    (Both Used) B9 S4 vs. F80 M3

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Looks like one can pick up a slightly used B9 S4 or a used F80 M3 (~2016) for around the same price. The mileage differential isn’t too much as well. I know it depends on everyone’s individual preferences and/or the need for AWD, but the fact that these M3’s slightly used are near B9 S4 territory makes me wonder if this is a logical step up for someone...

Somewhat interested to know why you are talking about two cars that aren’t b8’s in the B8 forum?

For some reason my phone won’t let me post there. Plus it makes some sense putting it in the B8 forum since it may be that some B8 owners are thinking of the same question for the future. Admittedly it maybe been better in the chatterbox.

I honestly don't think many people on here want or with consider a b9 in the future

Why would anyone sell a b9 S4 , so soon unless there were issues with car?
The M3 is a different type of car it could have a MT . OR DSG type like b 8!, but the b9 with only have an automatic trans & AWD which you may not need.

I agree. I would think many people would jump to a higher S model or go m3 if they prefer that class size of car. I’m def going m3 or so if I get another sedan. I find myself starring at them as they drive by!

I think you know the answer you're gonna get here being an Audi forum. But Audi > BMW. BMWs ride much more harsh, cheaper interiors, and the F80s sound like poop. The only thing they've got going for them is you can still get them in a 6MT

Not in the same category. The F80 M3 is on a different level then an S4 (even current gen B9). With that said, as others have mentioned, it does depend on ones use/need for AWD. Personally what I would do as someone who "needs" AWD is get some form of a beater AWD vehicle and get a 2015 M3 for nice days. The next gen M3 will be available in AWD so at that point, unless the RS4 is brought to north america, Audi won't have a fighting chance in that segment.

They handle alot better and they are track worthy out of the box too... But that doesnt matter to many folks here.

I was in the same predicament the month before last in deciding a new AIO sport sedan; I did look at used F80s, but to get the "same" options on it as there are on the B9 (Led headlights, red/orange/etc leather seats, upgraded nav/audio system, better wheels), I would have to look at 17's and those were approx $10k higher then a NEW B9...

There is little to no argument that the M3 is a better, more guttural sport sedan, but with the lack of tech compared to the B9 and the high cost of repairs down the road (I keep my cars for loonng time), I chose the B9. I got the spec I wanted, new, and didn't lose much in depreciation (thanks Stephen for the good deal!).

If you're looking for the power, and fun of a sport sedan and are ok with sacrificing the comfort, etc Dr.Jekyl Mr Hyde nature of the B9, then M3 for sure. My B9 similar specced M3 would cost $78-$82k.

before the Kiddo, I always had a sports car (In this case it would be the M3) and then a $5 or $6k grand cherokee for shitty days or small errands. Since I have been 18 years old, I have always owned (2) cars at the same time and don't see that ever ending. Also, helps when my car is in the shop getting modded or in for maintenance having my other car.

lol, such a typical fanboy reply.

The ONLY think factual and accurate in your "statement" which inferred, was that the Audi's interior is nicer generally speaking. The rest is the usual hogwash that fanboys (on both sides) spit out.

    I have a 2018 B9 S4
    I had a 2016 F80 M3

The M3 is in a whole different category, and again, interior aside, it will still best a RS5. It performs better, it looks more aggressive, with the M-Perf exhaust it sounds better, and not sure wtf you are talking about "harsh", but in comfort mode it drove perfectly fine, and in Sport Plus it was a beast in the track.

    Get real.

I've been contemplating this same decision....... I live in the chicagoland area and love my current B8.5 S4 with Blizzaks for winter. I also have a Yukon Denali which is at my disposal 80-90% of the time as my wife takes the metra train to work (we live a block from the station) and she has a GSA government vehicle when she has to travel for her job (she's active duty Army). I've strongly been considering picking up an F80 M3 in the spring when I plan to replace my current S4. I would run a set of winter tires on it for the cold/snow months which I'm sure would let me get around just fine but after having AWD with winter tires, I'm just really hesitant to give up having and AWD car. With having the truck, am I over thinking it???? I'm pretty impressed with some of the early results from the guys who have tuned their B9's with the DTUK and JB4 piggybacks......... it's really making it a hard decision for me!!!!

The only legitimate reason a B8/8.5 driver can say he wouldn’t get a b9 is the lack of MT option....
that being said if you don’t like the new s4 you don’t have a problem with the car, you have a problem with yourself

JB4 equipped on E85 mix over here and this car is a rocket

Anyway I agree, the M is in a different ball park. RWD in the Midwest was a real deal killer for me. But the S55 motor with just down pipes and E85 tune is a 600whp capable motor. Pretty incredible machine if you don’t mind only driving it 6 months out of the year in snow territory.

I'd say test drive both as they're two totally different cars. The M3 is a lot more raw and race inspired, more comparable to an RS line Audi. As far as a daily I prefer the S4 as although it's sporty it's going to ride a little softer and quiter. If you're going to track it occasionally then the M3 is probably you're better bet. Unless it's just an occasional drag race, in which case the S4 has the AWD advantage. I haven't looked up the specs, but I'd imagine the mpg on the S4 will be substantially better as well. But in having owned a e46 M3 I can definitely say there is no more fun of car than an M3. If you have another car you have access to perhaps consider it, but if it's the only car you'll be driving, I think the S4 is better. But again drive both and see if you think you can live with the M3 on a daily basis.

My next ride is a CTS-V. Faster than both the S4 and M3 for a little more $$$.

Way less money than an RS7 or M5 and similar performance.

When all is said and done I spent about as much on my S4 with tunes to date than it would have cost to buy a faster car.

Same boat here except I'm also considering the RS3. The F80 is very mod friendly, but 500+ whp that you can't put down doesn't do much, let alone the horror stories of the crank hub issues. The desire for AWD, and the intoxicating sound has me leaning towards RS3 for now
