Going up one sidewall size to 245/50-R18 Winter Tires on 2017 A6

Good evening,

With winter upon us in Michigan I decided to purchase a set of winter tires. I was planning to get 235/50-R18s vs. the standard 245/45-R18s to get a little bit more sidewall to protect against potholes. However, I mistakenly bought 245/50-R18s which came today. Looking at tire comparison tools it increases the diameter by 0.9", or 3.3% vs. stock (245/45). Are these tires too big, or should i be fine with utilizing them? It was my mistake, but I don't want compound the problem by trying to save some money by keeping them and causing more issues.

I run 255/45/18 for my winter tires. I ran the tire size comparison between my size and yours... It's a .6" difference in height... So .3" more in each direction. There should be no problem fitting .3" of extra tire in there.

Thanks for replying. From the photo it looks like the clearance won't be an issue. The local tire shop which i was going to for getting them mounted advised against installing them because it was more than 3% larger than stock (that was their cutoff).

You will have some speedometer error that is all.

Did you ever end up trying this size? I'm about to buy winter tires and am trying to decide between 255/45r18 and 245/50r18. Much better selection available locally in the latter size.

Both will work easily, but with winter tires, a narrower tire, "45" will be better on ice or snow, the 255 is a bit taller also, both good things.
