Coilovers - What Are The Best Ones For a B8.5?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am in the market to get some coilovers on my 2014 B8.5 S4.

My goal is to try and stay under a $1000 and there are a few options that I have come across so far.

Curious to hear from all of you as to what you are using and what you like and dislike about your setup. Also if you can recommend a set up that you think is the best bang for the buck!

Some coilovers I have seen and have been pondering are: (in no particular order)

    - ST X Performance Coilovers ~ $850
    - BS racing BR Series Coilovers ~ $999
    - KSport Kontrol Pro Coilovers ~ $850
    - KW H.A.S Adjustable Spring Coilovers ~ $650
    - Euro Street Series Coilovers ~ $899
    - Solo -Werk Coilovers ~ $550

I was also contemplating the H&R Street Performance Coilovers, but are they worth the $1300 compared to these other options???

    Thanks!

Under 1k, I'd stick to shocks and springs.

You get what you pay for really..... I used to go cheap and go the lowering springs route on past cars. I went KW V2's for my 2014 S4 and I will always spend money on suspension for any new car down the road. Makes a world of difference.

Just my opinion and the V2s fit my driving style.

There's no 'real' magic potion when it comes to coil over kits. The cost is really in the materials used in construction. In my experience there's a lot of shared components used between several manufactures but each with slight changes. So to be clear I'm not suggesting that there is no discernible between the brands, I'm just saying that quite a few brands - high and low end components are shared with quality of construction being the main differentiating factor.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

Cost goes to construction and R&D. Dampening technology has come forward a lot recently and the more expensive suspension components do relate to a better quality product (functionally and durability wise).
If you want to keep it under 1k I'd suggest lowering springs with a comparable dampener. I"m running HR OE springs with Bilstein B8 shocks and it's a good set up for road use - not stellar but good. Total cost prob close to 1k with install if not slightly higher.
I'm shopping coils for my S2000 right now and will probably go with Ohlins new DVS (Dual Flow Valve) Road and Track Coils. Those run about 2k for example.

+ cheap coilover are worth less than a good setup of shock and spring. None of your choice can be considered ''best''.

So there is a fairly new thread talking about H&R Springs and the Bilstien B8 shocks, it sounds like a good set up, I guess my question is if you say it runs $1000 or more why not just get the H&R Sport coilovers? They are $1300. Any thoughts?

I just don't understand why anyone would want coilovers under 1k. At that price point you are getting an adjustable spring body and the cheapest piece of crap damper they can find. It's not tuned for the vehicle just the right length. You would be so much better off with a spring and bilstein or Koni shock in that price point. The stock dampers (rebound, compression, quality and longevity) are way better than any 1000 dollar coilover.

Does your car have Audi drive select dampers?

Out of all your options, I would choose ST coilovers

If you have drive select the your existing dampers are amazing. I'm working with a company to turn them into an active system electronically, should be out in the spring. If that's the case, get a moderate spring like the Eibach, 034 dynamic +, or the H&R OE and wait for the controller.

I have heard just by going with springs the shocks and structs begin to fail very qucikly, or is that only cars without drive select?

It really depends on how much they lower. With a moderate lowering its not that bad, also if you adjust the shocks electronally you can adapt for it a bit. So leave it in dynamic so that it can handle the higher spring rate.

BC with Swift springs are the best bang for your buck coilovers imo. The Swift spring make a huge difference in ride quality

I have had ST coil overs on my 2014 A5 for 8 months and so far things are fine. I was told the ST's are made by KW, the difference being KW uses stainless steel for their housing and ST uses galvanized, so if you're in an area with a lot of snow/ice/salt you might want to go with the stainless.

+1. You're not going to get anything decent under $1K. Given the amount of labour required to install coil-overs, don't cheap out. KW V3 or Bistein PSS9 (if available for our cars) are probably good places to start.

This is false..i'm running solo-werks coils and they ride amazing, zero complaints and way better than springs with stock shocks by far. Best bang for the buck also install them yourself!

My car has that drive select button but that doesn’t mean the suspension changes right? It seems only transmission, steering and sound are the variables.
