Iroz Motorsport IMS 850 v2 with built motor

Hello all, I’ve lurked on the forum awhile mainly educating myself on the RS3 and its tuning potential. I’ve been daily driving my built RS3 for over two months now and felt it was time to share my experience. I’ve had many modified rides in the past: several camaros, corvettes, evo, mustang, a couple hellcats, and a 2017 Golf R with APR stage 2 tuning, that I traded in on the RS3.

I’ve educated myself on the RS3 here, other forums, and found the Malaka you tube videos to be very informative as well. When I picked up the 2018 Nardo RS3 I was in the process of moving from Georgia to Las Vegas, so I decided to stop by Iroz Motorsports and check it out. I had decided that I a stage 2 setup would be plenty fast considering the cost, and I conveyed to the Iroz staff that I also wanted suspension work, because I felt the stock RS3 was lacking compared to my Golf R.

I was very impressed with the Iroz staff, in comparison to automotive shops I’ve dealt with in the past. They didn’t try to sell me anything; They listened to what I wanted, answered my questions, and made suggestions. I asked to go for a ride in a stage 2 RS3 with suspension mods, and Hank happily obliged. It was exactly what I thought I wanted. We returned to the shop and I scheduled an appointment to have the stage 2 and suspension parts installed. While we talked, I mentioned that I had seen the “big turbo” Malaka video and asked if I could take a ride in Hank’s car. Once again, Hank was more than happy to help. I later realized that it was at this moment…I f*cked up. Had I never rode in the big turbo car, I’m reasonable sure that I could have lived a happy, ignorant, blissful life with my RS3; however, you can’t un-ring a bell. There was NO comparison between the stage 2 and the big turbo. After that ride I spent the better part of the next hour talking with Hank about going big turbo instead. The sane side of me wanted to stay with the stage 2 and then upgrade later, but I really didn’t want to spend money twice. After having all my questions answered, I decided to pull the trigger on the big turbo. I made the arrangements with Iroz and paid the deposit. I went home and started more in depth research on what was available for the RS3. I told Hank that I was planning to daily drive the car, and I wasn’t interested in gutting it to save weight or set records. I have nothing but praise for Hank, Josh, Nick, Jeff, Jesus, Jared, and the rest of the Iroz staff, for their patience and help with my build. Before it was finished, I returned to Hank several times to make changes. What started as a “simple” big turbo install ended up as:

    - IMS 850 v2 turbo kit, down pipe, midpipes, intercooler, dsg catch can, engine catch can, IE intake
    - Built head (ported, springs, valves, retainers)
    - Fully built bottom end
    - IMS upgraded clutches, wavetrac diff, MSS track suspension, 034 sway bars and other suspension parts
    - Custom Code ECU/TCU tuned for E85, with EBC
    - TSW 18x9.5 Interlagos wheels wearing Bridgestone RE71R’s 255/35 in a square setup
    - Custom built 3.5” exhaust

Honestly, I was a bit intimidated when I picked the car up; I didn’t know what to expect from a 900+hp daily driver. The best description that I can give is Jekyll and Hyde. This car is literally whatever you want it to be. When I get up in the morning and drive to the gym, I leave it in “D” since I don’t plan on beating on a cold turbo for a short trip. I average 23-25mpg driving “normal” around town. Unless you put your foot into it, you would never know what’s under the hood. Spirited driving will net you around 14-16mpg. The car has NEVER surprised me. However, when you put it in sport or manual mode and want to play, NOTHING can wipe the smile from your face. As long as you’re in the powerband (around 3,700rpm and up) results are immediate. I have had fun in “Mexico” against many worthy adversaries, and so far nothing has even come close. It’s nice being the apex predator on the street. My only gripe is a drone in the exhaust around 3k rpm, but it is a custom built exhaust and I knew that going in; anyway I just turn the music up on the rare occasion that it bothers me.

Having daily driven the car for a few thousand miles over the past two months, I have had zero problems. I haven’t had to add any oil. I’ve only checked air pressure and added fuel. I’ve also updated the ECU and TCU tunes from Custom Code, and they keep getting better. I can honestly say that I’m happier with this car than any of my previous rides. If, God forbid, something happened to it I would get another RS3 and build a duplicate. If you’re thinking about going big turbo and your resources allow it, just do it. You won’t regret it. I haven’t tracked the car, and I really don’t plan to. It truly is a daily driver* Again, I have nothing but respect for Hank and the crew at Iroz. They have a passion for their work and it shows. Disclaimer: I paid full price for everything. I have received no compensation from anyone, however, I did get the first IMS 850 v2 turbo after Hank called and asked if I minded being a guinea pig. Hank told me he wanted numbers from the new turbo, and said that it should spool faster and make more power than the previous version. That’s all that I had to hear, especially living just across town from his shop in case there were any problems.

Thanks to everyone for reading my novel. Thanks to Iroz Motorsports for building a reliable beast. Thanks to Malaka motorsports for their informative videos and taking their time to answer my questions. I’ll try to answer questions, but I also work 60+ hours a week so it might take a while. I don’t know how to post pics here, but my car is on Iroz’s Instagram page around the end of January. Later.

Thanks for the write up. Must be awesome. Someday I’ll go for a spin in a big turbo or hybrid RS3.

This thread is not making deciding between the RS3 and the TTRS easy. I know, I know same motor... but they both are so nice.

BTW was it you I met at IROZ while dropping the car? Maybe two months ago.... I was with Hank discussing my white RS3 that was on the rack at the time.

