product.php?II=833

and for safety sake i put the tire on blocks and slid it under there... figure better a little damage to the car than being crushed to death if a jack fails (especially since I had them on blocks, lol)

Did you use the adapter plate that was mislabeled as 2014-2018 'S1' ?

    2) lift front one side at a time by placing the jack pad on the rearmost part of the front subframe (where the last 2 bolts are)
    3) place front jack stands at factory location on pinch weld
    4) lift the whole rear of the car by placing jack pad on the rear subframe (not the diff), next to where the diff mount is
    5) place rear jack stands at factor locations on pinch weld

Can you elaborate on where exactly these spots are, particularly step 2 and step 4?

    Thanks!

sorry i don't have pics on hand, but i'll try to use some of 034 motorsports diy guides to help

for the front lifting point, check out the pic for step 1 in the following guide. follow the curved control arm to where it meets the front subframe. the bolts i'm talking about are next to the plastic underbody panel

for the rear lifting point, look at the pic for step 2 in the following guide. you can see the rear subframe under the diff... i place the jack pad to the right of where the diff mount is on the rear subframe
