    Radar detector mount location ideas

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all,

Our city has a lot of LE presence, so planning to hard wire a radar detector, most probably will be a Uniden R3. The blendmount is a good solution, but almost third of the price of the detector itself and also the mirror is already low, so will mount real low. Also mounting it on the windshield above the mirror will hinder the sunglass holder opening. When I was shopping, came across a S4 listing and stated it has steath/hidden radar detector mounted. So would like to see all your suggestions for other alternatives.

    Thanks in advance.

Well mine is right here. Mostly due to laziness. The wiring run was so short. Placement isn't bad IMO either

Keep in mind my Uniden R3 is hardwired but here is my setup. Yes this placement will slightly reduce rear radar dection but I can live with it. That clear thing in between the mirror and detector is to keep it from bouncing as I have a rear facing dash camera attach below the detector. From the outside this is not very noticeable, but I do have a all black interior.

Lol, I too have it in a similar location in my other car, same reason, lazy. Thanks.

Awesome, thanks for the photos. Is that a blend mount? And the reason for the dashcam facing rear?

I like this idea using just the suction mount near the rearview, gives you an option to relocate unlike blend mount. Thanks for sharing.

Do you guys leave your radar mounted when the car is parked? I don't since don't want to entice shady ppl to break in.

I mounted mine high on the windshield and just to the left of the mirror. It's hard to see from the outside. No problem getting to the sunglass holder, and I always remove the V1 when leaving the car.
No reason to leave it baking in the hot Florida sun.

Below is my post for a custom built Valentine V1 mount, but you can use the same basic idea for making your own custom R3 mount.

I am thinking about the same location, but using this https://www.ebay.com/itm/1x-Permanen...72.m2749.l2649

Thanks for confirming the access to the sunglass holder, the above solution is permanent unlike the suction cups. In Texas, I have found it hard to keep the suction cups lose their grip and do not want the radar dropped. Your solution looks creative as well. Appreciate it.

Currently, I leave it on the dash with a removable pad and leave it in the cubby.

    sailakfan,
I also got tired of the suction cups losing their grip and having the radar detector suddenly drop. No fun when you're on the highway!

I considered an Ebay solution like the one you mentioned, and it certainly could meet all your needs. Just remember the radar detector must be as level as possible for maximum range.
Will you be able to bend the mount if necessary? Just food for thought.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!

I went more custom / stealth. Went with the Beltronics STIR Plus.

Cannot see anything anywhere. Installed a cutoff switch to turn off if I get pulled. Requires a professional install though.

I’ll take pics tomorrow but everything installed in the ashtray so door can close to hide it if pulled over. Rdd unit installed in engine bay. Installed Laser Interceptor jammer with 4xsensors as well.

I have my R3 mounted with suction cups (that it came with) right to the left of the rear view mirror (but out of the way of the sunglass holder) and I piggy backed off a fuse off the driver side fuse panel. For all those who mounted it down below or at the bottom of the windshield, doesn't that block radar coming in from the rear? I thought we had to have clear line of sight or as close to it as possible.

I don't have much experience with radar detectors, what is the best radar out in the market currently? My current budget is around $500.

Uniden R3, Escort Max 360, radenso Pro M, among others.

EDIT: If I had $500 to spend on a detector, it would be the radenso Pro M. They (radenso) are the best at limiting false alerts, and the Pro M is tiny in comparison. I am about to pull the trigger on the radenso XP after much research (I don't really want to spend as much as the Pro M costs).

Great resource here to get you started.

The V1 was the benchmark for a long time, but it's development has stayed static for some time, so other brands have begun to surpass it. I have run a V1 mounted on the passenger sun visor and hard wired, for several years now, and am still happy with the performance.

The R3 is definitely hot shit in the detector world right now. If it had Arrows like the V1, I'd be all over it. At least for now, the V1 with custom sweeps set-up and the V1 Driver app, is still good enough for me.

For the heck of it I ran a Uniden R3 up front and a Uniden R1 in the rear on a summer road trip. And this was in a suv so they weren't causing each other to false. I was detecting stuff miles away before it would even show on Waze. I had to take down the rear one as it was simply overkill.

Nice, I too had these three in my final list when I narrowed it down to the R3.

yeah. sometimes i wish the r3 had arrows. but its pretty rare that i actually need them. once in a blue moon ill get a ka hit and i cant find it. but i just chalk it up to him sitting somewhere with i/o.

I went with mirror mount for best signal pickup and power source. I have an Escort 9500ix and found better price mount on Amazon for $32.29 and power cable for $18.99. They have brackets for most popular detectors. Fit was fine and mount looks clean. Way cheaper than Blendmount.

I have a V1 that mount under the middle headrest in the back using an enclosure I made. Then I'm using a VEI gauge pod upfront as the concealed display (still need to tuck the wires away better)

That is really creative and never thought about the middle rear head rest, thanks for sharing.

Went Uniden R3 with blendmount and mirrortap. The R3 has multiple colors for the LCD and the orange matches the MMI nicely. I was pulled over once with it on under a case of mistaken identity (cops were looking for a guy in a "blue sports car") and the cop and his partner said nothing about the detector. Looks more OEM i think mounted on the mirror and matching color of lighting.

Yes. For many years now. Valentine. I don’t live in a bad area though.
