    Well confusing for now lol.

Also have had a few times where Android Auto has shut off on the MMI - or lost connection with phone, not sure yet. Waze doesn't remember destination info when you rejoin MMI Android. Very annoying!

I just wrote about the very same thing where AA sometimes loses connection irrespective of me using Google maps or Waze.

    Carplay,

Do you have any ideas other than changing the USB cable to make it more stable. Not suggesting anything wrong with the software. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10 running Oreo so working with the latest gear, software.

    Poison,

I want to make sure you're clear, I don't think my challenges have anything to do with the software provided by Carplay. I'm sure it has something to do with the cable, phone I'm using.

The first post at the beginning of the thread doesn't mention anything about needing a windows machine that runs a certain version of windows, but in a few posts I've seen this mentioned - is this the case? If so, can we get this added to the list of things required in the first post?

Thanks to all who have provided info in this thread - I used AA in a Silvercar over the weekend and am deciding to pull the trigger on this update.

No issues whatsoever on Apple Carplay. Stable and gltich free.

Got to remember the smartphone functionality is just using the MMI as an external display, nothing else. The functionality, apps and processing is all performed by the phone.

I’m in the UK, so running Carplay_Audi’s European sw version.

So I’ve spent today on the road, with some 7 hours of driving, split into two legs. Plenty of time to make use of AA, with maps and music streaming from my Galaxy Note, running Android 9.0 (Pie)

My main comment is that the Android Auto navigation integration onto the MMI does not appear to be stable.

Navigation of more than a few miles is almost unusable, with the MMI Smart Phone screen randomly crashing multiple times during a journey. When i restart it, Navigation is reset, meaning you have to input the destination again (or voice command it in) then step through a list of similar named places etc. etc.

Crashes whether I use Waze or Google Maps, regardless of simultaneously streaming audio, or listening to radio.

As a test, I ran Android Auto on my phone, disconnected from MMI. Navigation was fine, while streaming audio. No App crashes. So definately an MMI connectivity/SmartPhone integration issue.

Streaming audio only (Spotify) over the MMI worked fine without any MMI crashes. Only made a couple of outgoing calls (no incoming) No issues.

Also worth noting that in navigation mode, you do not get navigation info on the dashboard between the dials. You do get an active map, but it’s not Waze (looks like Audi Nav map) without any navigation overlay.

You also get the chime/warning message when you turn off the car, that your phone is still connected to the car. Pretty useless if you ask me as it chimes once and the message disappears in about 4 seconds lol.

So overall, I’d say a B- experience as far as Android is concerned. I’ll use it for streaming Spotify and making calls, not for Navigation at this stage, which is a real disappointment, since Audi’s Google Maps integration is ending in 2020.

I may have to buy an iPhone, just for the hell of it. NOT

Sad to hear John, certainly not my experience with all types of Apple phones Ive tried. Carplay in general is much more stable than Android Auto, theres a lot more issues reported with AA. This is with other cars too.
Do you have access to another Android phone, would be interesting to see if you get the same issues with another model of phone or version of Android.
Or alternatively try the same phone on an Audi with smartphone activated from factory.

Has anyone check to see if any fault codes are thrown after this activation? Just had mine successfully done and I am about to head to the Dealer for 20K service. I'd like to know if anyone found anything post upgrade?

BTW... for those with the upgrade... I notice when I start the car the MMI ALWAYS goes into a SmartPhone connection screen vs the last screen I used. Is this normal? I typically have the Nav screen up at start. Might just be because I shut the car off with CP active?

    TIA

That's probably because you shut off the car with Carplay active, mine always goes into the last screen I used, never tried shut the car off with Carplay active.

Maybe i think you have automatic carplay activation upon detection of audi Bluetooth. There is an option in android Auto, maybe there is similar option selected in the carplay.

After activation you ll get 2 errors im 5f controller, 1 can be removed other cannot. You have to refer previous pages of this thread. There are pictures and details.

That's bad news! I've just ordered a USB Ethernet adapter

Maybe it works better with the US firmware because this is the first bad report I've seen.

I'll hold off for the time being...

Seems like it's an Android thing, possibly specific to the actual handset type/version or the cable, others have reported no problems with AA. I'm using an iPhone with my M2016 RS7 that I had CarPlay activated on and I've had absolutely zero issues with it, it's indistinguishable from using CarPlay on the 2017 RS7 I had before this car which was enabled from the factory.

Zero issues here using AA on European FW. In my last car AA was a nightmare until I upgraded to a decent braided cable. No random disconnect issues since.

    Thats good to know.

Perhaps there is a quality issue with the cable Im using (Brodit mount with integrated power/sync cable) or even the length of the cable.

I tried using it again today on a short journey, and it wouldn't hold up for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Now to find a quality cable and see what happens (Reminds me of the Audi AMI saga when first trying to connect to iPhones/iPods a few years back LoL)

    Cheers,
    John.

Is there a way to program the phone button to go to the Apple Carplay/Android Auto screen when in a different screen of MMI (Radio or Media)?

This is the one thing lacking about this upgrade. Most other cars that I've used AA in automatically swap when you plug the phone in.

