Soooooo ,, can i ask a dumb question ?? do we have EGR ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have my engine in bits and I cant see any signs of Exhaust gas recirculation. As this is my first Turbo car I was wondering if EGR is even possible ? I have not analyzed every component on the engine but if this car has EGR I cant figure out how it works

    Thanks

The B8 motor does not have an EGR.
The PCV separates oil out of the crankcase gases that it is venting, due to excessive crankcase gas pressure, to either the intake manifold (when vacuum present) or turbocharger (when boost present).
I believe an EGR is doing something with the actual exhaust gases.

VVT/AVS has pretty much replaced the need for a separate EGR valve mechanism. By varying the cam lift, advance and duration the exhaust/intake mixing can be controlled by the ECM and increase or decrease the overlap as needed.

I found this on another forum, it's what old guy said: "There is no EGR valve or passage on a TSI. EGR is accomplished with valve overlap, controlled by the variable valve timing. Altering ECU valve timing tables would be the only way to alter amount of EGR." I guess EGR is a concept as much as a device.

Interesting whitepaper on timing subjects, also discusses external EGR vs internal EGR (apparently, EA888 uses internal EGR).

Ice, have you seen the SSPs on our engine? Search google for ssp 922903 and 824803. There's likely some changes for B8.5, but interesting info none the less.

Thanks Guys I will have a read over.

I thought it was a dumb question but the information that comes back from a dumb question sometimes can be really enlightening . I just downloaded the docs mentioned and they are absolutely fascinating . Makes rebuilding my engine a lot more interesting that is for sure.

So explain me this: when I check readiness for emissions testing there is a test for EGR and it is passed!

You do have EGR. It's called "internal" rather than "external" EGR. Controlled by the VVT.
