Trickle Charging - Engine bay or on the Battery

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Did a quick search but no definitive answer to this. I know that you're supposed to jump the car from the terminals in the engine bay, but what about hooking up a trickle charger? Should this connect in the engine bay or to the battery itself?

    Thanks!

I don't think it would matter. I have a few of them. Keep meaning to get the cigarette lighter adapter for convenience.

Likely doesn't matter, I personally always charge at the battery.

I've got my RS4 connected to the tender via the engine bay jumper posts. Did the same with my M3 and never had any issues.

Doesn't matter as it's the same circuit and low amperage pull.

Since new (11/2006), I have been maintaining the battery by plugging into the 12V accessory (cigarette lighter) receptacle in the center console. My original battery lasted exactly 10 years.

I have a pig tail adapter (CTEK) directly connected to the battery. I have it terminate just outside of the carpeted flap/cover in the trunk. I can easily hookup the trickle charger there and close the trunk as the cable is thin enough to not interfere with anything.

I only trickle my RS4 here and there...most of the time I have the trickle charge set on my Porsche because it eats through batteries unlike the RS4.

As an aside, I finally changed my stock RS4 battery (mfg in 12/06) about 6 months ago. I wasn’t having any battery or cold start problems but figured I should get ahead of it before I got stranded somewhere. Amazing how long the Bosch OEM AGM battery lasts! Oh, and I never trickled it until about a year ago.

OEM is a Varta made by Johnson Controls. Did you have a Bosch in your car?
Re charging, I go direct to battery as I want the most current I can get to charge my Odyssey.

Oh, maybe it wasn’t Bosch...don’t remember. I probably just assumed that. But it was the original mfg battery for sure.
