Is there a way to keep the MMI screen up all of the time?

Just curious if there is a way to disable the screen from retracting upon shutdown, where the MMI screen stays up all of the time?

I read a thread here(?) or somewhere about an individual who accomplished this with a small switch in line with the motor power for the screen. It runs in the passenger side footwell and he put a switch at floor level that cuts the power and the screen stays stuck open. I believe you'd get some sort of fault stored but seems like a simple solution.

I wish we could get that switch into one of the blank buttons below the disc slot. I like being able to hide the screen but having it open and close every start/stop is unnecessary for sure, and one more 'non performance' item to repair when it reaches its duty cycle limit.

There is a seperate connector for the motor for the screen. Unplugging it while its up should do the trick i suppose.

Did you ever find a way to do this? I picked up a 2015 A6 last weekend and the screen retracting every time I shut the car off feels like unnecessary wear and something that'll eventually cost me money to fix lol.

Pretty positive there is no way via VCDS or any other conventional way to keep the screen up. Obviously there looks to be some fixes/hacks to make it stay up. While premature wear is a minor, legitimate concern...... why not let it retract into the dash? I think it's one of the nice/classy features of the car.

It's a cool feature. And I'd be comfortable if I knew it would never fail. But it retracting doesn't seem necessary and may cause premature wear. Same reason I turned off the auto folding mirrors. That said, I'd rather not back into the stock wiring. Thought I'd shut it off if there was an easy option, but there doesn't seem to be one that's OEM.

Ba ha ha ha… If you want it to work for years to come, you shouda' bought a Toyota/Lexus.

I'm as loyal as any Audi owner, hell I currently own 5 now! While I will admit they are so much better than those I owned between 1985-1998 (4 cars) But, we own an 2008 Lexus 400h and as of today nothing but scheduled mantanience, and few wear items. Everything still works. It blows me away every time I think about it, or when my wife says "Maybe you shoulda' bought a Lexus, like me...

Lol I actually considered a 2015 Lexus IS350 until I drove one. I am willing to trade off some reliability and maintenance cost for driver feel and performance. I was looking at S4's, but we're expecting our first little one this fall so thought the A6 may offer some more usable room.

As for the screen, it would just be nice to limit unnecessary wear, as I would be fine with it staying up at all times. Seems odd not to have the option. Oh well.

Lexus’s fold like tin cans. If you have a child you should stick with the German cars.

I also don’t see why you wouldn’t want the screen to fold down. All though expensive when having to be replaced I think it makes the cabin super super modern. I love it. It feels like a space ship when you first start the car and the mirrors fold down and the screen pops up

The screen in my '14 A6 doesn't sound that great when it retracts or extends. It's pretty noisy. I can see why someone wouldn't want it to retract every single time.

New owner here and a bit disappointed that’s there’s no way(official or not) to keep the screen up all the time.

At least for most cases it’s only 1 time up and down for each drive but if your doing many stops or just turning on and off the radio while waiting you need to operate it.

The only other way is to turn off the radio manually before shutting off the car so that when it restarts the screen doesn’t pop up back. Good if you know your going on a short distance and don’t need the screen for that drive.

I think the interior looks good with the screen up too. And I'm not sitting in the car while it's off, so I rarely see the interior with the screen down anyway. I just don't see a lot of benefit, and would like to have the option. Oh well, at least I have the option to turn off the auto folding mirrors.

It always amazes me when people get into my car for the first time and see the screen rise out of the dash. For anyone that hasn't been in a true luxury car before the screen retracting feature seems to blow their mind (LOL). It's perhaps one of the coolest and most "exotic" feature of what is a rather serious and very german car. I can understand why you wouldn't want any unnecessary wear, but the wear is so minimal that (for the pure amusement factor) I wouldn't really worry about it. That being said, I actually had the dealer replace my MMI motor recently because it was not opening smoothly. Although it was only a few hundred dollars in parts and labor (at an Audi dealer), it is an annoying cost to have. However, it was my choice to replace the motor, as the screen still opened fine (at 70k miles and 5 or so years) just not very quietly or smoothly.

The noise is normal. As I said above I just had mine replaced and it makes some noticeable noise when opening. Nothing particularly loud, just the electric motor doing its job.

The flip out screen is still soo much better than the current range of stuck on tablet look appearing across most premium brands now.

Glad to know yours was still operating at 70k. Mine only has 57k km so I'd hope I'll sell it long before any issues arise. I'll likely keep it for about 3 years or so.I've only had it a week but really enjoying it so far. Just bigger than I'm used to.

Good to know! Honestly, part of it is probably this being my first German car, and the maintenance and reliability concerns that come with it. I've had almost all Japanese previously and they've all been trouble free. My first two were domestic, I'll never do that again lol.

I have no idea if this is true, but I'm wondering if there is a fuse for the motor that could be pulled when in the up position. I'm basing this idea on my old 05 Lexus LS430 that had a small fuse on the second panel that controlled the auto up and retracting steering wheel ("easy exit"). It was, of course still working, but making a lot of motor noise so I pulled the fuse and never though about it again. Interesting that several of us have or have had Lexus vehicles. I agree, they are incredibly reliable but also very boring. I only miss the oscillating vents and the ventilated seats, but not as much as I feared and that is quickly overcome by a dab of the skinny pedal.

In an Audi I’m pretty sure the screen would just flip out and go black. I don’t think it’d stay open and work.

I really like the Lexus LX. That’s the only Lexus that’d I buy lol. I’m sure it’s just as Boring as the others but at least it looks nice haha

My A6 has the ventilated seats and heated steering wheel. Those were a big reason why I went this route over an S4. I do miss having a manual transmission though.
