    2018 RS5 How do I get G-Meter to display?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I cannot figure out how to get the G-Meter to display? I just have the non-plus Dynamic Pkg, so I'm not sure if this is only available in cars equipped with Dynamic Plus.

It also blows my mind that Audi would limit my model to 155 MPH and further not enable tire pressures/temperatures to be displayed. Seems in a car at this prices level and being an RS model that should be a given.

If I recall correctly, you have to press the [ button on the steering wheel and then select sport displays and select the G-meter. I find the VC not very intuitive when it comes to configuring what you wanna see on the right side. If you have navigation active then the right side is taken over by the turn-by-turn instructions and as far as I know you can't show the G-meter. I'm not sure if it can be displayed on the left side instead.

As for the top speed, in most markets top speeds above 155 mph are an extra cost option. Sometimes they are tied to a package, other times you have to hand over some green just for them to increase the top speed and nothing else. With BMW for example you have to get the M Driver's package, which includes driver training. I guess they don't trust their customers to handle the higher top speed. Audi USA used to just include the higher speed limit in the base configuration. The B8.5 RS5 came standard with the 174 mph top speed limit, but now it's tied to the Dynamic Plus package. Perhaps Audi is admitting that the standard brakes are not up to the task of hauling down the car safely from speeds above 155 mph and they make you get the CCBs if you want the higher top speed.

This is not the main reason, but one of the reason I passed on the RS5 and am going with the '19 C63 S. Comes standard with a top speed of 180 mph. It might seem silly, but I'm doing European Delivery, so having that higher top speed is part of the experience.

Thanks, my navigation is enabled, and maybe that is why there is no sport display option when you press [. I just wish there was some clear info provided on this feature.

When I purchased an M5 back in 2000, it included a driver ed event in Spartanburg which was done in a first class manner. BMW provided hotel, dinner, gifts and some decent training. I wish Audi did that as well. I was interested in a C63S, but there were none available in m area until next year. Nevertheless, I am happy with the RS5 as its a decent lux GT car which I most likely will not track, although I had been wondering about attending a 1/2 mile event for kicks.

It's available and under Sport Displays. Hit the button left of the scrolling wheel, underneath the arrows that switch between radio, phone, nav. The tire pressures/temps are not available with the non-plus package. You can swap the g-meter on the left or right side but selecting the button right of the scrolling wheel and selecting "Additional Displays"

I do not see anything that says sports displays when I hit the [ button to the left of the scrolling wheel and that is what has me confused. Does the car have to be in dynamic or sport mode for the sports options to show up?

Yeah, Audi Sport is the only one of the big three German performance brands that doesn't offer this. At least not as part of the purchase of the car. They do offer extra cost driving experience events. It is/was called the Audi Forum and they used to be here at the Sonoma Racetrack, but now are at Circuit of the Americas. BMW has the Driver's Package and every AMG includes a one day AMG Driving Academy event as part of the purchase. M and AMG are much more focused on their performance brands and try to excite their customer base, IMO.

That's odd, I suppose you can't get the power and torque meters either.

Maybe the dealer can enable it?

I have not yet visited COTA, so this might be a fun event in the Spring.

Don't feel bad DFWRS5. I just got my RS5 in September and I still cannot work 90% of the Digital Display and other features. I went to AudiUSA for some tutorials and you may have to check the S5 tutorials as there aren't many for the RS5. YouTube has better tutorials The Navigation is TOTALLY UNUSER FRIENDLY! The Digital Display is not my thing, I guess I am too old. I like my wife's S4 analogue better. I finally figured out how to find the Classic Display set up with Tach and Speedometer?!?! after weeks of looking. I finally had to go onto YouTube for most of the tutorials. The Dealer Sales rep kept saying "Just like your wife's S4" and NO it is not like her 2014, Prestige package, analogue instruments S4!!! I still have not used 60% of features on my wife's S4. The RS5 I bought for it's performance. I wish Audi would offer a more basic package. Honestly, with an MSRP of $84.760, I am glad it has all kinds of info display options, but when are you going to use them. If I am pedal to the medal I need to look in front of me to make sure I don't hit anything. I also don't like they slow shift in M-mode. It redlines before it upshifts and the dumb fuel cut off stalls the acceleration. I would rather have it shift for you like my wife's 2014 S4 if you don't shift fast enough, instead of rev limiter/fuel cutoff. The RS5 instead has the Rev limiter/fuel cutoff which slows down the car! I personally don't like that feature

It does have more tech than I can easily absorb. I am old so that makes me a slow learner on many of these features. I am still breaking the car in, so have not really played around with paddle shifting, but I do like the way it shifts in auto dynamic mode. It's certainly much faster than I could shift a manual gearbox. If they can ever crack the engine and transmission CUs, a tune might be able to fix some of issues you pointed out.

This is what's commonly referred to as a true manual mode and is rather desired in high performance cars. In the current gen, it's only supposed to be active in Dynamic/Sport manual mode. If the transmission is in comfort/auto/D before you activate manual mode it's supposed to upshift automatically at redline. But in the true manual mode, it's like a manual transmission car. If you don't shift in time you run into the rev limiter. Allows winding out the engine to the last possible moment before shifting, instead of the transmission computer interfering and shifting slight early. Problem is with the B9 RS5, the transmission kinda sucks for performance driving. It's too slow to shift precisely. In my '13 RS5 it's a joy to ring out the engine all the way to redline and shift at the last moment. Transmission shifts in 50 ms, so you don't have to pull the paddle slightly early to make sure it shifts before bumping into the redline, instead it shifts the moment the paddle is pulled.

superswiss, You are describing exactly what I have been trying to do. Get the RS5 right up to the Redline and shift at the last moment. It is not possible in my 2018 RS5. I grew up driving manual and drove manual transmissions for 30 years and was used to shifting this way. I did not know that if I left it in Comfort/Auto/D it will shift for me at redline. My wife's 2014 S4 will do this in comfort or Dynamic. it does not have Sport mode. When I first put the S4 to the limits I would shift right at redline and sometimes the computer would then shift again. I got used to it and in a straight line acceleration, I would just put the gas pedal to the floor and let the transmission do the rest. However the RS5 needing to be in Comfort/Auto/D somewhat defeats the purpose because I usually have it in Dynamic because some nimrod who knows nothing about cars driving his Guilia or M4 is trying to harass me and I have to give him a quick lesson on the RS5 heritage!

As I mentioned in the second part of my post, the transmission is too slow to shift at the very last moment. It takes about 200 ms to shift, so you have to pull the paddle slightly early. 200 ms may not sound like much, but it's 4 times slower than the DSG and is a perceptual fraction of a second. If you pull the paddle too late you will run into the rev limiter before the 200 ms are over and the transmission has actually done the shift. You should see the shift light on the tachometer go green, then orange and then start flashing red. The moment it starts flashing red you need to shift