Interesting review. A built like that with all the bells and whistles and labor and tax has to be well over $20,000..lol, is got to be nice having $20000 laying around to make a nice fast car from factory a total radical monster. it looks like the IMS850 is like the ultimate street car with little sacrifice in drivability. Living near IROZ shop must be a plus.

On a different note, what did you not like about the RS3 compared to the Golf R? the car magazines favor the handling on the RS3 with a solid .98 G lateral acceleration on the skidpad. So, what is the new IMS850 V2 improvements consist off? even lighter compressor wheel?or perhaps the design of the blades is different? Congrats on your car!

I'm curious what the life is going to be on a fully built combo (engine/trans-clutches) like this that is a DD and gets exercised on the street regularly and what the refresh interval is going to be. Will it last 30K, 60K miles or more?

Has anyone done daily driving with crappy 91 gas instead of E85? For long distance trip, I would have to use 91 over E85 and trying to gauge if tuning for 91 is well refined like E85 tunes are for big turbo.

Thanks, don't have 20K just laying around though, I work a lot...but with all the previous cars I've had, I've always sacrificed in some way or another. As far as the handling, the RS3 didn't feel as good stock as my modded Golf R did. Stock, the RS3 felt a little happy in the tail end when braking from higher speeds, and also felt a little floaty during higher speed lane changes. Now however, the RS3 is great and it doesn't have a harsh ride like the modded suspension on the Golf R.

How do you feel driving that around in California? I live in San Diego and I worry about putting too much into the car then having to strip down for SMOG later on.

Great build though. No hate. Just asking.

What impresses me with the RS3 and your build is how easy it is for this to be a daily driver. Modern technology has come a long way ... wow. That must surprise a few of the tourists in Mexico :)

It is sad how my 7R felt more stable at higher speeds, my god how bad my rear and suspension handle at speed, lane changing and braking. Was disgusting yesterday going over a long bridge at speed, it was wanting to go everywhere but stay strong str8....

I have the RS Fixed Suspension and it seems to be pretty good at speed, lane changes and braking ... I put 18" rims and tires on it and it still seems to get on good. Not sure if you have the Magnetic Ride?

Magnetic ride and everything is stock, suspension wise.
I don't get it, but will put on the oem wheels soon, and see if anything changes.

I don't have the Magnetic ride so I can't comment first hand but I have heard comments from a few Mag ride owners that the car can be a bit floaty? Not sure if that is causing the issue?

I had issues after lowering my car and before getting the mag ride recalibrated. But otherwise in dynamic the car is great. A bit more floaty in comfort, but that is to be expected.

Hey thanks for the review. I wanted to bump this thread and see if you would not mind sharing how much a build like this cost you? I have seen Hank say in other videos it can be between 20-30k for a similar build, and wanted to see if that is still about right or too low or too high? I am planning on doing a similar buil in my 2018 TT RS and am building out my project plan for all the parts and upgrades I will be adding. Thanks and great build man!

Yeah, I do not really have a budget for this build. I have had the car for 7 days, but have about 20-30k earmarked to start. I have a 6-page word doc with all of my plans, parts, and suppliers for the build-out. I was just wondering or hoping someone would be open to sharing more specific or exact figures they spent for similar things I anticipate having done on my car. Thanks!

Later.
If your 3.5" exhaust splits to dual 3", you could fit two Corsa universal 3" straight through mufflers on there. It will eliminate all the drone. I've done this on several cars now and they are a miracle. They dont restrict anything at all.

Mind giving a general price range for the build?

He hasn't posted for a while. A build like this can easily start in the 30-40K range.

This is true at the present time. I would leave the car alone. They’re going up in value and by 2026 some think they’ll be worth over 100k. If you want to basterdize your Audi rs3 that is your choice. Better off putting it in the garage and buying a Plaid for less than 90k now ;) a car this modded (I made this mistake) is a headache to maintain unless you want to put in the overtime. not to mention not that consistent. Times will vary greatly depending on how you’re running and ambient conditions. I remember all this years ago was about 15k less then now. But like everything else, it’s expensive now lol!
I always leave the money factor out of a car vs another car out of a race. A race is about winning, not excuses afterwards as to why you lose or what makes your car superior to others because it costs $$$ I always heard kids say this than years later they buy something like an RS3 lol! I rarely see one on the road and that’s a good thing. Even a whole year. Value goes up! What? California has a smog law? Could have fooled me especially lately lol!

At the present time doing a build like this is going to cost you even more if you want to do it right. I’m close to $60k in and I don’t even have a standalone ECU. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion but concerning the plaid comment, I would bury one in just about any race. Regardless, I will never drive a Tesla; they’re lame af.

I live in SoCal so there’s not really a whole lot of difference between the worst and best conditions for me and this isn’t a car I put a lot of miles on (og owner 2019 TTRS with 18k miles) so maintenance is not really even a factor. I’ll put in spark plugs more often and every 25k miles or so I’ll probably refresh the bottom end of my motor, but based on my current cadence, that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

With the dawn of strictly electric car sales on the horizon I see no point in giving this car up so value is of no importance. I’m not sure anybody is looking at this as an investment but I could be wrong. If so there are a lot better strategies to making money.

A daily driven RS3 isn’t going to make anybody any money, the appreciation will at best soften the blow when the car is sold.

California doesn’t require emissions testing for 7 years after the car is purchased when new. So as long as you don’t get a state inspection ref by a cop you’re good until then. At that point there are other ways around it like registering the car under an llc in Montana and then you don’t pay the crazy annual fees, sales tax, and you don’t need to get emissions done.
