Best Way To Black Out Window Trim?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What is the common ways to black out your window trim.

I know that vinyl is one way but I have heard that only really works for about a year or two? Is there a more long term way? Remove trim, powerder coat?

Plasti-dip? Probably the worst looking and least durable, but it's an option!

I had mine removed and color matched to the body when I had to have my rear bumper painted.

I am doing this to my Camry this week using DYC emblem kit. Will send you pics. Should work fine.

What have you all been quoted price-wise for wrapping the trim? I’m planning on having it done this winter, but not sure what to expect for pricing.

Mine was 275 so yeah that 250-400 price range is good. Contact a couple different shops about it. I went with the cheapest since its only small and black.

Best Way To Black Out Window Trim?

People paying hundreds for something any novice can do, is beyond me..

I did mine 2 years ago with the following items off Amazon and it has held up very well. I use a power washer on my car when I detail it every other week, hasn’t peeled off yet.

For anyone wanting to save hundreds, here’s some quality vinyl film & precision knife.

I disagree that Plastidip will look like shit. If you take your time (I spent roughly 2.5 hours total) it can look very good. I realize the picture isn't an up-close but it is an option that can come out nicely if you have a little patience. Wrapping certainly can produce a nice result as well but for someone who doesn't mind taking a little time to try something themselves, it's a viable option.

Vinyl is probably your cheapest and best quality route if you DIY. Mine took me about three hours but most of that was getting the hang of it, if I had to do it again it would go much faster. I did gloss black (on black car) with Vivvid brand vinyl off amazon and a little tool kit. Still looks flawless after a year.

+1 on this. I also used this stuff and wrapped the trim. Looks OEM to me and I love it....however, I stupdily removed the metal from the rubber part of the trim and now I can't get it back on lol. I only did this on the lower door pieces thinning it would be easier to wrap.

Anyone else make this mistake and if so what is the best way to reconnect it with the rubber trim pieces? Should I remove the rubber as well to snap the metal back on?

I had mine done in vinyl last year for $150 and I got what I paid for. I highly recommend finding a reputable shop and even checking out their other work first.

If you attempt to DIY, I have found that 3M is much better than the Vivid stuff. YMMV

Dip has come a long, long way. I wouldn’t rule it out if you have a solid shop locally.

I really don’t see a reason why you’d pay anyone to do it unless you just don’t have any free time, guy quoted me $700 lol..told him to kick rocks.

Link I posted is for air release channels. Definitely recommend this option for minimizing any bubbles.

I just got a quote to chrome-delete wrap my Monsoon Grey Q5. Door Blades, Trunk Blade, Roof Rack, and Door Handles in Monsoon Grey. Window Trim, Fog Rings, and Grill in Black. They want $1135. I'm going to give it a shot by myself. I quit recently quit drinking and think this could be a satisfying project for me.

I had all the window trim and fog surround trim done, also installed new rear OEM rings.

    $250

Had it for a year with no issues and he matched the stock black trim really well.

AutoDip Spray. Much higher quality than Platidip and it shows in the final finish. It can be had in a larger variety of finishes and colors too.

how do you guys wrap the trim on the small window in the rear? that corner absolutely fucked my vinyl strip when i was trying to do it. mine came out great except for that curve.

Yeah the rear curve on the trim is a bitch to wrap, took me couple tries but this was the 3rd S4 I’ve done it to so I had some practice

I blacked out my window tims DIY, very easy to do if you're careful and patient but pretty hard to get it ''perfect''. Watched alot of ''ckwraps'' on youtube. Before you start you need to know you'll have to use a blade on the car to cut vinyl, there's risk there to cut paint, other trims such as rubber seal which you dont want to cut open you'll get all kind of water leaks inside (rubber is pretty tough and thick). The other important thing to know is prep, you'll have to tuck the vinyl inside or behind the trim with a squeegee so you need to clean the shit out of everything in and out with such light brush. I had remaining water in the bottom rubber and behind some trim so it didnt stick perfect in some area. Bumper accent were pretty easy to me with a heat gun. Stretching and bending the material can be a nightmare if you dont know much. Overall im glad i did it myself i might do it all over eventually. The blade part was the hardest for my OCD level when it comes to damaging my car.

    tips and material ;

I used vivid chrome delete pre-cut gloss black 40 FT (20 isnt enough)

Cheap heat gun and delicate exacto.

Perfectly clean and DRY use a blower if you have one

Rubbing alcohol as last step before applying.

the vinyl itself can get scratched and swirled.
