Official RS5 6-spd swap info thread

I’m a huge fan of our S-Tronic 7-spd rev matching, lighning fast shifting transmission. However, she ain’t cheap.
As we move forward slowly making more power in the RS5 we will inevitably start running into transmission issues. I’m not looking forward to paying AUDI insane amounts of $ when another (more interesting) alternative might be available. I think it’s time we pull together our collective info and brainstorming on what it takes to swap in a 6-spd manual transmission as an option. Parts should start becoming realistically priced and more available as older S5 manuals become wrecked IF this is the best option for the swap.

Questions that will likely pop up include:

    Gearing?
    Coding?
    Reverse light switch?
    Bell housing bolt up?
Where will the main issue lie when bolting up parts?
    What else?

Imagine having the gated R8 shifter in here.....mmmm.

Below is about the only info I found in a similarly titled thread from 4 years ago. It was basically a thread ruined by Doug.

“I'm still investigating, but as another said, a B8.5 S5 6-speed swap over should be relatively straight forward. it's basically an involved clutch job with some coding on the back end. Biggest obstacle I foresee will be installing the pedal and getting proper actuation and so forth. The CF center console can be also taken from an S5, and I'd probably swap for an R8 shift knob or something OEM looking.

My one question is: Does the S5 have a self-adjusting pressure plate“

Well we know the 6-speed will bolt up. It'll bolt up to the 4.0L TT too...It'll obviously bolt up to the S5 4.2L. Anything is possible with enough resources if the aforementioned predictions fail. A custom bell housing is entirely possible. Plenty of other platforms use custom bell housings to adapt certain transmissions to certain engines. The coding will be interesting and as quoted, routing of the third pedal and the hydraulics as well. Pretty sure the S5 master cylinder failure rate is higher than the 2013+ mechatronics but read on!

If you look at percentage failure, the mechatronic is the leading candidate. Even at dealer prices, it'll be cheaper to replace the mechatronic than swap in a 6-speed and make your RS5 slower. It is feasible to swap the mechatronics yourself, in the garage, on jack stands. Embrace the technology! Just saying after a bit of bourbon. Fearless buzz kill!

Edit: Pull back the carpeting in the footwell and see if there's a plug in there. Willing to bet the floorpan is the same between the S5 and RS5.
