    Brake Caliper covers

Anyone have experience with caliper covers? The 20" Black Optic Plus wheels have a lot of open space, and was thinking these might add just a small bit of pop, especially with my dark car. Looking at theses:

Pass. In my opinion the only people who notice brakes are the same people who know how to spot a fake BBK.

With a dark car and a lot of empty space in my wheels, these would likely stand out well enough for me. Just wondering if anyone has used this type of product and what their experience with them was.

These look like a great addition as painting the calipers is a bit of a PITA!! I tried to paint my front ones this weekend and it was a disaster. I did see in the post that the S5 is not mentioned as one of the models this fits into, kind of silly as the sticker is for an S5.

But they also keep your wheels a lot cleaner. Less dust, not bad imo.

To me it seems like caliper covers would really mess with a critical process; Heat dissipation.

Continually piling the spent brake dust onto the caliper and baking it in. Heat soaked and fading early and often, you will likely be speeding up the need to replace them.

I paid about $400 to have mine painted at the local collision shop. They even put white "S5" logos on them to help them look OEM. Money well spent IMO.

Hey just a suggestion if you want a little standout without a "ricer" cover or a paint/powerder coat job. I took off the logo plate, painted it red, ebay S5 decal and clear coat. It stands out without being too flashy

This is what I am most likely going to do, the covers look nice but a good paint job or powder coat is the best way to go. I tried to paint mine this past weekend but it’s not as easy as it looks.

What type of paint did you use? Any special prep before painting other than a good cleaning? How long ago was this done and how is the paint holding up?

I highly recommend G2 Brake Caliper paint. Very durable. Can pick standard colors or get a custom mixed color.

Would you stick a Rolex badge to a Casio G Shock and expect people not to notice, that would be my specific reason not to do this. A nice paint job will look classy, covers will look fake.

Pull them off and powder coat them to look however you want. It is the longest lasting option. These were boring grey when they started life:

Covers look cheap and you drive an Audi. There are few exceptions where the cheap option is an option for European luxury/sports cars. Brake caliper covers may be one of the worst imo. But your car, do you. My brakes look like poop and need replacing anyway. I'd like to upgrade all hardware by summer. I've got time to save the dough.

I just used a ceramic high temp engine enamel for mine. Just took apart and sanded and cleaned good. Few coats, with a few mins between coats. Its holding up well. Few chips from hitting thing off em, but overall not bad for like $10 and a little time.

Having never seen covers on any vehicle, I was looking for opinions, so thank you for this. I was also trying to avoid having to take the calipers off to paint them and then bleed the system, especially since I'm coming up on my 25k service and the fluid will be flushed then, but seems painting them is the best option.

You can, but much easier ta do a good job with them off. And not hard to bleed after. Ya won't have air in the system, just in the calipers. So mot hard ta get out. Just use something to plug the lines when ya remove them.

When I painted mine with G2 I unbolted the calipers and suspended them from the upper control arms with with some bailing wire. You can get really good access without having to disconnect the brake line. Keep in mind that the G2 is a 2 part catalyzed urethane paint that gets applied with a brush.

Yeah, either way. I just found it esier with them off the car. Instead of crouching in the wheel well, bad back, lol. Plus I spent some time sanding and cleaning. And now I rem I was installing SS lines at the same time, so already was disconnecting lines.

One kit was more than enough. Once you mix it you have to use it all within several hours since it is a catalyzed paint. I would suggest only mixing 1/2 of the materials and see if you have enough to do all four. If so, you will have some back up paint for later if required

After I painted mine I applied some Audi rings and then sealed the rings with some high gloss clear ceramic engine enamel. Not the best pic but you get the idea.
