Is there a way to recalibrate the transmission?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
On my c7 s7 there is a way to do this via vcds.

My q5 has specifically rougher downshift in D to D5. Told the dealer and of course they don’t feel anything and said they would do trans recalibration but of course didn’t.

Anyone know how to do this for 2015 q5 with vagcom?

    Thanks

If your Q5 is like mine it has a ZF8 transmission. If so, the answer is yes. HP Tuners self-tuning or with help of others here. Read the multiple threads. You need to buy the hardware dongle for your OBD2 port and 4 credits to unlock it, about $500 total. You cannot tune the ZF8 with VAGCOM (VCDS).

What engine do you have? The ZF8 TCU file is going to be different for the 2.0, 3.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI.

ZF8 downshift patterns are reasonably smooth in normal drive mode, but are more abrupt in sport mode by design.

How old and how many miles on your car? Perhaps you just need fluid drain and replacement.

Most of us are calibrating (tuning) the upshift programming for higher performance, mostly for changes in torque converter stall speed, AMAX launch control, higher auto upshift rpm and quicker upshifts. I've done nothing to change the downshift patterns, but it can be done with HP Tuners software.

I’m not looking to retune it. I want to have the car recalibrate the shifting. There is a way to do that specifically with c7s and there must be a way to do it for q5 since the tech mentioned it

Im trying to tell you the ZF8 in our Q5 cars must use TCU map modification to tune, adjust, or "calibrate" the shift patterns, either upshifts or downshifts, in each mode and for each gear and throttle position. There are endless adjustment options. HP Tuners is the only hardware and software equipment I know of that is available to us that can make changes to the downshift patterns of the ZF8. You can't do that with Vagcom.

The ZF8 has a torque converter and three electrically controlled solenoid activated clutches (actually five clutches, if you count the two brakes). It is not a so called dual clutch type setup.

This is true. The ZF8, as wonderful as it is, is still a slushbox.

I'll have to connect up the VCDS to check what options are available, but haven't read anyone doing this on the ZF8 trans for the Q5. What issues are you trying to correct?

There is actually a way to reset adaptive learning on the trans computer. Most high end scan tools with bi-directional support can erase them or a factory tool. That way trans history goes back to no input and will slowly "relearn" to pressures when shifting. Not calibration but does make a difference. I did it to mine with a Matco MaxMe with Audi Software. That is what the dealer is talking about when they say recalibrate. After the reset you will have "harsh" shifting for a couple drive cycles.

Yes that is what I am trying to do. The shift is harsh from d6 to d5.

Can this be done with vcds?

Don't own a VCDS so anyone chime in... don't see why not being VCDS is almost a dealer level tool. Anywhere near Austin and I will do it for free.

    VAG transmission reset:

Ignition on, but do not start the engine.

Press the accelerator pedal firmly to the floor and hold it there for a full 10 seconds.

    Release the pedal.

    Turn the ignition off.

There is a TCU tuning thread floating around here (I can't find it now) but it suggest the 4th to 5th shift is different (and slower) than many others because it uses every (or "the most") gear set(s) in the ZF. I am not sure if that's the same for the downshift to D5 but i expect it is. I will keep looking for the thread - it was some tuner that discovered the shift delay in the stock software.

I always read the final step was to let it sit for a couple minutes before restarting, FWIW.

I think that procedure is actually a throttle adaption, rather than changing anything the ZF8 does. I hope it works for OP's problem.

Does that reset procedure also work for the 7 speed S-Tronic? Been experiencing the rough downshift from 2 -> 1

Thought all Q5's came with the ZF8, but after picking up the new ride (2012 3.0 TDI), seems like I have a 7 speed as I can't get to the 8th gear in either D or Manual modes. Unless there's a secret option to unlock the gear

I am planning to install 034 TCU tune pretty soon on my 3.0 but am going to do the trans service before I tune as im just about to hit 70k miles. I have just been reading up about resetting the adaptation values and going through the (pita) transmission relearn process.
this might be a silly question but I want to do the reset/relearn before I install tcu tune correct? Is the tcu tune is going to reset the original adaptations upon install anyway?
why is there no process to quick learn the transmission for the tcu tune like there is for relearning the adaptations?

    thanks !

You should reset the adaptations after the oil change. The TCU tune has nothing to do with the current adaptations, it changes how the clutches engage and the rev limiter to 7200.
