Could be but will they sell for what some are being asked for?

As they get more and more rare they will....I recently went to the stealership and mentioned the thought of selling my RS and I had the advisors almost do backflips as well as the tech who serviced it lol.

interesting indeed. My car has some rough edges that I'm working to get fixed but I don't think I would buy one for any more, despite the condition, than what I paid. I'm surprised they aren't selling at a higher price with the rarity, engine, and wide body fenders. I love this car.

The RS4 will become a cult car...and only those who understand its breed will have consideration for it.

    Disagree totally. Still going down.

Asking price and selling price are not the same thing. Also, prices have not been trending upwards, even for low mileage cars.

Is that why you have three of them? Trying to be the De Beers of the Audi RS4?

I've owned (and sold) 3 of them.

It's a legitimate strategy for some cars - that's how EAG became what it is in the BMW world.

Not for these cars - too many made and demand isn't there yet. Maybe in 5 years.

True on timing...they are not there yet, but depreciation has slowed a bit.

Agreed, the depreciation rate on some of the nicer examples with a rare color or option is definitely beginning to approach zero.

Mine goes up in value for every mile I put on it... so now it’s $104,000

    I disagree a little here. Too many? They made 10k e39 M5s and there's what 2200 RS4s? EAG has a 25k mile example for $70k list.

I will agree we are still a couple of years from appreciation. Although I do think depreciation is very close to zero on these cars.

I do think it will take someone doing what EAG has done for BMW to get values up there though.

Of course you do. You've hit up every value thread reminding everyone how you sold yours at the "peak" and how it's been a downward slide from there. I see this kind of seller-confirmation all the time - your arm must be sore form patting yourself on the back. Maybe you're sour, I don't know - but it's getting pretty tiring to see a former owner shit all over the cars well after they sold theirs.

There have been plenty nice, stock, low-mile examples selling at or near asking prices and IMO - they might not be going up or down much but they are certainly solid. ...and it makes sense, that a car like this had to bottom out on depreciation at some point. Seeing plenty in the 30s with low mileage. Some in the 20s with higher miles and/or wear and tear.

    ???

Maybe you have me confused for someone else. I just sold an RS4 last month - there was never a “peak”, they’re depreciating cars still. If you watch auction prices, time on market, etc, you’ll see that these cars aren’t appreciating yet, nor are they fully done depreciating, except for (as I already said) very specific color/option combos with super low miles.

I believe the only reason cars sit are because some prices are unrealistic. $45k for 40k miles (example) and silver interiors.

They made more E39 M5s, but there were (and are) a lot more M enthusiasts than there are dedicated RS enthusiasts, because M has a much longer history in the US than RS.

Look at 1M vs TTRS prices. Both were manual only, limited production cars (I believe North America production figures were around 1400 for TTRS and 1000 for 1M), but 1M prices are nearly double TTRS prices in a lot of cases.

The demand for RS cars is lower, and these cars aren't really that old in terms of being an eventual classic.

Usually, the dip in "classic" car value continues until the cars are around 15-20 years old. I think it's definitely a good time to buy an RS4 if you're going to hold long term, but know that if you sell in a year or two, you will probably see a loss.

looks like the RS4 prices are starting to trickle up.

I think this is because people who buy performance cars are people who love to drive for drivings sake most of the time. And by and large, M cars are better drivers cars than RS cars are. The E39 M5 is widely considered to have one of the best chassis in a sedan of all time. TTRS vs 1M is also a perfect example of that.
This is also why I believe the B7 RS4 will one day rise. It's the closest Audi have gotten (R8 excluded) to a true drivers car, though to be frank it's still a little understeery and safe compared to an M3.

Unrealistic asking prices does not equal appreciation

Frankly, M owners and even Porsche owners are a lot more realistic on their selling price. I've been looking for an RS4 for quite a while and the sellers I dealt with were just unrealistic. Whereas I can pick up a Porsche 997S for ~$35k all day long. 50k miles or under and mint! Ok ok, not a sedan... BUT I made a deal on a 2011 Comp M3, slicktop, manual, original owner, 50k miles for $31k that I should be picking up this weekend.

I'd still like to get into an RS4, but at this rate it's going to take me another year or two lol and I need something to drive in the meantime!

Bummer you weren't able to locate an RS4 man, I know you've been looking for a while. Coming from a E9x M3 myself, hopefully the previous owner has some oil sample analysis history to accompany the M3, gotta keep an eye on those rod bearings (yes, even the 2011+ years).

Let's not compare a car they made over 10k of and it has a successor (e92) or a car (997) that also has a successor. I mean the cheapest 997S under 50k is listed at $40k so let's not say "all day long". The inventory of both 911s and M3s is significantly higher than a car they made ~2200 of and don't make anymore.

But hey I know of at least 3 cars I sent you that you would have bought but they were all gone in under 48 hours. Why? Because they were a deal vs something "unrealistic". Low miles isn't going to get easier to find.

Congrats on the M3. At first when I read the spec, particularly "slicktop", I was thinking e90... I'm like how the hell did he get that for $31k!?!? Either way, e92 or e90, that's a tremendous spec that you shouldn't lose much money on. I intend on getting into an e9x M sooner than later.

Alright perhaps I embellished a bit trying to make my point but still.

No doubt you have a point as well with the production numbers. However keep in mind I bought an e90 ZCP of which there were only 1220 imported. So not completely apples and oranges.

Regarding the ones you sent me... not the right color combos. No doubt if I was a bit more flexible on that front I could have found something.

I budgeted it into my price. Just going to get those done right out of the gate. It’s out of pocket but I’ll get it back on the resale no doubt.

How the hell did you pull that off for $31k!? That's what I initially thought when you phrased it "slicktop" as opposed to CF roof but then I'm thinking not for $31k. I feel like that's even cheap for an e92 with that spec (CF roof) but that's crazy for an e90.

Wasn’t that hard really. Just about finding someone that actually wants to sell his car!!! Also he had some deferred maintenance I’m going to have to do and a few other points I used to negotiate. Only bummer is that it has Nav and I really wanted to the single hump. I relented though since it hit all the other things I was looking for.

Ya but now you are just isolating something that isn't desirable to everyone. Same as Ti. I wouldn't pay more for it. Sure you can say it's a bit more track focused but to the majority of people ZCP is just wheels and a slightly lower suspension. There are ~4500 other E90 M3s. Hardly worth comparing to a car they don't import to the US anymore.

If the B8 RS4 came to the US. The B7 would not command as high a price. It would still command a bit more being manual but not what the current market is.

That's the great thing about an open market. If you want one, you have the option to pay. If you don't, you can complain about it ;) I kid. But in reality most people seem to take 6+ months before finding a low mile one. Unfortunately you've just restricted your search heavily based on spec. Less than 100, most likely less than 30 that fit your parameters.

    Touché.

Back on topic... I do think the RS4 done depreciating at least for well kept under 100k cars. It’s just too special and new sort of equivalents are so expensive such as the RS5 sporback.

    Measurably appreciating... that’s another story.

I don't think that will ever happen. I certainly won't see it, I enjoy driving too much to let something "rot" in the garage in hopes of huge appreciation. I'll be happy with cost of ownership appreciation but I won't ever count on it.

This is also why I believe the B7 RS4 will one day rise. It's the closest Audi have gotten (R8 excluded) to a true drivers car, though to be frank it's still a little understeery and safe compared to an M3.
