    resonated vs non resonated

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have owned my Audi S5 for a couple years now. I have decided to modify it a little more. You can see the current additions in my signature. I have looked at catback exhaust for mine. I don't understand the terminology when it says resonated down pipes versus non resonated down pipes. If some one could explain it. I would be grateful!

I believe it comes down to drone when paired with a complete exhaust.
I have only down pipes (oem exhaust), and without the resonators theres no drone. Draw back, not as loud overall and a tad raspy at WOT.

Having just installed a set of resonated AWE downpipes I would say that resonated downpipes are all about cabin comfort!! I had a really bad drone at cruising speeds, mainly at 2K rpm but the sound of the exhaust with the AWE catback and OEM downpipes was down right mean. The resonated downpipes have tamed the beast, it still sounds great and it’s still crazy loud at WOT but overall daily driving matches what the stock exhaust puts out with a slight more growl. Non resonated downpipes would keep the sound of the exhaust louder than stock all the time.

So you had drone with the Awe + stock DP’s and no drone with AWE + aftermarket resonated DP’s?

I got the full AWE system, resonated downpipes and catback....figured they’ve done all the research and I didn’t want to mix and match parts from different vendors. The initial set up was stock downpipes and AWE catback, that’s a really good system in itself but the drone at 2k rpm regardless of speed was a bit too much for me. Now with AWE resonated downpipes, there’s virtually no drone but I will say the system has quiet down considerably, still loud when I want it to but tame when cruising. I’ll upload some video clips when I get a chance to show the difference.

Wonder what the difference is between the stock and AWE resonated pipes.

The IE non res DP’s are quieter than their videos. Im enjoying em so far. Turns heads ripping down the streets lol

Thanks for answering my question. I am still learning all the terminology and such. I have been looking at different catback systems. AWE is definitely on my list along with the Corsa. I read your post and that gave me a further definition when speaking about the down pipes. Thanks again!!

In the end the resonated DP will cancel more drone or noise than the stock DPs when paired with an AWE TRACK...the touring obviously will be quieter...

Reasonators are a physical feature on the exhaust that, like others have said, reduce drone and volume. I believe they can be fairly “easily” (said by someone who pays experts to do the wrenching) removed from most systems so...if you were not sure how loud you wanted to go, you can go resonated and remove them later if you want to ‘dial it up’. I recently went with the JHM/FI exhaust and went resonated given I live in a quiet neighborhood, etc. — definitely the right choice for me...

Resonated=Resonators built in that act like an echo chamber.

Non-resonated=no resonators with straight through exhaust

Resonated exhausts come with mufflers, where as non res do not.

Also there is valvesonic/valvetronic which add a valve in the exhaust to open it up.

I don't know how to put this nicely without sounding like an ass, but this is so far from being correct. Whether a resonator is present or not in an exhaust system, a muffler is still required by law for road use. Even if you look at aftermarket systems, ones that are intended for road use will still have mufflers. Even the AWE track exhaust catback has a muffler, but it has no resonator.

Not so far from the truth. Sorry should have clarified most non resonated exhausts do not come with rear mufflers. And yes you are still semi correct.

2018 AWE track exhaust must be different than their previous editions. B8.5 track edition still had a muffler. From the catback, instead of 1 center resonator and 2 mufflers, they removed the resonator and put a single muffler where the center resonator on the OEM exhaust sat.

So if one was to purchase a catback exhaust (AWE Touring) with a resonated downpipe to control any drone, are there still any performance gains, or does it become simply a cosmetic mod? Do the resonators reduce exhaust flow and lower power output?

You will definitely get a slight bump in performance. The flow is a lot better on the upgraded AWE exhaust and they upgrade the tubing to 2.5” vs the stock 2.25”. Stock mufflers and exhaust are restrictive. AWE catback with resonated downpipes will sound amazing and flow much better!

On the B8.5 platform, it would be just a slight bump as S5_SID already said. It would be such a little jump that you would likely only ever see a difference on the dyno and may not even feel it at all when driving the car, except for a placebo effect. Exhaust flow isn't as critical on a supercharged platform as it is on a turbo platform. I haven't seen the numbers yet, but I imagine the B9 platform sees much nicer gains from exhaust upgrades.

    +1

The gain on the cat backs are only 8+ hp at the crank.
