This is the easiest choice I've ever seen in one of these "which to buy" polls... Q7. It's not even a contest (assuming reasonable mileage on Q)

    I wouldn't say it's the easiest.
You've given us nothing to go on. How is the Q7 equipped? Is it a Prestige? What's the mileage? Price difference? Anything?
If the Q7 is a base model or has more miles than 25K miles on it, it's not so simple. Those Altlas' are pretty nice from what I've heard.

Would be wife's car with 2 kids (car seats). Atlas was very nice and I actually like the Rline exterior more so than the Q7. Wife likes the more "prestigious brand name".

Atlas by far has more room and drives fine, my every day car is a 12 S4.

New Atlas around 42k, Audi 2.0T premium plus, 12k miles 43k.

The biggest thing for me is the optional engines. If you are in the base to middle line on both you are looking at the 2.0T.

My understanding on the Atlas the only way you can get the 4motion ( which was a must for me) is with the anemic 3.6 v6. And to me that is the biggest almost only reason I went Q7. The rest of the truck is a great kid mover family car. The R-line really dresses up the look also. Its got lots of room, comfortable and has some nice features.
Dont get me wrong that 3.6 is ok for your wife that just wants to turn the key start the engine, turn the radio up to drown out the kid noise and just run around town in. More than fine but once you drive the Q7 with the supercharged 3.0 there is NO comparison!!!
Do your self a BIG favor go drive each one and I think the decision will be much easier !!

He just said the Q7 has the 2.0T. The 2.0T, though nice, is IMO grossly insufficient for the big Q7.
You will have to drive both, given your comparing a 2.0T to a 3.6. They'l likely have similar power.

Yeah sorry I just saw that. I had the 3.0 in my head thinking about his S4.
I agree the 2.0 is nice but greatly underpowered for the Q7.

I personally cannot imagine the 2.0T in the Q7. I would dread getting loaner Q5's just based on that engine. I test drove the Atlas last year when I was shopping for a 3 row SUV and honestly found the 3.6 more than sufficient. It not supposed to be a race car and its not. Personally I'd go with the VW (seems to be a purchase based on the fact that you're cross shopping used) with the significantly longer 6yr 72k warranty. And honestly its roomier and drives 90% as nice.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

I would suggest driving both AND putting your normal load into each, eg car seats, bags, stroller, etc.

I’ve had the Atlas as a loaner on several occasions and we really liked it. Ended up going with a new Tiguan as a second car - we wanted something smaller than the Atlas. We looked at the Q5 and Q7, but found the Tiguan to be more than sufficient for what we needed and it offered 3 rows in a smaller package.

We cross shopped the Q7 3.0 with the Atlas for my wife and ended up with the Atlas. We test drove 5+ different Q7s and first time we drove the Atlas, we bought it. It’s no race car but has plenty of torque going up mountain passes fully loaded with kids, dogs and gear.

I would agree with you I test drove the V6 atlas and it obviously didnt wow me engine wise but was good enough. just having trouble paying over 45k OTD for a VW

you ask my opinion this is it :)

used q7 vs new Atlas as you described for me its the Atlas all day.

Mainly value and warranty. The Atlas 6 years and 72k miles vs what 1 or 2 years max with Audi (depends on in service data and your driving)

the q7 is years behind the technology of the Atlas all Q7 until the update in 2020 will be behind by years.

My only item to consider is go up to the SEL premium trim to get the digital cluster, 360 camera that works not like my b9 sq5 and cooled seats. You cant get the rline but for 2k you can get the bumper and get it fitted if you want to.