It’s a lacking of the Audi implementation not the upgrade, in my 2017 RS7 with CarPlay/AA enabled from factory it also didn’t switch automatically to the phone when you plugged it in.

Isnt the carplay supposed to work wirelessly through bluetooth? My brother tried to connect his Iphone X to my A7 with the bluetooth and go to smartphone connection to start carplay wirelessly but it doesnt work. Only works with the cable plugged in like the Android carplay. Maybe its how it is supposed to be because BMW has wireless Carplay and Mercedes does too whereas both have wired android auto. Eitherway the Carplay and Android Auto workes flawlessly on my 2016 Audi A7.

A little update today i managed to scan my car. Got 3 faults, 1 fault related to svm and 2 other sporadic faults related to instrument cluster glitches.

I was able to clear svm fault original value 7721 selection hexadecimal c9d2 xor new vakue bef3.

But i am curious about other 2 sporadic faults which are most likely causing instrument cluster glitch. are they firmware related or something els is going here.

Help woukd be highly appreciated. Screenshot_20190525-101005_OBDeleven.jpegScreenshot_20190525-100953_OBDeleven.jpeg

So how bad are the glitches? Are they very noticeable? I would like the convenience of CarPlay, but don’t want to screw up my car experience. I am buying an off lease 2016 A6 and this will be my first Audi!

I am running MMI software version MHI2_US_AU57x_K0539 currently on my 2016 S6. The dealer says they were unable to successfully complete the MMI TSB updates on my car due to my aftermarket audio equipment. Who knows if that was actually a problem with my equipment or them. I had factory B&O now using the NavTV Zen V interface off optical.

I had my software updated by the dealer for bluetooth and the volume dropping out when you put the car in reverse and I have no problems.

Side note.. CarPlay doesn't use bluetooth when activated..

I’ve not had any issues at all on 2016 S6, and also have the Zen-V box. The ‘carplay upgrade’ is really simply loading (2017 I believe) European MMI software onto your MMI, so should hopefully also get rid of your bluetooth issue.

Also, your dealer is incorrect. You can have new MMI software uploaded. They simply need to specify the option of ‘no amplifier’ since the MMI is talking to the Zen V and not your original B&O amp that it was expecting to see.

Finally, I tried to respond to your DM but your inbox wouldn’t let me.

I changed the cable on my Galaxy Note 9 (USB to USB-C) and MMI Android Auto is still crashing.

I can’t even stream music to MMI Smartphone without it crashing and stopping playback before a single track has finished playing.

Im running the latest version of Android (v9.0 Pie) and the latest update of Android Auto on my phone.

I can stream to the MMI via Bluetooth, without enabling Audi Smartphone, and there are no issues (just no MMI screen displays)

Anyone else running the European s/w and using an Android device, and having issues?

    Cheers,
    John.

Reverting back to the question I asked earlier, isn't Apple CarPlay supposed to work wirelessly in addition to cable connection? Mines doesn't with the iPhone X and only works with cable. As for android auto I know it only works through the cable usb connection with my Note 8.

My understanding is that it depends on implementation. This platform was not designed to be wireless CarPlay.

I live in the United states but I have the exact same phone as you a note 9 running pie and I am not experiencing any crashes.

Hi, I used AA on Samsung galaxy s8 hardly for 15 mins i didn't had any issues like you described. Its could be that (m not sure) maybe some installation files were corrupted ?. I would rather use carplay, why dont you buy a cheap 50 60€ iphone for only carplay purpose ? you cant do much with AA anyway carplay has more diversity in terms of Apps.

PS: i have same firmware as yours+ latest Audi maps 2018/2019.

I get people wanting something extra or adding a feature that didn’t come with the car but after driving my wife’s Q7 last night the Apple play implementation for Audi stinks in my opinion I’m so glad I don’t have it in my RS7. The Audi map is great, I can play music as listen to audible easily from my phone. I can read text messages on the MMI screen and send text through voice.

    I’m good!

Thanks for the clarification! It works great so far with the cable for carplay and android auto.

CarPlay is up and running now. So far appears to be working!

I had a very scary moment with @carplay_audi with an unresponsive MMI in the middle of the update saying "Not yet initialized!" Eventually a hard reset worked, and it picked back up with Step 4/10. I thought I had bricked my car...

Not sure what went wrong. I was not running original software after my dealer updated per TSB for the bluetooth issue and they ran into troubles. Some of the files were flagged as a "downgrade" due to the prior software change. And I already had a 5F fault BEFORE this CarPlay upgrade from the dealer MMI update. And I had another 5F fault before too about communication probably due to having aftermarket audio equipment and no longer the B&O amp.

    Hi John.

Sitting in the drivers seat are you plugged into the USB port on the the far left or the USB port closest to you?

I’m plugged into the USB next to the passenger side, the port that has a picture of a phone on it.

I’m going to try and find a USB-C cable that’s certified to USB v3.1. I have a feeling that the Brodit cable isn’t certified, and the replacement cable I bought was an unmarked one from a mobile phone shop.

    I’ll keep the forum updated

Humour me and try AA connected to the USB closer to the drivers seat and see if AA performs better.
