Q5 engine shut off/start at traffic stops

Greetings Q5 friends,

I'm reaching out trying to get an answer for a friend of mine that has a B9 Q5. The engine shuts off and turns back on at traffic stops, which apparently you can disable, but as soon as they turn the car off and back on the setting isn't saved. Is there a way to permanently disable that engine shut off/on? I appreciate any tips/help as I don't own a Q5 myself so I'm a bit unfamiliar.

There may be a way to do it in VCDS, but nothing openly available. Sport mode disables it.

I figured VCDS might be the only way to permanently fix it. Do you know for certain that it's possible? what are the odds my friend could get a local dealership to make that coding change for him? (I can't help him out myself as I'm about 2500 miles away)

This coding with ODBEleven will disable the Auto Start-Stop as long as the Climate Control system is on.

Auto Start-Stop feature - disable
Air Conditioning (08) > Adaptation > A/C comfort parameter for start-stop function > (default) 5 > change to new value (0 = disable start/stop)

This tells the system that there is constant demand and so it won't turn the engine off.

With the B8 Q5's there is a physical button on the dash you press to turn it off. Once pressed, it does not "reset" even after each time you turn on/off the car til you press the button again to enable it.

Most of the new cars have it enabled by default each time you start the car, this allows them to take credit for mileage or emissions from the EPA. VCDS as stated can be used to turn it off, but it is not the same as previous models where it could be disabled once with a button and maintained that way.

Man that would drive me insane, when I had my loaner B9 A4 I experienced it. Definitely felt like the car was gonna die every time I came to a stop.

Disabled mine with OBDeleven. For all intents and purposes it's disabled.

Thanks for the ODBEleven tip. Looks like that's the only/best solution (other than driving in Sport mode all the time).

I am glad that the SQ5 didn't even have that as an option, I would also probably disable it by default.

The button disables it only until you shut off the car. It defaults to on when the car is started.

The adaptation tricks the auto start-stop system into thinking the A/C is in high duty cycle and prevents it from functioning, at least as long as the A/C control unit is turned on.

OBD Eleven will do the trick. You can download the app before purchasing load look up your car and look in the garage for the pre configured adaptations to verify it is there first. You can even invert the light so when it's off there is no Amber light.
