    Best Tire!?

ALRIGHT boys, my issue with power loss is a traction issue. i will be getting new tires in the coming weeks. what is everyone's opinion on best tire? i am leaning towards potenza RE-71R or michelin pilot sport 4s. can anyone tell me if you have ran either of these or even throw out some more ideas. thanks again, this forum has been awesome!

Michelin are consistently good as are RE-71R, but you'll eat right through those sticky tires on the street which will cost alot both up front and shorter life. I plan to get the RE-71R this year for my Lexus track car and even though not real race tires, I don't expect to get more than one weekend race out of them. For street driving the really sticky ones are false economy IMO. Get some race tires for the track and reasonable street tires for the street? - Hoosiers are great on track. You could always air down a bit for more grip and could go a bit wider. I'm running Firestone Indy 500's (255 square up on 8.5" wide wheels) and they have been a great balance between noise, wear, comfort and performance and had minimal slip on the drag strip even at normal pressures (almost got into the 11's). I plan to get General G-Max next time as the latest version of those are rated above the Indy's now, quite a bit cheaper and a currently a rebate too (split size 265 up front and 245 in the back for me on 9" wide wheels)

Even if I’m not beating on the car the 71Rs won’t hold up that great? What do you mean by false economy tires?

I’ve been using Michelin Pilot Super Sports for years (6 or 7 sets on different vehicles) and never had a problem other than winter weather. I usually get around 20k miles on mine, and I’m not easy on tires. You can get your next set prorated for the 10k left on the 30k tread life warranty as long as you aren’t using staggered width and you rotate them. I wanted to try the 4s this time, but I’m weird and do all my business at the dealer, and the 4s wasn’t on their list of “approved” tires. I’m sure someone will chime in and tell you they’re good too.

Check out the Yokohama Advan Neova AD08r...IMO the best tire you can have for daily driving with track performance.

71R are great, but just won't last long. Tires are expensive. Is a little extra grip worth it if they cost 2x something else over 20k miles (initial cost + wear rate)? I ran sticky tires when I was younger. Sandblasts the bodywork, are terrible when it gets cold out and the car will slide a little on harder tires which is a far more entertaining drive...

    OP,
As you are probably learning on here, there is no such thing as the "Best Tire". What you end up with is the best compromise while trying to meet your objectives :)
I like the Dunlop Star Specs for aggressive driving and a decent compromise street/track tire. The ZII is supposed to be even better, but I haven't driven on them yet.
Depending on how aggressively you drive and how rough your pavement is, those tires can last anywhere from 1,000 to 20,000 miles.

What Spinnetti says about sticky summer tires is all true as well... don't drive on summer tires below 50 degrees or so AND make sure you replace them within about 5 years of the manufacturers date regardless of mileage.
I used to have a ton of fun with Sumitomo HTR ZIII's and GTRadial UHP1's :)

Spinetti, post a review on those General tires when you get them.

+1 for the review. General tires have always seemed like a cheap option that I’ve never given much thought but doing a little more research on them, they seem like a good tire. Always been a Conti guy myself and haven’t given much thought to anything else...if it ain’t broke...

Will do.. I run the StarSpec ZII now on my Lexus and they have been a great tire, but I only get a maximum of about 30hrs total run time out of a set. Thinking to switch to the RE71's and see how they do, but feedback seems to be that they won't last as long as the Dunlops.

For those that don't know, the stickier the tire, the shorter the shelf life. Actual competition tires are not rated by miles but by heat cycles, with one heat cycle being run to temp then cooling down. Typically you want to heat cycle once before you run on them, then you've only got a handful of heat cycles before they go off - usually long before the tread wears out. The top "R comps" really aren't any good more than one season regardless of tread (at least for racing). The Star Specs aren't really race tires, but closer than your average street tire. I did a track day on them after not running them for a couple years and they were undriveable.

i dont plan on doing any track days with the car. i just dont want the tires breaking loose causing the rpms to jump past limiter and the ecu in turn shuts off power. since its only going to be a summer tire i would be happy with 15k-20k miles out of them. think the re71s would make it that far? if not it seems like the pilot sport 4s might be the better option here.

What’s the average temp there? Aggressive low treadwear summer tire will get really hard during the cold. My Federal 595RS-RR will spin 2nd punching it from a roll in 30 degree weather, but hook first/LC 60+ degrees.

ill be swapping tires once the weather gets colder. once spring hits chicago is probably in the 60's or higher for about 5-6 months? treadwear rating for the re71 is 200 whereas pilot sport 4s is 300. i would think i can get 3 solid years out of the re71s?

    rbish56,

In general the grippier tires also have a faster drop-off in grip once you exceed their "sweet spot". If you don't have track experience and haven't really pushed your car to the limits in a controlled environment, I would recommend the Michelins.

That being said, if you are only using the tires in the summer and only driving 5-6k miles/year I think you will get your 3 years out of the RE71R.

I walked away from the computer and was thinking about your intended use... if you are just concerned with having the best possible grip to launch the car (not canyon carving) get the RE71R's.
Also, try running your tires at a little lower pressure than the door panel suggests. I haven't drag raced in over 20 years, so someone here can probably chime in about dialing in tire pressures for drag racing.

yes, i want the grip for launching and also gunning it from 2nd and 3rd gear so the tires dont break loose causing the ecu to cut power. i will never do any canyon runs.

I second all that.... lower pressure even with your existing tires might be enough... I've never had the power cut.

Only does it if you spin so much that the engine over revs.

How many miles is everyone getting out of their PS4S? My car came with these tires and I was hoping to get at least 20k out of them. I mainly highway commute.

i would think that you get at least 20k out of them. they have a 30k mile warranty on them. how do you like them so far?

They’re awesome. They came with my car. I like them enough to buy them again assuming they last long enough for a year round tire (Florida)
