Google Maps audio not playing on Android phone

    Hi,

I recently upgraded my cellphone from a Samsung Galaxy S7 to an S10+ (Android) and I just discovered something yesterday regarding audio from Google Maps (and maybe Waze too, although I have not tested it yet). With my phone connected to the MMI system over bluetooth and I launched Google Maps for directions on how to get somewhere, I would not hear the audio/turn by turn directions at all. Not through the phone, not over the MMI.....nothing! The moving map works fine, which resulted in me having to hold the phone and follow the map. I thought it was because my S7 was old(er), but I am getting the same behavior on this new S10+. Audio in the maps app is not muted and when I raise the volume on the phone, the media/MMI slider bar appears in red, almost as if it's telling me there's a problem. This raised a (red) flag for me. I started poking around in Google Maps settings, tapped on Navigation Settings and in there is a switch called Play Voice Over Bluetooth. I found that if I set that switch to off, then I am able to hear the turn by turn directions through the phone. I never really wanted to hear the directions through the MMI system, I just wanted to hear them from the phone. If I drill down into the MMI bluetooth settings though, both Handsfree and Audio are turned on. So my two questions are, should the phone bluetooth connection to the MMI play the turn by turn directions over the car speakers? If so, why isn't it?

    Thank you.

They should. Handsfree bluetooth profile is "Hands-Free Profile (HFP)". Typically the default (when you un-check play voice over bluetooth) is that the voice reverts to the "Advanced Audio Distribution Profile" (A2DP).

Seems like something is weird and google is not playing or receiving audio via the A2DP profile. Does other bluetooth audio streaming currently work properly? I.e. does a song from spotify stream over your audio bluetooth connection in the MMI?

    Hi PNW Avant,

I don't have Spotify on my phone. Is there another way I can test? Maybe play an audio/.mp3 file that came with the phone and see if it plays over bluetooth to the MMI? Or download a song and see if it'll play? With incoming and outgoing phone calls, audio plays fine over bluetooth to the MMI system.

Update regarding Waze - I experience the same problem NOT hearing turn by turn directions over the MMI system. In order for me to hear them through the phone ultimately, I need to go into Waze Voice & Sound settings and turn on the switch next to 'Play sound to phone speaker.'

    Thank you.

Yes try any song streaming from any source. You just need to see if the A2DP profile is working appropriately.

Samsung Galaxy S7 , I don't think this is working on my Allroad (2013) either.

    Hi again,

I ran a few errands yesterday and finally got around to testing out your recommendation by playing an mp3 song file that came preloaded as part of the Pie Android software. Unfortunately, I was not able to hear it over the MMI system. I determined the phone is fine because an hour earlier, I used my daughters 2015 Toyota Camry on one of the errands and I was able to hear the turn-by-turn directions working over whatever the equivalent is to the MMI system in that car. When I tried it again in my 2014 S4 on the next errand, I was not able to hear the instructions again. I'm thinking that the MMI needs an update maybe? My MMI is on the original software version. There's a thread in the B8 S4 forum on new MMI software but I'm not able to determine if anyone had/has the same issue and whether an update fixes it.

I generally don't like to give up on things very easily so there a few other tweaks I'm going to try before I feel like I've exhausted every option.

    Thank you.

You need to know what bluetooth profile the Camry is using. The camry could be using "handsfree" profile which we already confirmed worked with your audi. We are speculating your A2DP profile is not working correctly.

Here's a dumb question - is bluetooth audio streaming turned on as a source in the MMI? This is different than connecting via bluetooth for handsfree phone calls.

I spent some time yesterday researching the Camry system both online and in the car and the most I could find out is that it uses the base version of something called Entune. I could not ascertain whether it uses Handsfree or A2DP. I also spent a lot if time in the Audi and pretty much wore out the buttons and knob on the MMI as well as my phone, ensuring that everything related to connections and apps are enabled for bluetooth, but still could not get it to work

OK, full disclosure on this. I did not read the manual until today, and now that I did, I got it working. I am able to stream local music by playing song file and also able to hear the turn-by-turn directions, but oddly enough, only from Waze and not Google Maps, but I'll keep digging on that. Not sure I understand why I have to set the source to the actual phone vs. it just working as a result of pairing it to the MMI, but I think that was the answer.

Anyway, I'm satisfied at this point so thank you PNW Avant for helping me find the solution.

I hope this helps Adams-Allroad also.

    /thread.

when you said you read the manual and you got it working, is this the phone manual or the MMI manual? Its hard to tell what you did to get it working. might be worth sharing the details for others.

I found what I needed in the MMI manual under Playing Media. I selected the Media button, then the source control button, then chose my phone. Once source was set to my phone, I was able to hear music from it as well as the directions from Waze, but I think you need to ensure that Waze/sound settings/Play sound to phone speaker is set to off, so it'll play over the MMI to the car speakers.
