Where to attach the Engine Stand

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I brought an engine stand, so i can flip the engine up-side-down to remove the bottom end and replace the piston rings.
But, what bolt holes do i use.
I'm guessing the top two in Yellow.
Do i use one of the bolt holes in Red?
    What about the right side?

    Thanks

On the front of the engine there are 4 threaded holes you can use as well. You will have to remove the belt idler to get to one of the lower ones. The stand takes some finessing to get bolted to but that's how I have mine so I didn't have to make one to mount as the VAG fixture does (using motor mount points). Granted it would be easiest to mount like the motor mounts, but I didn't plan thata well enough ahead...nor want to spend the $1000 on the VAG fixture.

If you search, there's a thread started not too long ago in our B6/B7 S4 section on how people chose to mount their engines to service with several really good approaches. One of them is like how I did, using the front of the engine and a standard engine stand.

Thanks guys. Sometimes my keenness gets ahead of me and I write the thread without searching first.
    Appreciate the suggestions and links

I also connected on the front side. If you didn't want to roll the engine, you could get by without disturbing the belt. Two holes up high are available, and those will be in tension when you bolt the stand arms to them. The bottom arms will be in compression, and you can just find a flat spot for each of them to support the engine. If you start rotating the engine, though, that will change and you should be bolted in to each of the arms.

So what is plan B. My block doesn't have any holes at the front, just solid lumps of metal.
Can I use the transmission bolt holes?

The 4.2 s4 has 4 holes on the front of the engine. I believe you have to remove the tensioner to get to one. (Maybe behind the crank pulley, can't remember)
I used the belhousing bolts with spacers as they are too long.

Front of the engine. This way you can tackle the chains when you buttoning it back up.

I have it temporarily mounted at the back, but the bottom right is a 10mm bolt in 3/4"
