Looking to possibly buy an Allroad - talk me into/or out of it

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As stated, Looking to get an Allroad 2013-2018 or an S6 2013-2018

From poking around in here it seems as there are some issues with this platform
    1) Timing chain tensioner failure
    2) Oil consumption
    3) had a buddy with the steering issue - Audi took care of that but was like pulling teeth to get it fixed.

I am currently in an S3 stage 2+ and need more room for growing family and hauling stuff. The MQB platform is almost bulletproof and I've had no issues with the car..wondering the same with the A4 / Allroad ?

    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...rey-CF-UM-STG2

What should I look for when purchasing?
Any recalls or TSB to check to see if warranty work was done along with major service?
Are these reliable enough to go stage 1 and lightly tune and how reliable is it?
Want to do coilovers or possibly bag it because the just looks bad ass on the ground.

What are the top 5 mods that you would to make the car "better" handling or "performance"? Who has the best ECU and TCU tune for this platform?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't go with a B9 (2017+)...general rule with vehicles is don't be the owner of a new chassis/generation and you won't be the platform guinea pig. I can't stand the B9 "ipad" dash, its tacky and a lazy design fad that seems to be going all around.

Closer to 2016 you can get will be the most reliable. IMO its worth waiting and finding a fully loaded Allroad - Sport package /w MMI, B&O etc. I've been very happy with mine so far.

Can’t go wrong with a 13-16 Allroad. I love driving mine. Keep in mind that the front/rear seating is the same as a sedan so you aren’t really gaining any substantial passenger space with the Allroad. But you to gain HUGE with the rear cargo area.
My A4 sedan guzzled oil but my Allroad doesn’t. Only TSB is the ongoing rear heater pump thingy. Quattro is awesome over FWD. Definitely get the sport PP package with BO sound system if possible.
A lot of guys run tunes. I don’t as I’m happy with mine on e85 as it is. This is an older platform now so there is a ton of aftermarket parts you can throw at it. I highly recommend getting a rear sway bar like the 034 one. Makes a huge difference.
    Good luck.

Get an S6. Either way you look at it, the Allroad still has a weak 2.0T. You'll be VERY disappointed in the Allroad after driving a stage 2 S3. A stage 2 A4 is still pretty weak. The S6 is still big enough to haul things with, but it won't have the same trunk space as the Allroad.

If you purely want space and don't care about power, get the Allroad.

If you don't mind less trunk space than the Allroad, but care about everything else, get the S6.

The Allroad is a great car, they didn't suffer from widespread oil consumption or timing chain issues like the 2009-2012 2.0Ts and the notchy steering issue was mostly isolated to 2013 model year cars afaik, and Audi fixed most of them too. You also can't beat the practicality of an Avant!

However, if an S6 with reasonable miles was an option, I would probably go that route as the S6 is a step above the Allroad in terms of performance and luxury.

What about an SQ5? Lowered they look good and the 3.0 performs well.

If those were my options I'd get an S6 10 times out of 10. Just make sure the DSG has been serviced, and be aware that tuning that 4.0T DSG will have a negative effect on the DSG lifespan. Having driven an S7 several times though I don't think you'd need to tune it.

Is no one mentioning the fact that the Early model S6 has turbo issues? Also the Allroad and S6 are completely different price ranges

    Thanks for the feedback

Are there any other quirks or WTF items I should look for? I am looking at Premium Plus or Prestige models only with low miles.

    1) I can't do an SUV SQ5 or the likes..not my style
    2) Allroad vs S6 price range is only about $10K difference - no big deal
    3) I would lightly tune the Allroad..not go crazy with it. It has limited potential vs S6 if bought stock would go stage 1

You'd need a crap load of mods to get even marginally close to a stock S6. A stage 1 S6 and you'd never look back.

Do not buy used without a warranty. Even if maintenance records are meticulous. The costs for repairs and the many parts that can go wrong are not good, plus bad workshops are plentiful, adding to the issues. Don't be fooled by low mileage, either. That can mean, depending on year, that the well-known stuff that will fail is still ahead of you and not worked out in the first few miles.

Even the newer ones have issues with turbos blowing.

I love the room of the wagons and visit Camp_allroad often.

Just wondering more about performance and what to do about going from 425hp to about 280hp with stg1/2 in the Allroad?

    ugh!?

Get yourself an Allroad, you won’t regret it. And, you can still make it quick. There are pleanty of K04 examples out there: allroadcorbin, sedan_guy, earhythmic, turbavanttro to name a few. Bag it and tag it. Join the dadwagon movement.

YES YES...Love the look of a bagged Allroad. Been doing research on upgrades like turbos tunes intercoolers intakes etc. to see what the options are.

The B8.5 allroad is a real beauty. The oil consumption isn't an issue for that generation though. 2013 and up is good to go.

But I hear the S6 is an absolute dream to drive. Never driven one myself so I can't say anything about it that holds any weight to it.

There's nothing like owning a wagon though.
I agree with what the first few posts said, go with a prestige one if possible.
