    Thumbs up Integrated Engineering IE Stage 1 91oct ECU & TCU Tune Review - 2016 S3 8V

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello Everyone!

My name is Michael and I own a 2016 Audi S3 8V. Today I wanted to post a little review of a product pairing that I feel the community seriously NEEDS to look into... Integrated Engineering's 91oct Stage 1 ECU and TCU tunes! Let's start off with explaining the reason for me using 91octane versus 93octane. I live in Colorado, and that's the best we have, end of explanation .

I've owned my vehicle for a few months now and have enjoyed it a ton since day one. Everything from the daily comfort, to power, to handling on both the street and the track has been great... But I knew it could get better from here. If I had to complain about one thing from the factory, it was whenever I found myself driving around in "D" I felt the car would rush to 6th gear as fast as possible, and it often forced me into using "M" mode damn near all the time so I could choose exactly when I wanted my upshifts and downshifts to take place. Yes, that's a first world problem lol but hey, we all get lazy sometimes and just want to let the DSG do the work, right?

Now, I'm not a new comer to Integrated Engineering. I've utilized their tuning, and in most cases hardware too, on my 2013 VW Mk6 Golf R (Stage 2+PRO), my 2017 Mk7 GTi (beta testing Stage 2), my mother's 2016 Audi Q3 (Stage 1), and more recently my father's 2016 Audi S3 (Stage 1 just like my own S3)... So I knew exactly what I was getting into here. IE is a name you can absolutely trust, and it's a name you KNOW you'll be getting your dollar's worth when it comes to performance, reliability, and overall fun. I was extremely excited to get to test out their S3 software! Now on to the fun part...

So the way this all starts is you place your order with IE to have a OBD Dongle shipped out to you, and they add "credits" to your account for use on their server to purchase the tune file at the time of the flash process. All of their tunes are stored on their server. So once your cable shows up, to start, you hop inside of your car with a laptop in your driveway or garage. That's right, you don't need to drive to a shop to have your car flashed! You plug in the OBD Dongle, download the IE Wizard Flash Software, connect in to your car (with key in ON position), register your VIN to the cable, select the tune you want to flash, purchase it with the credits on your account, and hit the FLASH button! Now you wait roughly 30 minutes for the flash to upload to your ECU, and in my case the TCU only took about 5 minutes. You'll hear lots of error chimes and see lots of fault codes pop up on the dash, IT'S TOTALLY NORMAL FOR IT TO DO THIS. Once the flash is 100% uploaded, the IE Wizard screen will display a message confirming it is complete. Turn your car to the OFF position, open your door (to turn everything completely off), then shut your door, and restart your vehicle. I found that if I didn't do the whole open and close door thing before restarting the car, it would give me a CEL that'd end up going away the next time I started the car up. Again, this is completely normal, so don't panic if it happens to you.

It took me all of 5 seconds to realize how much better my S3 drove with their ECU and TCU combo! Just pulling away from my house, I noticed how much smoother the DSG was shifting and how much more efficient the modified shift points were. From a stop, the car engages 1st gear much quicker than it did on the stock TCU tune, which feels SO much smoother and more natural. Also, no more rushing to 6th gear in "D" mode! The car happily drives around town now at 2k~ rpms instead of sub 1500rpms like stock. Also you'll notice with the IE TCU tune, the shift speeds are incredibly fast. If you think in stock form your DSG shifts quickly, just wait until you see it with IE's TCU tune! IE also activates two really cool little features on the MFD display. One being in "D" and "S" modes, you now have the gear number indicator active, so you'll know what gear you're in at all times. Second, in "M" mode there will be a green up arrow for suggestive upshift points. Now I could go on for days about how much of a difference the TCU alone made to the car, but I'm too excited to talk about the ECU portion of this review, so let's get to it . At first WOT in 3rd gear, I couldn't help but yell, "HOLY $H!T!!!" "THIS CAR RIPS NOW!!!". Seriously, the IE Stage 1 91octane tune produces 359hp & 377tq... and tonssssss of evil grins! I have driven a APR Stage 2 S3, and my IE Stage 1 car actually feels faster! It all happens very smoothly too. At no point do I feel any kinds of weird twitchiness, delays, stutters, or power loss in the rev band like other tunes I've driven. You mash the pedal from 3k rpms to 7k rpms and the power just keeps on comin'! If you aren't satisfied with your current stage 1 or stage 2 tune, I would highly suggest you give Integrated Engineering a shout and give it a shot! Let them know I sent you

I can't even begin to express how happy I am with this IE Stage 1 ECU and TCU combo... I'm very excited to be trying out the Stage 2 setup in a few weeks! Stage 2 is rated at 399hp and 426tq!

If any of the Audizine members on here are located in Colorado, feel free to hit me up if you want to go for a spin! I'd love to show everyone what this is like! I plan on attending at least 6-8 open lapping days in 2019 as well, so there will be TONS of hard on track testing of IE's software and their hardware. I'll be sure to report back to you all! But so far, it's incredibly, and I couldn't be any happier of a customer!

Feel free to keep a eye out for in-car videos of my testing via my YouTube channel, ElevatedSpeed:

    Hey Michael,

Fellow Misano Red owner here. I also live in the Denver metro area.
Your car is gorgeous! Thanks for the review and information.
I'm glad you are seeing good results from the tune files from IE; they have an excellent reputation.

