In my opinion, the things that really hurt the RS5 coupe are:
1. Very niche market. Likely too expensive for those just starting their careers. Impractical for those that are established at work with families. And, one of many options (718, 911, R8, Maserati, Vette), for those who no longer have kids to cart around and have extra money to burn.
2. Terrible lease rates.
I was ok with the having an impractical coupe with 3 kids. But, it can be a huge pain in the a$$ - especially when loading my 4yo in the back before / after work. I assume most folks would not want to deal with it - you should see the looks I get from parents at daycare as I am contorting myself to load and buckle my little one in the back.
Seven years ago I leased the M3 because BMW had stupid low lease rates and 7-10 years from now, I will be looking for a 911 or R8 (maybe sooner if I convince my wife that a sports car is practical with 1 kid in middle school and the other in college.
