Windshield replacement needs recalibration of my ACC radar sensors?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone in the group had to have their windshield replaced?

I was at the Audi dealer this weekend with my brother buying his new A7. I was talking to the salesperson about my S6. Told him I need to bring it in to have my ACC recalibrated. Just asking him what all is involved and if my Insurance windshield coverage would cover it.

He told me they just had a customer in that had to have a windshield replaced. He had the same setup as me, heads up display, ACC, lane assist and everything else that’s up there.

The customer had to have his ACC recalibrated as well with the windshield change as they’re all tied together. That’s the first I’ve heard of that.

Hoping someone can share their experience if they’ve had this done?

The front camera is the only ACC component that is part of the windshield. Seems if you mounted new windshield exactly aligned with Camera , no calibration should be needed.

The front ACC globes in the bumper are a whole other mess but your not touching those. Calibration takes about 5 hours and avg price is $700.

I don’t think you need it and if so, insurance should cover it as part of the labor cost to replace windshield.

Afaik there is nothing ACC related mounted on the windshield. It is just the lane change/high beam/roadsign camera etc and since that has a fixed mount it doesn't require a recalibration....AFAIK.
Just make sure you get an OEM windshield (or your lane change might not work as good anymore, think the previous owner replaced it with cheap alternative here) and they don't screw the heat element on the camera. Again, as far as i remember you don't need ACC recalibration (what's up with dealers...).

Had the windshield replaced in April of 2018. Had to go through the whole calibration dealie. Thankfully the previous owner (dealership) covered the cost b/c the "repair" to the chip was unsatisfactory to the State of Maryland. They charged $499 for the calibration. Additionally, I was recalibrated after some pothole damage in December but that was taken care of by insurance.

Windshield replacement -> ACC calibration. ACC calibration =/= windshield replacement.

Insurance should cover it if you/they have a glass deductible.

Where did you get the "avg price is $700"? I know my dealer charges $500 for it (or $1100 if you're an insurance company). OP, check the service specials part of your dealership too--sometimes they may have an additional deal

I had the windshield replaced on my 2012 A7. Had the ACC recalibrated. The camera behind the windshield is enough of the system that ACC will not function properly without it. Earlier last year, I replaced the video cable from the camera to the image processing module to bring ACC back.

*takes popcorn and waiting it out till more feedback rolls in (but almost sure as long it is a 'replacement' = no new camera etc no calibration is needed). From what i read the windshield already comes with the camera mount mounted so it is a snap on thingy. Compaired to ACC dones, that need micro milimeter adjustments, the windshield camera is more wide angle and no 'laser' detection....
*in worst case i eat my popcorn bag if i'm wrong :p

This is all true. I just had my windshield replaced last month and the $399 re-calibration was also covered by insurance. My S6 doesn’t have HUD or night-vision, so your expense might be greater.

Purchased a CPO A6 about a year ago, noticed the lane-keeping assist pushed the car too far to the right. Dealer found that the windshield had been replaced with non-OEM glass causing the cam/sensor to be out of spec. They mentioned that only OEM glass has the clarity needed for the cam/sensor. Luckily they replaced with new glass and did the recalibration for free. Took 3-weeks to get the glass from Germany, and would have cost $1,400 just for the glass.

Seems high and long. My glass was delivered to the dealership within 3 days and installed a day later. Dealership quoted me less for the glass and installation (which they farm out) than $1400, and then the $499 alignment & calibration. Glad it was free to you though!

Dealer in Northern Virginia charged me $700 last year - guess that’s isn’t average. Just had it performed again as left ACC globe went out last week (those little things are $2k a piece). Had to get globe replaced and recalibrated but was covered under warranty. It’s 5 hours of labor.

My insurance paid for authentic glass due to the HUD and acoustic nature. It was roughly $1,200 + $300 installation + $500 for recalibration, total ~ $2,000. Thankful for only a $100 deductible...

Sounds about right, and happy to hear your deductible was only $100. Believe it or not, FL law requires insurance companies to replace windshields at no cost to the owner ($0 deductible).

Did the same on my S7 with OEM Glass. Cost was ~$1700 out the door... negotiate guys. Everything’s negotiable if you have the threat of substitution.

I had mine replaced at the dealer as well. I have all the options (HUD, ACC, Lane keep/assist). No calibrations were required. The glass was $1130. Insurance (NJ) covered most minus deductible.

Wow! Sorry guys. Just had the windshield replaced with factory glass. Got the glass around $800 and $150 to have a mobile shop come install it. Then $315 for the calibration. I always negotiate with my dealership. Never take their “stock” price.

It has to be calibrated. The attachment points may already be located on the glass but that doesn’t mean the calibration on the camera will be the same. The ACC uses a combination of the radar and visual from the camera to determine distance. In a system that is designed to keep you away from the car in front of you a small misalignment can make a big difference.

Yes it did. It did throw a code about camera not in normal run mode but a second calibration seems to have fixed it.

Well that might explain the price/labor difference between above vs calibration with two front ACC globes.
