    Quiet tires

    Hey guys,

I’ve got a 2018 A6 with stock 20” summer wheels and tires that are about to go back onto the car when I swap the winter wheels and tires. That said, the PZeros are LOUD and I’d prefer to NOT use them another summer season.

Other than Michelin PS4S, which I had used for summer tires on a previous car, can anyone recommend a QUIET summer tire or HP all season for the A6???

    Current size is 255/35/20..

I am very happy with my Pilot 4S tires. Not so happy with the competitors from Pirelli and Contis

I also had continental dws06 that were quiet.

Keep in mind that “quiet” is very subjective.

It won’t take much to be quieter than those Pirelli tho.

Bridgestone S-04's are also loud, so you can nix them from the list too. I've had Michelin PSS (quietest) by far, but my wife works for Bridgestone, so I get those for 50% off. I'll put up with loud for cheap lol.

I have those Conti’s as well. They are very quiet for the most part, but man are they soft. I’ve picked up three bolts/nails in a year’s time and I kid you not. Not sure if it’s just bad luck, but I had to get two new tires because of the location of the punctures. America’s Tire road hazard warranty paid off in spades for me...

So, why are you using 245 size tires with load rating of 95 when Audi calls for 255 size with load rating of 97 or higher?

Definitely a subjective question, but I have the Continental Extreme Contact DSW06 for my summer tires and I feel they are quiet on the highway. I noticed lately at around 40 MPH they are slightly louder, but haven’t investigated to see if its anything other than tire noise… maybe wheel bearing, maybe cupping/uneven wear. I have about 31K miles on this set.
(Figured I would mention incase anyone else has similar experience)

Before this I have had the stock factory Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 255-40-19 which were as quiet, but they didn’t “stick” as well.

I have had the Goodyear snows, Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT 235-50-18 which expectedly was louder.

Surprisingly though my Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2235/50/18 weren’t nearly as loud as the Goodyear snows.

Like I said this is all subjective, as I don’t have real, measurable data to compare.

I went with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports which is the model before the MPS4S's and I am very happy with them and they are very quiet in 19 inch. Both of those tires are 1/2 on tirerack for Max performance summers so that could be a cheaper option for you.

+1 for MPSS, cheaper than MPS4 and just as good while being quiet. Although 20 inch wheels will always be a little noisy..

I have to say that the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S are the most smoothest and quietest tires I have had on the A7

I'm thinking of buying some as well. I've heard they're not quite as good as Continent DWS06 or Michelin Sport A/S but for the money they're great value and they're summer tires (vs. All-Season)

$200+ vs $150. Plus great reviews on tire rack. The fact they even compare them to Michelin and Continentals states a point for consideration.

FWIW, I see you're in New Jersey but in Canada starting April 15th, Firestone is offering a $100 CAD rebate on a set of 4 of these tires.

I almost when Michelin but got the better deal on the Bridgestones.

I'm happy with the Dunlops on my RS6 (see my sig). Switched to Michelin tires on my S6 (had very noisy P-Zeros) and the difference was huge. I'd say the Dunlops are as quiet, but perhaps not as good in the wet.

Any run flat is typically very noisy.

I have found P zeros pretty noisy.

The Pilot A/S are actually pretty good overall on noise, ride and traction.

The Pilot Sport Summer tires, all models tend to be ok on noise until they are a bit worn and then they get loud - that's just my anecdotal opinion.

Some of the Conti seem to be more on the quieter side.

The Hankook Ventus I thought were relatively quiet and based on the reviews was what I purchased for my RS7 brand new. Good price point and I was very happy with the performance, price etc.

I couldn't be happier with Michelin PS4S tires on my RS7. quiet and grippy.
Cost a little more, but the 30k mile warranty they come with could pay for the difference.

I put on Pilot A/S 3+ 2 months ago and noticed a low speed "sticky" noise right away, thought it was just glue from the labels or junk on the shop's floor, but 2 months later and still hear it. Worse when I'm driving next to a wall.

Agree on the Hankook Ventus tires, have the V12 tires on my other car and for the price to performance ratio, they are awesome.

Interesting, as of February 1st 2019, some P zeros now come with PNCS, Pirelli Noise Cancelling System. I wonder how much of a difference this will make? I really like my P zeros and if they make them quieter, even better. Below is more from the tirerack website:

Limited sizes of the Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) are available with Pirelli Noise Cancelling System (PNCS), which involves the manufacturer adhering a layer of sound-absorbing foam to the inner liner of the tire to reduce cabin noise in the vehicle. These sizes are identified on the Specs page and in the search results.

Related Information: Noise Reducing Tire Technology

My size (and the OP's size), 255/35/20 is one of the sizes that has the PNCS.

Yep, that's what I was thinking as well JWebb. I am curious though, is this a cutting edge new type of design, or have other tire manufacturers been using noise cancelling foam for years and Pirelli is just finally catching up? Regardless, it will be interesting to see what kind of reviews these new PNCS tires get over the next 3-12 months. I'm at 12,000 miles on my p zeros so I'll probably dig deeper into this at the end of the summer once I'm closer to 20k.

Definitely update this thread with a review whichever direction you end up going if you wouldn't mind.

Michelin has offered this technology for a little while now on certain tires.

Go with the PS4S - between the performance, the quiet and the willingness of Michelin to work with you towards the pricing of new tires when it's time, they're not only the best tire, but the best deal, too.

Related Information: Noise Reducing Tire Technology

My size (and the OP's size), 255/35/20 is one of the sizes that has the PNCS.
I've been running the PNCS PZeros on my RS7 since Spring of 2017 - so I Know they came out before that. I run a 275/35/20 setup - and had a set of continental DWS 06 on there prior to - and the PZeros are def quieter.

Prior to all that I had a new set of Hankook Ventus V12 OEM (21") setup and those were the loudest of the 3. I Know there are other brands now that make PNCS tires, I might try some of those next.

Yeah, I must have misread the article on tirerack. Maybe I was looking at the warranty information or something else? But to this point, I wonder why the PNCS tires wouldn't be the standard, especially for the packages that include the 20 inch rims?

Quietness is subjective but I would also recommend you try other brands of quiet Michelin tires and compare. I’ve had an excellent experience with Michelin Primacy MXM4/ V4, and Michelin Defender ltx. The Michelin Primacy features Comfort Control Technology, a computer-optimized design and precision manufacturing to reduce vibrations and thus road noise.

You say the tires are well worn, I had a set that feathered because of regularly entering on a highway on-ramp loop that was groved while under construction and caused a loud howling during normal driving. I replaced with Michelin’s and they were great. Fan of continentals as well.

DEWD, My PS4S are pretty loud. I've put almost 10k on them and they're loud. To the point where I'm constantly checking tire pressure.

as I just bought this Audi I currently own I remember on my 08 A6 I put on Kumho Ecsta for my wife. the car had 19" wheels and i'll tell you, they lasted, quiet, handled well. then they were mostly a touring tire but now they make the Ecsta in a lot of different forms. I highly recommend them and cost is less than a lot of others
