    Secondary air injection

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’ve had a secondary air injection code (can’t remember exact code) intermittently over the past year or so. I’ve looked it up and talked to my mechanic and to the extent of my knowledge there’s no use other than to lower emissions by pumping air into the exhaust on cold starts. I live in a state with no emission testing so is this just a code I can keep clearing or should I get my secondary air injection system repaired? Lmk if you guys have heard of any other issues stemming from this. Thanks!

Which bank was it, do you remember? Does "P049100 - Secondary Air Injection System (Bank 1)" ring a bell?

There is a warranty extension on the secondary air system. 10 years/120k miles. As long as you're not TD1 then the dealership will fix it for your under warranty.

Yes that was the code. By intermittent I mean that it would only pop the code on cold starts about 1/10 times. It hasn’t happened in probably a month or two.

Do you mind providing a PDF/your findings regarding this, my man? Regardless where you bought your car from, there is no barrier on amount of owners, etc...so long as you're within that mileage range and you don't get flagged for TD1, yeah?

I don't have the PDF but I do have personal experience. I was the 2nd owner on my car. I was out of the CPO warranty (over 100k miles) but still under 120k miles. I got the secondary air code and it was repaired under the extended warranty by the dealership. I don't know if this applies to cars in Canada too but I would hope so.

Wow, phenomenal - thank you, chilort! I happened to OBDeleven my vehicle about a month ago, and since ownership...that's been the only thing that popped up (ever), and happened to be intermittent.

The car's been exceptional otherwise and hopefully will remain as such (knock on wood). I will absolutely confirm if this applies to us in Canada, so I'll remain as optimistic as I can!

Send me your VIN and I'll see if you have the extension. I'm a master tech at Audi.

Had my SAI repaired by dealer here in Canada with no issues. Only catch is that both "banks" had to have the issue flagged for the repair to be covered under warranty. In my case both banks were flagged, even though the recurring code was almost only ever P0491 (I might have had the other bank code come up once, but never returned. Was definitely logged though).

Either way, should be no troubles for you to get it looked after provided you're within the permitted km limit. Car ran well after the service and definitely started better in the cold.

    Best of luck.

I have had the problem and reached out to Audi to confirm the warranty. The letter i received indeed confirmed it, but only for 2 specific parts in the SAI system. If i take it to Audi and they tear the whole thing apart and find that its NOT the two specific parts mentioned, im about 1500 bucks. Needless to say I have no taken them up on that offer yet.

Definitely reach out to Audi of Canada and see if you can get clarification. i tried to upload an image of the letter but it didnt work, so heres a copy/paste of the text:

Thank you for contacting Audi of America regarding your beautiful 2013 Audi S4. I understand your
concern for the check engine light that gave a fault that may be in relation to the P0491 Secondary Air
    Injection System.
I see here that you have warranty extensions specific to your vehicle, the Secondary Air Change Over
Valve and the Natural Valve Leak Detection Switch. Both of these concerns have extended warranties of
    10 years or 120,000 miles.
We advise to have your vehicle diagnosed at an authorized Audi dealership. If the Secondary Air Change
Over Valve is the diagnosis, warranty coverage will be offered.

If I recall, I only had 1 bank throwing the code.

I’m currently sitting with a bank 1 code for the last 3 months. Audi Canada won’t touch it without both codes. CPO car.

Had this on my car over the summer. Ended up being the SAI sensor and it’s a HUGE bitch to change out. It’s in the back of the supercharger way under the vac lines and it snaps in. I don’t wish changing the sensor even upon my worst enemy. Good luck.

So many mixed replies on whether you need both codes or not! Audi of Canada said on the phone to me that you do indeed need them but I just spoke to a local Dealership that said as long as you have one and they determine it has the faulty valve, the work will be covered.

As others have said, I'm concerned of them putting all those hours in only to find that it is not covered and have to pay out of pocket...

I spoke to my dealer advisor, basically he told be me, it depends if the car still have warranty or not. If the car have warranty, you get one code with a check engine, they do what ever needs to be done to get the issue fix. So yes, the cleaning will be covered. However, if you don’t have warranty and you have to rely on the extended 10yrs/120miles warranty, you’ll need both codes for Audi Canada or USA to pay the bill.

Called Audi America today and they confirmed the extended warranty. As long as it is inspected and the issue is confirmed to be carbon cleaning needed. Setting up appointment with local Audi dealer tomorrow.

Wanted to chime in as well... I too have a 2014 and have been told that the emissions extension is not applicable for my car. Based on what I've read, it seems that the 3.0T engines up to the 2013 model year are covered.

Hey guys, any luck getting the 2013+ cars covered? I recently got the P0491 and P0492 Secondary Air Injection System Insufficient Flow Bank 1/2 codes and MIL. I called the dealership to see if it would be covered and they said I need to bring the car in for them to read the codes and will be able to see if there's coverage after that. I'd like to walk in knowing that I'd be covered and not have to worry about a $1800+ repair. Anyway, I've got a 2014 with 69,000 miles. Thanks.

Reach out to Audi of America. Having a letter from them before going to the dealer will help immensely.

I have tried to get answers from AoA for a month now about why the changed the TSB on this to include 2014-2016 models but did not include them in the extension. I did as AoA suggested and took it to my local dealer. All I did was spend 155.00 to find out that I have both codes(which I already knew) and to hear that my vehicle is not covered. I was told that my 2014 Audi Q5 3.0T “was not manufactured with the part” that causes the issue covered under the TSB and that the TSB is VIN specific. I am waiting on answers to some fairly difficult questions from AoA.

Please let me know what you hear from AoA. Is your vehicle a 2014-2016?

Just adding my experience. 2013 S4 with an early build date. I had the codes for insufficient flow on both banks a couple years ago with just under 120K miles. The dealer cleaned out the SAI ports in the heads with the pressure washer tool specific to this application - no charge. I notice in the thread that there is mention of other SAI system components that could be problematic: 'the Secondary Air Change Over
Valve and the Natural Valve Leak Detection Switch', which is a different problem, and probably covered under a different extended warranty and TSB. I have only been able to find a TSB for the clogged SAI ports showing coverage for 2010-2012, so I suspect that the dealer performed my cleaning under 'goodwill'. Here is a TSB PDF link.

There is no detriment to the engine, or how it drives, if you don't get this fixed. When SAI doesn't work properly, it only delays the time that the catalytic converters take to start converting exhaust gas compounds to less environmentally harmfull compounds. This delay only happens at a cold start, as the cats need to be hot before they "work". The SAI system injects air so that the extra gasoline hydrocarbons burn as they pass thru the exhaust manifold into the cat, heating them up quicker.

Well then, this kind of sucks for me. Not only have I not heard back from AoA at all, but I am now late to get my emissions done. I'm hoping that the emissions doesn't read the stored codes and fails my car.

What do you mean by "stored codes", is the CEL currently on? Most States will pass you as long as the CEL is off, and you only have up to 1 monitor that has not run.

Yes the CEL is on and last I checked it’s both banks throwing the code. And unfortunately my ELM adapter doesn’t seem to want to connect to my phone
