    Front Speaker Upgrade

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Driver side door speaker was crackling. Decided to replace the front woofer and dash tweeters.

I don’t have bose, so I took one speaker out, confirmed its 4ohm and did some measuring before ordering new stuff.

2 screws and some clips gets the panel off.

Added deadening on top of the oe stuff, back of the panel fillers, and inner frame (not pictured). It seems to make a small difference in Road noise.

    OE speaker

    Cut out the back supports

Made some adapters to fit the new 6.75” speaker. Only painted because they smelled from being laser cut. I epoxied the rings to the housing.

    Soldering and mounting.

Onto the tweeters. They come out easy too. Gotta break off the protector because they sit too high with the new tweeters.

Solder and mounting. 1” tweeters snap right into the OE housing. Added a few spots of super glue just in case. That’s how the OE ones were.

They won’t snap in because they sit higher, but they felt secure enough and don’t rattle. Haven’t came out yet.

Wiring diagrams to find +/- leads.

Overall upgrade, they sound much better. Road noise is a little better, notice less wind on the highway. Only problem is that now I want to do the backs, which looks like more of a pain.

The rear looks like a pain, so I installed a sub over the weekend. Probably something for another thread.

Thank you a thousand times for this. One of my door speakers is shot, and decided to upgrade, I have the same non-bose system. Is the difference with the woofer & tweeter significant? More bass? Thinking of ordering the same speakers.

I have the roadster, and the speakers behind my seat are pretty worthless, going to upgrade these as well. I'm trying to avoid a sub, if possible. I'm reading all your Audio posts now.

    Thanks again.

The quality is noticeably better, but it’s still limited by the factory amp. Sub is the way to go for bass.

My right speaker wasn't shot, something else is going on, it has reduced power. Fault code pops up, "00871 Bass Speaker Front Right (R23) Closed.

I checked the wires, took the amp apart and cleaned, and played around with fuses, can't find a solution. Think I'll just replace the amp.

The speaker could be on its way out. That’s what happened with mine. It was intermittently fuzzy/low power and then it died. The root cause was bad connection with one or both of the leads attached to the driver. The ECU sees this as an out of spec resistance and throws that fault code.

Well, I just purchased 4 replacement Pioneer 3 way's (for each door and behind seats), 2 channel amp, and a Kicker Hideaway Powered Sub.

Figured I'd leave the fronts connected to factory amp (for now), and the 2ch. amp is for speakers behind the seats.
The speakers behind the seats, were terrible, literally couldn't hear them. Can't wait to hear the change.

I copied your idea, of reusing the brackets, I cut out the old speakers. Thanks for this.
