What tune are you using and why?

Well, I left the B7 S4 world (selling her ) and I've moved over to the 2014 3.0T C7 A7 side. Garnet Red w/30k on her, tan interior, nice car. My plans are: Stage 2, dual Pulley and poss a AWE Touring exhaust, I don't want it too loud, just a little more than stock. I know there are MANY tunes out there: APR, GIAC, UNITRONIC, IIE, etc. I just wanted to see who was using what, and why they chose that tune and what they think of it.IMG_6923.jpg

I am, admittedly, a newb and a non-gearhead. All I can say is, whether break-in-related, or sheer coincidence, the day I went APR Stage 2, I found the tune underwhelming. As I drove it up and down Hwy 520 on the daily for a year, I began to notice how smoother the power fed in; there was little effort as I jumped from 40 to 80 mph. There’s no TCU tune for my ZF8, but I would swear that the ECU tune somehow smoothed out the gearing.

My only experience with the DSG tranny was in a Jetta TDI, but the lower gears always struggled to find their footing. Between the ZF8 and the ECU tune, I LOVE my driving experience. Although my lizard brain wanders to look at S/RS7, I honestly couldn’t be happier with what I got.

I have an a6 3.0, so far I have gone with the APR stage 1 tune and really like it. I think I will probably go with the stage 2 1 pulley in the near future. Supposedly, the 2 pulley gives a bit more torque but also starts pushing the cooling needs towards getting an aftermarket cooler. According to the installer, if you have any thoughts at all to go stage 3, get both pulleys done at once and you will save a few hundred bucks when you go stage 3.

I went APR because after reading all the reviews here, I didn't see much negative about them, while a couple of the other tuning companies had some negative stuff. Talked with the installer and he knew what he was talking about and wasn't pushy, so I went with him and APR.

The installer recommended go stage 1, enjoy it, then decide on stage 2. He did say, 70-80% of his stage 1 installs end up going stage 2, and 50% of his stage 2 1 pulley installs end up going 2 pulleys. Stage 3 starts costing a lot for small gains I guess.

I guess I should add, I called up APR directly to find out more about the different tunes and they were great to talk to.

I did not add any exhaust stuff.

I bought my 2013 A7 in December of last year, and got the APR stage 2 single pulley tune done within two weeks of picking up the car. Before the A7, I had zero knowledge of any tuning shops. The one I chose had a good reputation, seemed highly capable, and talking with the owner (who actually did the install) gave me the confidence to use and recommend them.

The improvement above stock is definitely noticeable. I decided not to go dual pulley at this time because of the incremental cost for the pulley install and the cooling upgrade. Prefer to do other upgrades, i.e. sway bars, ceramic coating, etc. before that. I do not plan on an exhaust, want to keep the sleeper / stealth mode as much as possible.

Factory tune for me. Car has 160,000 miles on it and I just don't want to spend the money and the potential for damaging the engine with the increased power.

Plus its a daily driver / commuter and it is more than adequate for my drive on the Chicago highway system. I am gonna put the K&N filter in it and maybe an intake tube to see if I can bump up the fuel economy but otherwise I am perfect happy with the car as it sits.

I’d go with these guys. They have the only ZF8 tune that I know of. Customer support is amazing and they consistently update their tunes.

Their only con they have is on paper other Ecu tunes claim to have slightly more power gains.

I went with EPL for a few reasons. One of the major ones was the ability to flash from home. I also had great reliability with an EPL tune on my stage 3 c5 a6... She has 178k miles on her and still runs strong and reliably. I trust that my dual pulley EPL 3.0t tune will keep my cats in decent shape, where other tuners say you need test pipes. Also the recent TCU tune greatly improved shift feel and increased the redline to 7000rpm(still need 2 shifts to 60, so EPL doesn't post the quickest 0-60mph times).

With that all said, if you're looking for the quickest tune, APR still has the quickest c7 3.0t with P3U's car. He's posted high 10 sec 1/4 miles from dragy.

Well also we had the fastest A6/A7 time for almost 2 years before the TCU tunes came out.

went with APR....money wasnt the issue so much as a good track record and honestly i like the ease of use....switching between tunes is a sinch...where using the stalk or the app/dongle combo, i couldnt be happier....well not until Stage 3 comes...and then APR is able to work with me on this as well...Haven't tried EPL, but it seems like a cost effective option that most users are happy with in terms of it's flashing flexibility.

Just clarifying here...the TCU tune puts you into 3rd gear to get to 60MPH?

Correct, it shifts to third near the end of the 60mph run. Here's a dragy run on winter tires, you can see the loss of acceleration during the shift near 55mph.

No, I am single pulley. As Moose alluded to below, I did not want to bite off dual pulley + cooler. That may be in the cards for future me, but as I live in a city (Seattle) with few roads optimal for opening it up, I’m more than happy for now.

No exhaust/DP - prefer the quiet, stealth speed!

We thought is was important to finish internal testing of higher rev'ing files before releasing This was totally uncharted waters as we are still the ONLY tuner in the US to have a full solution, aka flash from home, complete ZF TCU tune.

Look for higher rev'ing files shortly.

That's awesome news Chris! I'm not a street racer, so 0-60mph times don't really matter to me as much a good running car do, but other people like to compare and it's not apples to apples when there's an extra shift in the 0-60mph run.

It sounds like getting the TCU is almost a must. Also going stage 2 , single pulley is the way to go-( at least start off with); which keeps I
From buying a new intercooler , HF DP, and fuel pump. I’m going to swing by AWE ( 20 mins from my house ) and check out their Touring Exhaust. Hopefully I can make up my mind soon.

On my a6 3.0t i have Unitronic stage 2+ dual pulley with eurocode test pipes, ctsxyonakaHFC downpipes, universal x pipe to magnaflow catback. It WHOMPS loud af and is 10000x more responsive than the old exhaust. I'm putting in a few performance parts this weekend to test another 0-60. And before with a full car, and only the tune/pulley and cat back I ran a 4.17. I love flashing at home when I'm working on the car. And their customer service is great. If I was to try another brand I'd go I.E. because they are quickly coming out with new products for this dying model and also EPL. Can't wait to pair it with Hptuners!

Not sure, been through a few developers. No nothing TDI and I doubt we will. Hell I have a mk7 TDI now, but not looking it to tune it until after the Dieselgate warranty is up.