Maybe I'll see you at HPR this coming spring.
I really like this car, and with certain modifications, it is even more fun to drive.

Beautiful car. I would have gone with IE if it was available when I purchased my tune.

I'm in southern California and I only have 91 octane as well. I'll occasionally add 2.5-3 gal of e85 into the mix and my stage 2 s3 LOVES it. It's amazing what a difference it makes.

Do you have an upgraded dog bone mount?

I have the IE stage 1 93 octane tune and TCU tune. In drive mode, when getting on it a bit hard, I notice the shifting is very harsh and a bit clunky. I'm wondering if this is because of the billet dog bone mount setup I have (from 034) or if it is the TCU tune. I have had the dog bone mount before tuning the car though and never had this issue before. Also, in Sport mode, it shifts just fine. Just seems to pop up when giving it about 50% throttle in Drive mode and it shifts at like 3000 RPMs...

Other than that issue though, I am thoroughly enjoying the new tune. Launch control is SO much more fun now. Can't wait for the local drag strip to open back up here next year.

    Hey Norm!

Wow! Don't think I've seen another Misano Red S3 out here! We totally should meet up sometime, whether it be at the track or at a car meet, and check each other's cars out!
Thank you, super happy with the IE tune so far. I have some hardware from them on the way to me as we speak! I totally agree with you, the S3 really is one hell of a bargain now and makes great gains with very little work! Feel free to PM sometime if you ever want to meet up. I'd love to bring my Camera out and take some cool photos of our cars!

Thank you! Yeah, unfortunately but fortunately IE spent a ton of time perfecting the tunes. Who are you tuned with?
I've heard from a few other people as well that these cars LOVE a couple gallons of ethanol mixed in. Going to have to play around with that sometime!

I have not upgraded the dogbone mount in my S3 yet, however, I did upgrade dogbone mounts in ALL of my other previous VW/Audi builds and they exhibited the same issue you speak of. The reason being that you make a TON more torque now everywhere in the rpm band even at different throttle percentages, so all the mounts are under much more stress. I noticed in my other cars and in my S3, if you shift above 4k rpms, that problem goes away because there's less actual load on the mounts. Believe it or not, having the upgraded dogbone mount helps a bit, but you'll see that problem completely resolved if you upgrade your actual engine/trans mounts too.

But yes LC is incredible now! I used mine last night taking a friend for a ride, 0-130 happens in no time at all! I'm going to hit up the drag strip too, once the season starts back up again. I do generally have a DA of 6000-8000ft out here in CO during racing season though, so I certainly won't be breaking any world records LOL

I'm currently with eurodyne. I also like the fact that IE is willing to adjust your tune after you send them logs for optimal performance.

Nice, are you enjoying Eurodyne so far? And yes I totally forgot to mention that with IE you can in fact datalog the car, email them the datalogs, and they can make revisions for you! It's a great feature!

Whoa whoa whoa... wait a sec....

I can just mix in some e85 with standard premium and this is SAFE?

I'm stage 2, APR tuned, and have plenty more performance mods than Stage 2 requires.

I'll give this a run if this is a "safe" thing to do. But definitely would love a little confirmation first.... :)

I'm the original owner of my 2015 S3 - almost 4 years with her now (longest I've owned a car yet) and I'm still learning new things about this platform! Its endless and amazing.

I think it depends on the tune. I know United Motorsport tunes support a small amount of added ethanol, but Unitronic says not to with theirs. You need to ask APR to be sure. Don't trust anything anybody says on a forum with something like this.

Mixing ethanol into lower grade gas to bring up the octane, effectively does bring up the octane, but it also messes with the fueling. I definitely wouldn't say it's "safe", you will need to log and make sure you're not exceeding fuel trims and what not. I would recommend if someone needed to get to 93 with 91 octane to mix in some 100 or 104 octane rather than mixing in E85, which will not mess with the fueling.

Again, it depends on the tune. United Motorsport calibrates their tunes to be completely compatible with a certain percentage of added ethanol and they encourage customers to use it if they'd like, while Unitronic on the other hand does not, and tells customers they shouldn't add ethanol (and it appears IE doesn't calibrate their tunes for it either judging from this statement).

Thanks for the fantastic responses! Everything I needed to hear. I'll be switching up to UM at some point, but not because I dislike my APR tune.

Thanks! Have any pics of yours? I’d freak if I saw another S3 at HPR haha only other one I’ve seen at the track is Sarian Motorsport’s APR Stage 3+ S3. That’s a wicked car!

Maybe I'll see some S3's out there. I've seen Sarian's car; what a beast!

Wow! That certainly looks track ready lol. How are you liking your vents so far? I'm thinking about doing something with my hood for ventilation.

A track day with a bunch of S3's, all with different tunes and mods would be a great time! I would love to see how other setups drive. The vents are untested on the track so far. Hopefully they function as supposed. Definately see the hot air waves exiting the hood at stop lights. Removing the fender liners makes a bit of a mess. I had to tape some of the seams in the engine bay to prevent small rocks from getting everywhere. Nobody makes vents specifically for the S3 so it took a while to figure out.(probably nobody is dumb like me)

What kind of WHP do these cars put down on Stage 2? I see a large variance of numbers within the small number of dynos.

It was done on our Dynapack, with a separate altitude correction machine that we have. It helps us create base lines at sea level without actually being at sea level.

Nice man! Glad you're enjoying the downpipe! Today is the last day of our MQB sale so right now is the best time to order a tune!
