Harbor Freight Modified Timing Belt Pin Wrench for 1.8T

Just wanted to share a tool I modified to work for the 1.8T that I bought from Harbor Freight. $4.99 tool. Even less with 20% or 25% coupons.

    Worked great!

I used a Dremel to shrink the diameter of the pins on the Harbor Freight tool since it was a tad big for the holes.

I then had to cut some metal off the tips of the tool to allow for the socket to be placed onto the nut while making the tensioner adjustment.

    Easy to do.

Nice. Had no idea HFT sells such a tool. Not sure if it's a new thing they added to their line-up.

I think I bought the factory tool used, but I think HFT long-nose angle pliers can also work.
    Something like this:

I wonder how hard the TB job was, and if any other special tools were required.

It definitely made it easier to set the 8mm gap.

That's all well and good but you should really be using the new Litens tensioner instead of the old style tensioner. Then there is no need to even set the 8 mm Gap.

I wanted to but the Blauparts timing set is even more expensive than the one I got from ECS.

just installed one. Using a Hepu water pump and Conti belt sourced separately; I threw away the INA belt.
ended up putting a new Duralast idler pulley ($30) and new serpentine tensioner.
That and "flushing" (drain and fill through CTS) up to like 6gal of distilled water and Prestone radiator flush ($5) to try cleaning the internals from previous lack of service and brown colored coolant

the coolant level seems to be stabilizing after a few top-offs and a bleed attempt (top bleeder screw and bleeder hole on heater core hose)

I wonder if the Litens tensioner will ever need re-adjusting

    I dig
