    RS5 B9 B&O Rear Speaker/Sub Rattling

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was hoping for someone collective guidance

My bass, subwoofer dials are set to 3/4 and my treble almost max

There are rattle coming from the rear left (drivers perspective) on various bass elevations.

When I inspected and sat in the backseat and pit a bit of pressure on the speaker covers it didn't occur

Audi have looked at it and replaced the speaker and re configured it, however it is still apparent

I have seen mentions of remedies with tape and securing the parcel shelf posted before, have anyone tried it or can point me to it that would be appreciated

I seen a few complaints about this on the forums. Check other posts, I think fix was shared.

    Thanks

I’m dealing with this right now too. It’s the drivers side cover (where the sub is). Forward left corner of the grill literally bounces up and down on the rear deck. I had the dealer look at and they put some felt tape under the grill which helped but didn’t stop the problem. I even showed them an A4 B9 TSB that addresses the issue and asked them to perform it on my car. They gave me “that’s for an A4 not an A5” repsponse and used their felt tape on it. I also had them look at the passenger door speaker because it was making errant noises too. They wound up replacing the speaker in its entirety.

It’s been about 3 weeks since they did their work but the sub still rattles over about 1/3 volume. I’m taking matters into my own hands and have ordered the foam tape called for in the A4 TSB. It’s readily available from dealers and ECS tuning.

I have also found that the center dash speaker will make some noise. I have a very early build car and discovered Audi has since added a full layer of felt under that grill. I bought the new part number for around $35 and the problem was solved. Also, pay close attention to the lower door speaker grills. I’m still getting an occasional rattle from the passenger side that I think is the grill. My gut says the speaker replacement was needless. I’m going to start messing with that grill this weekend.

I’ve been in this car for about 6 weeks now and the build quality is nowhere near as solid as my prior A5. I gave my 2013 A5 with B&O to my daughter and have regretted it more than once. I’ll get over the hump eventually with this car, but breaking her in is way more work this time around.

I had the same problem on my 2019 coupe. I could barely turn up the radio with any bass and the sub would rattle like crazy.
I removed the speaker cover on the Sub side of the rear parcel tray and noticed the same as you did as the back part of the sub would bounce up and down very easy . From the underside in the trunk I could push the sub speaker up while the radio was playing and stop the rattle noise. After further inspection and using my borescope I could see that a bolt was missing that secured the back of the sub to the rear deck (see pictures). I explored removing the rear parcel tray to access the bolt location to install a new bolt, but could not find any online description on how to remove it. It looks like you need to remove the two side trim moldings on both sides of the rear window to gain access to remove parcel tray. I did not have time to tear into the car so I found some fairly dense 1/4" x 1" foam and inserted it between the sub mount and the rear deck at the location the screw was suppose to be (see picture that you can see foam in the screw hole). That has stopped the rattle completely, so when I have some more time and maybe I can find steps to remove rear parcel tray I will tackle installing the screw that it seems Audi forgot to install.

Where does one get the full list of TSBs on this car?

Ok, I lied. I decided to mess with the grills last night. If you decide to remove them, obviously use a plastic trim tool. Start from the front and work aft. The rear most corner has "hook" that points rearward and that could break if you start there or are not slow, careful and deliberate. I didn't approach it this way on the first grill, but got lucky and didn't break anything. I also did this in a heated garage so the plastic wasn't brittle from the sub-freezing temperatures we've been having here in the midwest.

The only thing I could find loose was the LED light source that is connected to the back of the grill. I put some adhesive felt tape between the grill and the LED unit. Was much quieter on the way to work this morning.

Whoever is doing interior final assembly and QA for Audi must be a new employee.

Yesterday, I received the dampening strips that the A4 TSB I referenced calls for. I bought four in total, but two is enough to do the TSB work on both speaker grills. The grills were relatively easy to address, just go slow when prying the front portions up from the deck and you should be fine. Inspect the attachment bars or clips (don't know what to call them) on the grill. I found one broken (I think from the dealer's attempt, I was really careful and slow).

Fix complete, but the rattles continued. Other places you should look include the seat release levers in the trunk. They are attached to the underside of the parcel shelf and the handles rattle like an SOB. I used extra pieces of the dampening strip mentioned above to place between the handle assembly and the parcel shelf. Then I placed some thin felt tape just above each seat release lever (1 on the left, 2 on the right). Finally I placed the same thin felt tape between the parcel shelf and the package hooks (this may be a coupe thing).

That has calmed things down dramatically in the back, but the there is still something that will buzz and rattle at high subwoofer volume levels. RichardG, I may investigate your missing screw theory and quick fix next. For now, I'm setting the sub below 50% and am enjoying a better (but not perfect) stereo experience.

B&O system here. I got my rear deck rattle to go away by putting some foam/rubber in between the rear deck and the speaker grille at the location shown in figure 2 in the TSB, but also had to put some material between the rear portion of the grill/rear deck closest to the rear window.

When I took the rear speaker grille completely off there was zero rattle as well. Thought about just leaving it off and securing the mids speaker to the rear deck some other way instead of it being attached to the grille.
