    Touch Up Paint Application Advice

So I have a rusted rock chip on my hood near the grill and got some oem touch up paint. What's the best method to apply it without it looking like a blob? I saw some mentioned building up layers with a toothpick?

Applying touch up paint can be very difficult if you are looking for it to truly blend in with the surrounding area. I would not recommend simply dotting the area with the touch up pen. Use the pen to put a small amount onto a plastic tray and use a very fine brush to cover the chipped area. Go as LIGHT of a coat as you can. As you said, slowly build up layers. You will also need to clear coat the section afterward using layers as well. Its best to give a minimum of 20 minutes between coats and plan to do 3-4. If you do not let the coats dry long enough the clear will take the paint right back off again. Once finished, and slightly raised compared to the surrounding area, let it cure for at least 4-5 days. At that point you can use a cutting polish for the final finish. This will help to blend that area in with the surrounding paint. This whole process is an art. And unfortunately sometimes just doesn't come out right and you have to repeat over the course of a few weekends. But, if you are patient and don't use too much paint it should come out well. You will likely always still know its there but others will have no idea.

Get either a Dr Color Chip or Langka chip repair kit.(Most like Dr Color chip better) It makes it much easier to do a respectable job filling in paint chips.Neither is expensive and both better than just doing it yourself ,especially if you have no previous experience doing it. http://www.langka.com/ https://www.drcolorchip.com/

I've also had great success with Dr. Colorchip. Be sure to go for the squeegee kit if you do. I've used it on multiple cars, multiple colors, always great results.

Then do Langka. You put on a blob of touch up paint and then use their 'blob eliminator" to get the paint to match the surface height. I used it and it works much better than just trying to blend it by hand or trying to incrementally fill in the chip.
