    Lightbulb Winter tires RS7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just landed a CPO 2016 RS7 with 20” wheels on it. Lots of snow on the ground here in Boston so I need to swap out the existing summer tires for some winter tires. The dealership is suggesting either the Pirelli Winter Sottozero3 or the Continental WinterContact SI, both at 245/40-r20. The Pirellis are about $400/corner and the Contis are about $375/corner. Thoughts on these for good performance on the RS7 but also good in snow? Thanks in advance.

I run Dunlop SP winterSport 4Ds, 275/30R/21s, on my RS7P in Colorado as a daily driver. The car and tires outperform my SQ5 with 275/40R/20 Blizzacks in terms of stopping, acceleration, and cornering in snow and ice. I can often turn off traction control and stability control, and use most of the power.
Contis will stop better then the Pirellis, a friend, pro racer, compared his RS7 with Pirellis against my Dunlops.
    Contis are my summer tire.

The Dunlops aren’t an option at this time. It’s the Pirellis or the Contis.

I just had a set of Sottozero 3's (255/35/20) delivered today from Tirerack for my brand new 2018 S6. Total price to my door with tax was 1,232.90
Anyone quoting you $400/corner is definitely on the high side. It's costing me $35/wheel to pull the factory summer tires off and mount the winter tires. It's $343 all in per corner. It would be $10/corner cheaper if they didnt have to remove the existing tires.

I like the Contis better the the Pirellis. This based on same car (RS7P) comparisons with Blizzaks, which are always great, in the mix. The Dunlops are just a surprise performer.

The selection of winter tires seems to be in short supply, I originally planned to order a set of 19" Verde Axis wheels with Hankook I cept Evo winter tires for under $1800 shipped to my door from CARiD. I contacted them on Wed. last week when I got word my car would be delivered on Thursday, PODS was scheduled for Friday morning and I took delivery Friday night. I wasn't ordering anything until I had the new car in my possession. Saturday was crazy so I went to order on Sunday morning and they were out of stock on the tires. Being in the Chicagoland area, I needed winter tires sooner than later....... decided to order tires to fit the factory wheels (20" Black Optic wheels) and I will purchase a nice aftermarket wheel for summer duty that will accept the stock tire size of 255/35/20. Looking at Vorsteiner and Forgestar currently but open to other options. Seems the S6 is not the easiest car to find wheels for???

For the stock 255/35/20...... Tire Rack only has the Sottozero 3's available for a winter option.

Your dealer should be able to get any tire through Dealer Tire. They have tires that Tire Rack and most stores are sold out of. Plus they should be cheaper. I have purchased several sets of winter tires for about $125 less per tire then I could find anywhere.

I took delivery of my 2018 last January and didn’t have many options at that time of year. While I wanted the Continentals, I ended up with Pirelli Sottozero 3s. They’re acceptable for dedicated snow tire in Chicago area and are substantially better than “all seasons.” Mostly cold and wet with occasional light snow here, and I don’t need to worry about deep snowfall. Hence the winter performance category works for me.

My wife’s Q7 is fitted with Continentals. They’re quieter and more competent in deeper snow.

I’d take either over an “all season” but would go with Continentals if I could choose between the two just for the slightly better deep snow traction - in case it’s relevant - and slightly quieter ride.

I also run the Dunlop SP Wintersport 4Ds 275/30R/21's. Great tire for the winter stuff here in NH.

My RS7 came with a Winter wheel set, Sotozero II on 20" wheels to give me 275/35/R20, I am mixed on them, not as good on ice packed snow or ice as Blizzaks were on my A4 and now a heavier car to boot. Since they don't offer the Dunlops in that exact size, can I run a 275/30/R20 Dunlops on this wheelset or will that throw things off which I imagine it could?

I live in a ski town so true Winter tires are a must have.

According to some Euro studies the Dunlop was a top performing snow and ice tire. It just happens to be exceptional in the 275/30R/21. Unfortunately they don't make a 20" version that is 27.5".
The 3D is available in a 265/35/20 V. No idea on how this tire performs.
Conti, Blizzak, Michelin would be the brands I would look at.
One thing to consider, is the internal rim profile. A ^ shaped rim will shed snow where a flat internal rim will build up snow and ice and quickly loose balance.
Rather annoying if you are constantly having to stop and claw packed snow out of your wheel. Upsets a good run of drifting at speed!

Think Im running Dunlops and have Pirelli's on the wifes car. No sense in really debating the issue as long as you have "winter" tires your good. Without them.....not so good

I've been impressed with the Pirelli's even though I've never used Pirelli's before. Just flying past cars on the highway here in Chicago during snowstorms.

Handling is great with the Pirellis. Stopping, not in the ballpark, 120+>0.
Again side by side comparison, 2 RS7s.
But then who really drives their car that hard in snow and ice?!

    Ski town also.

Great tire, Fit is not quite right, as OE tires at 27.5" really build up snow in the wheel well. At 28" OD, it would be an OK fit, as it is narrower.
If were were to look for a new optimal setup, I would look for 20" rims with an internal ^ shape (have to clear ceramic rotors too) to shed snow and a 255-275 wide 27" OD W or Y rated HP Winter tire.

Audi sort of has a Winter 20" set up that should clear the 420mm front brakes. Wheels are 20x8.5, they look similar to the standard RS7 20" set up but the face is super flat and wheels are cast. https://www.ebay.com/itm/AUDI-RS7-20...frcectupt=true

They have them in my size this year (275/35/R20) so I think I am pulling the trigger. We are already getting a good amount of snow and of course, ice'd up roads and I am just not sold on the Sotto II's at all, no confidence in them really.

There are 11/64 ( Approx 4.5mm ) left on the current tires but I can't see cheaping out and white knuckling it...

Have Pilot PA4's in 265/35/20 on my S7, working great so far in the snow, great traction. I ride in the raised suspension mode to get a little room in the wheel wells too. Image.jpegImage%20(2).jpeg
