    Brake Torque vs Launch Control

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short, I bought the S6 with launch control maxed out (I believe). I have never been able to use launch control but I can load up the boost at a stop and hard on the brake. The boost bar goes about halfway or more up the digital gauge and rpms can creep up to ~2500+ rpm. It gets up and goes quite well using this method (APR tune), but truthfully how harsh is this on the trans?

The wife drives the car mostly now, so it gets babies usually, but it got me thinking on possible damage if I take it to the track or occasional street light fun.

    Any thoughts?

Are you turning off ESC? If that’s turned off, then you should be able to use launch control- I’d be impressed if the prior owner launched it 200 times (the current max). If you have a VAGCOM cable, you can check the launch counter to be sure. An APR tine can remove the max limit on launch control as well. As far as your question goes, the conventional wisdom is that brake-torquing as you describe is actually easier on the transmission than using launch control anyway.

Go to the transmission module, and select adv measures. You’ll get a drop down menu- find the counter for launch control and select it- it will then show you the number of times your car has been launched

Ive had the car for over 2 years and know it inside and out. From the very beginning, I have never had launch control. I even had the boys at RocEuro try it when it was there getting some work done and no dice. I never checked the count via VAGCOM (I dont have it), but the car came tuned and with an intake so I suspect the previous owner was a modder and drove it hard. The car is a 2013, I bought it October of 2016 with 37k and it now has 58k. I suspect the owner used the launches up in that 37k miles.

I know I can get it reflashed and up the launch counter, I just was looking for opinions to using this method and if it was relatively safe to do so.

I wouldn’t stress about potential hard use too much. Yet. First order of business should be to find out how many launches it’s had.

Brake boosting will definitely be harder on the trans.

so....consensus is that the APR tune SHOULD remove the LC limit or does it still exist at 200 launches regardless of APR tune or stock?

Only the APR TCU tune for the S-tronic in the S4/S6/S7 raises launch control limits from 200 to 3,000 launches.
