0W40 just means you'll have better oil flow at lower temperatures compared to 5W40. That is what the "W" rating on oil grades refers to, stands for "winter".

No concern. I ran M1 0w-40 for over 40k miles before switching to Rotella 5w40.

I am pretty sure “W” stands for weight.

No reason other than Walmart had it on sale when I was oil shopping haha. Runs great in both the q5 (V6T) and B5 1.8t.

I just bought some. Doing my oil change today actually. Mobil1 is the best. They put the most research into oil and they are a category 5 oil, I think.

It does actually stand for winter:

The "w" in motor oil stands for winter. The first number in the oil classification refers to a cold weather viscosity. The lower this number is, the less viscous your oil will be at low temperatures. For example, a 5W- motor oil will flow better at lower temperatures than a 15W- motor oil. The higher number, following the “w” refers to hot weather viscosity, or how fluid your oil is at hot temperatures. The higher the number, the thicker the oil at a specified temperature.

Use 0W-40. Usually it has "higher grade" base oil than 5W-40. For example castrol OE 5W-40 (stuff sold to dealerships) is formulated with cheaper base oil than castrol 0W-40 (will say made in Belgium or German).. search on this topic at bobistheoilguy.com

Mobil 1 0W-40 is not true group V (ester based) oil. It is still a very good oil for the price. I believe it is group III (hydrocracked ultrarefined oil) + maybe some group IV (PAO) + additives. I run M1 in my Audi

It is my understanding that true Group V oils are brands like high end stuff like Motul and Redline.. but $15/qt engine oil is probably overkill outside of professional racing. Look up MSDS in oils you buy,it is often a blend of different base oilz..

I went to proof read my comment because, I forgot if it was group V or IV. I thought I made the change but, it did not. Thank you for correcting the incorrect statement.

higher weight = higher drag, windage and more heat (and worse heat transfer to the cooling system) and less hp delivered to the wheels. On the flip side, if you don't have enough film thickness you don't have enough lubrication. Really need an oil pressure gauge to see if your oil is in the right range for your driving environment. In racing, we often run "0" weight oil or as thin as will deliver about 10psi oil pressure per 1,000 rpm.
