    Pretty crazy. I had to watch some other auto trans educational videos to make any sense of this. I could barely understand 6 speeds!

    Interesting that each series of the 8HP has a different power rating. Looks like we have the “8HP55” which is rated to 550 ft/lb of torque. Good to know!

    8HP55 is actually 500 newton meter which translates to 405 ft-lbs.

    Ah good catch... seems like many here are surpassing that figure with mods and tunes....

    Wikipedia says 550nm

    I was answering the question on 8hp55. I never claimed thats what the tdi has. Raise thd vehicle and check part numbers to see which transmission the tdi has.

    ZF uses the last two digits to specify the torque rating. 55 is 550 NM, 70 is 700 NM, etc. So for us it is 550 NM or about 405 lb ft, as previously stated.

    I think wikipedia just has some bad information.

    ZF documents say the 8HP55A can take 650nm. So more like 480 ft/lbs.

    The 55A was a higher torque variant of the 55 made for some specific vehicles if I remember from reading before about these. Sometimes they provide a higher torque rating for diesel applications so likely the internals are a little different even if the trans model is the same.

    If I take these two sources together, the Q5's have the "0BK" transmission, which Ross Tech says is a "ZF 8HP55AF" with 700nm max torque.... The Q5, Q5 TDI and SQ5 transmissions all start with code "0BK" but ultimately have slightly different part numbers. Certainly possible they are slightly different variants, but I doubt it.

    I can't really find anything about the "8HP55" without the "A".

    That's my point, there's many modified 3.0T (Q5s and SQ5s) well north of 400 hp and 400 tq; meaning many would have grenaded their transmissions by now if they were limited to just 405 ft-lbs tq. 500 ft-lbs tq is much more likely to be accurate in my informed estimate.
