IE vs Unitronic for a stage 2 tune?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short, my CPO runs out late April, I’ve got a 034 HFC waiting to be installed.

I am in Canada. A dealer near me sells both, but IE is roughly $200 more at the current exchange rate.

I only have access to 91 octane.

They both seem to come on sale every 3 months or so. Even on sale IE is more expensive than Unitronic’s regular price.

    Unitronic pros:
    Cheaper
Good numbers measured on an engine dyno.
Dealer is local and headquarters is local-ish.

    Unitronic cons:
93 octane only, and the numbers were achieved with 93 octane.

    IE pros:
    91 octane tune available
Their numbers seem to indicate higher torque by quite a bit, on 91 octane to boot.
They seem to update their tunes quite a bit on the S4 platform.
They are willing to adapt a file should it act up on my particular car.

    IE cons:
More expensive by quite a bit
    Not local.

I’m not factoring in the whole flashing at home thing as both companies offer this.

Does anyone have anything to add or experiences that could help me out in choosing my future tune?

unfortunately I am unable to comment as I have a REVO tune.

Im just wondering, why would you even be considering a 93oct product , when you mentioned you only have 91 octane fuel available?

    I wouldn’t run a 93 octane filemwith 91 octane gas.

With that said, I went with IE and am very pleased.

Both Unitronic and the tuner have told me the tune adapts and that it shouldn’t cause problems.

What made you choose IE over the other options?

    Hey there!

Are you stating IE is more expensive... because of the import fees? or simply because our price is that much more expensive? I'd love to see these price comparisons if possible.

    Thanks!

It will only adjust up to -6 or -10 degrees of timing correction (I'm not sure the limit on the ECU). If you are approaching these maximum values running 91 gas on a 93 tune, you are not safe. I suggest to log the car extensively at first to see if you really can run a 93 tune with 91 gas. You are taking on a lot of risk. Make sure to log in the heat of summer with car fully warmed up.

    Hey there John!

    I would pay $650cad + taxes for Unitronic’s tune(about $748 total)

Your product shipped to my door comes out to $704.85usd (roughly $937 cad at today’s exchange rate) not counting the (probable) import fee I’d be getting hit with.

I’m convinced your product is awesome and I’m not knocking the pricing as in the US you guys are right in the market’s going rate and I am convinced the value you put in your product is fair, but as you can see the difference is pretty substantial.

The ECU's correction abilities on this particular platform shouldn't result in any concerns being had. I definitely suggest logging the car, but as mentioned, you shouldn't have any concerns while using quality 91 octane. If you notice alot of correction on the Stage 2 93 octane file, using quality 91 octane, send the logs over to support[at]getunitronic[dot]com and we'd be happy to make the necessary adjustments for you.

I am stage 2 IE and am more than pleased. Even at high altitude(Colorado) my avant pulls hard to redline and the comparison from stock to stage 2 is outstanding.

Your 2014 should be flex-fuel compatible which means your ECU will make the necessary adjustments to fueling and timing when using E85.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but on a difficulty scale, how challenging was it to install the FMIC for the IE tune?

I installed my ECS FMIC kit with the charge pipe kit in under 3 hours and was not in a hurry at all. It’s a pretty straightforward easy job with just a few tools.

With the weather, I haven't had a chance to quite test the IE Stage 2 a lot yet, but I will say, it definitely pulls to redline and I feel this is exactly how the A4 should have come from the factory. I have no doubt you'll be happy with it. I don't have any experience with Unitronic, but IE was also very easy to install. Their support has been exceptional, answering all my questions on Friday after their work hours!

Awesome. I'm still awaiting feedback from John regarding pricing as he seemed dubious his product was much more expensive than competitors here in Canada.
