As far as your question goes, the conventional wisdom is that brake-torquing as you describe is actually easier on the transmission than using launch control anyway.

Ive had the car for over 2 years and know it inside and out. From the very beginning, I have never had launch control. I even had the boys at RocEuro try it when it was there getting some work done and no dice. I never checked the count via VAGCOM (I dont have it), but the car came tuned and with an intake so I suspect the previous owner was a modder and drove it hard. The car is a 2013, I bought it October of 2016 with 37k and it now has 58k. I suspect the owner used the launches up in that 37k miles.
I know I can get it reflashed and up the launch counter, I just was looking for opinions to using this method and if it was relatively safe to do so.
