Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Does anyone have experience blacking out chrome? Id like to do it to my 15 SQ5 and would appreciate some tips. Is plasti-dip the way the way to go?
    Thanx

That's an option to dip it, or you could pick out a vinyl wrap color you like (gloss, matte, etc.) And either DIY or take it to a shop that specializes in that sort of work.

They have all the tools you'll need to wrap the chrome pieces.

I did plasti dip on my camry. You will need 6 or more coats. The vinyl on the car was not super paint friendly. However, it did turn out well after the coats. Also, inexpensive compared to other options. FWIW

Vinyl wrap seems more sturdy than spraying on the plastic...

In my experience much easier to remove as well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M09GT92/ this is what I used. I have done Lamin-X several times so I had some squeegees and razor blades around. Take your time and don't try to stretch it too much as in cold weather it will shrink a bit. Took me a few hours to do everything on mine and while not perfect unless you are looking for flaws you won't find them.

I got some vinyl wrap from ECS as well as the tool kit and will attempt in install it myself to black out the chrome around the windows. If that goes well, I'll find Monsoon Grey Vinyl so I can get rid of the rest of the chrome on the Q5.

You can black out your exhaust tips for free just by driving! Better than trying to keep them shiny, which is futile.

I know you are probably talking about chrome trim, but I'm serious about the exhaust tips turning black no matter what you do.

If you live in ny, check out nycwheelprofessionals on ig. They can de chrome your car for under 300 I think. They are in Brooklyn. They fix and powdercoat. They painted my calipers and painted my wheels few times.

Why you have to pay? Don’t you just park the car overnight in Brooklyn and it will be de chromed for free?

    Sorry could not resist,

I'm going the vinyl wrap route. I ordered my 3m Gloss Black 1080 vinyl from Amazon

There is a bit of a learning curve with this stuff, but I'm pleased with the results so far. Still trying to figure out how to attack the roof rails though.

I'll soon be in the same boat as you. Not too shabby. There are quite few videos on YouTube for this as well, that's where my learning is from thus far. And then trial by error. Good luck.

If you gonna spray try superwrap. I just got this wheel kit for my 20s but will use some for the chrome trim around the doors. Haven't used it yet but seems to be same as plastidip but higher quality.can get on amazon or from them directly MVIMG_20181231_194544.jpegMVIMG_20181231_194608.jpeg

Roof rails scared me a bit too but actually ended up being pretty easy, just take your time to work it up into the corners, make sure to leave enough excess to be able to have something to hang on to when stretching.

I just did my chrome trim and rims today. Not as good as a professional wrap job but good enough for me and the kit cost $99 on amazon. Rims and trim! Hope it holds up. I've never done a spray-type or plasti-dip, but from what I've seen from many different vehicles over the years is that this stuff doesn't hold up well after a year or two

For plastidip emblems (3 red in rear) $6 can will last longer than I'll have car. The superwrap on rims and trim is TBD.
