Oil leaking on top on engine

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As in photo below, my ‘10 b8 a4 fwd is having oil leaked on top of engine, around mating surface of the valve cover. Engine runs a bit rough on idle and low rpm
I did have a failed pcv valve earlier that caused low oil pressure.
I’m thinking my valve cover seal/gasket blown. What do you think?
    TIA

it Is very unusual for oil to leak "up" from the gasket into those areas . I would suggest cleaning it all with brake clean and watching carefully. redoing the seal on these cars is a bit of a job as you might know as that top "cover" is the upper cradle and holding the cams down.
it could be leaking past one of the protrusions for the top plastic cover to lock on to . its a simple o ring in there. .. so clean it up and watch.

a PCV valve will not cause increased or decreased oil pressure .. but it will cause increased crankcase pressure ( depending how it fails ) which could blow seals , so your concern is valid ...

Also I really like how clean your engine is .. if you wouldn't mind could you take a pic of directly above your PCV valve ? I replaced mian and I had 9 long bolts with a shoulder and a shorter one with no shoulder. I think I may have mixed the bolt up with the one that holds down the coil pack harness... but I'm just not sure. I was hoping a pic of yours might help.

    Thanks

Oil leaking on top on engine

It’s weird how there’s oil on the top of the valve cover which was a bit different in my case. My valve cover was leaking and was told by the shop that it is common, now mine wasn’t as bad as yours but Im very cautious about things like that so I had it resealed by a very good reputable shop. Here’s a pic of the new sealant they use, it doesn’t use a gasket but some type of silicone. I’d get it resealed before the oil corrodes the plastic water pump.

It almost looks like the cam sensor is leaking possibly bad o-ring? Undo the connector for it see if there’s oil in the terminals if so I’d replace the sensor

I had this problem in the exact same place about 6 months ago. Mine was leaking from the black cover in the bottom pic. I think it covers the chain if not mistaken. At any rate, I decided to just apply high temp gasket sealer along the right edge up to about mid-way. Using your finger you can make it unnoticeable. And.. that did stop the leaking in my case. The gasket was just wearing out so I did a patch job to give it a little extra life.

I'd love to know what green sealant they used, never seen one that color before.

It's the 'Anaerobic Silicone sealant' D154103A.
It cures in the absence of oxygen so it will form a seal inbetween the metal of the housings. Some have noted that it doesn't appear to cure where it is pressed out from oxygen. I don't think any extra curing techniques are needed on the sealant that's pressed out but I'm sure there are some creative ways to get it to harden if you're worried about it.

It's expensive from most shops, but there are alternatives like Permatex and even on ebay.

I read great things about this Toyota sealant which is a lot cheaper than Audi's.
I haven't tried it yet but going to use it on oil sump job for my BMW E46.

This! I had oil in the same locations as well and it was coming from my upper timing chain cover (black cover in the pic). Yours appears to be dry in th pic but maybe we can’t see it in the pic.

    I replaced all theee orings/seals:

    1. Upper timing Chain cover gasket
    2. Cam sensor seal
    3. Inner cam sensor oring (this one is important)

Replacing all three of these seals is a relatively simple job. Good luck!

Hi mate, can you tell me which sealer you used and if you have any pictures of where you applied it
