    Audi A5 vs Audi S5

    Hi folks,

I used to own A5 2013 2.0T AT (modified a bit: ~310HP, cat-back + downpipe) and I just moved to CA, so I'm looking into buying A5 or S5 CPO from 2018. My "problem" is that I don't want to downgrade to A5 with 252HP, but on the other hand S5 is quite expensive. My non-negotiable requirement is that A5/S5 needs to be equipped with B&O.

I've tested both A5 and S5 and I haven't made up my mind yet.

I was thinking about buying A5 and doing a few modifications:
    - chip tuning or external race chip - I looked up a few options and it seems that it may add up to 40-50HP
    - cat-back + downpipe - I'm concerned here about voiding CPO warranty and I've heard that some exhaust modifications are not legal in CA.
    - ceramic coating
    - black optics package (buying or

What's your experience with following modifications? I remember that in my A5 from 2013 stocks break where not enough for >300HP.

I suspect that there might have been a lot of folks here with similar concerns, so I will be happy to listen your advices.

    Thanks!

Revo has a performance pack for the 2.0T. I'd look on their website for more specifics. Very good company.

Is the CPO warranty valid with the modifications you are suggesting?

No anytime you modify the ECU it voids the warranty.

Yeah, I've already seen theirs ad in this subform and visited the website - upgrade option seems promising.

    1. What about stock breaks in A5? are they good?
    2. Is there anyone here who did exhaust modifications in California?

it makes little sense to purchase the cheaper car, then immediately mod it to be closer to the expensive one. Just get the slightly more expensive one (after you factor in the additional cost of your mods) and be done with it. No wrenching on your car (where bad shit can happen), full warranty support, and it will look and drive better. Its a no-brainer.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of. That I will spend a lot of money for modifications that I would have been better off buying S5 in the first place.

The mods you are considering will very likely void the CPO warranty so...no point in getting a warranty with A5, voiding when modding, etc. If you are unsure about jumping right into pay-to-play, I’d go S5, not mod while under warranty and enjoy the default performance, then mod once out of warranty.

As to exhaust in CA, there are two aspects to worry about - you can’t mess with the cats (so you are looking for a cat-back system) and there are sound limits (don’t remember the decibel limit but there is one). You can find CA legal solutions. That said, you need to know ahead of time if the exhaust will cause warranty issues — I went with JHM which I believe will throw fault codes unless you are running the JHM tune, which of course would likely be flagged by dealer and bye bye warranty...

From my experience, go with the car you really want as opposed to modding to make it the car you want.

For me, I went with a B8.5 S4 and, while I loved the car, I wanted more (should have gone RS5). I modded my S4 and it was fun, but caused me issues and I regretted not going with the car I wanted from the start.
