    Code p164e after oil change

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Received the following from the APR Mobile app shortly after an oil change:

Code “p164e oil pressure regulating valve electrical malfunction”.

Audi service manager said not to worry and they would look at it at the next service.

    2017 S6 with APR stage 1 & TCU.

    Any experiences or insight appreciated.

If you have a VAGCOM cable and VCDS cable (if you don't get one! You can get a 3VIN cable for $199 at Europaparts.com) clear the code and see if it comes back. Likely that the oil change may have tripped a sensor that needs to be reset.

I am having the exact same problem! Changed my oil and code came up, used vag-com cleared and was gone for about 5 miles and came back. I have tried to clear it numerous times and sometimes it comes back instantly. I can’t figure it out, but I did do the pcv oil cap test and it’s a lot of suction and engine starts idling up and down and wants to die. So maybe it’s the valve? I got no other codes except that and o2 code from apr downpipes since I have epl it’s not coded out.

Oh btw I have a 2017 s6 18k miles on epl stage 2 with tcu tune.

I would look into it. The 4.0T has a complex ECM controlled oil pressure system.

    From Audi Self-Study Program 920223

Oil Pressure Regulation Valve N428 is switched by the ECM.
Oil Pressure Switches F22 (high) and F378 (low) . There are two oil pressure switches above the oil filter. They monitor the two pressure stages.
A third oil pressure switch, Level 3 F447, is installed for monitoring the oil pressure of the piston cooling jets.
Piston Cooling Nozzle Control Valve N522 controls oil jets under the piston crowns.

Maybe check to see if the two oil pressure sensor connectors near the oil filter are seated properly.

Thanks all for the replies and wwhan for the diagram. I will take the car into a local Audi guy next week to check the connections and report back.

Keep me updated ... I have been hesitant to bring it in because I have intake, exhaust, heat exchanger, etc... hoping I would find a solution so I won’t have to. It’s not my daily so its just been sitting till I decide what I should do.

Have you guys tried the oil cap test for the pcv valve? If there’s a lot of suction and engine start to bog like mine, then maybe bad pcv causing the error or vice vesa? Just a thought

Just back from the local, non-dealership, Audi guy. He checked the 2 oil pressure switches near the filter and oil pressure sensors and found them all fine. The code is reappears after clearing. Off to the dealership (and ECU / TCU flagging) after Thanksgiving. Will update in a few weeks.

Unsatisfying trip to Audi dealership. They could not get the code to show up “consistently” and after checking switches and connections said not to be concerned. They stated they had no confidence in the APR dongle/app and would not consider codes from that device reliable. Lastly, they said if I got a dash light or felt something wrong to bring it back. No mention of flagging me for the APR software.

    Code returned on way home.

So it doesn’t throw a check engine light?

Did not throw a check engine light for me. Its just a soft code stored. Ive been driving my car with the code for at least 4k miles so I dont think its serious but id love to know what it actually means.

Damn that’s weird mine throws the engine check light and I don’t know if it’s in my head or feels like the turbos are not building boost like normal. I guess I’ll drive with it and see what happens . If turbos go then another reason to go to stage 3

Haha thats my excuse to go stage 3 (when the turbos blow)...didnt you mention you had a CEL for o2 sensors from downpipes?

I do, but when I clear the codes in vag-com the o2 sensor codes stay off for a while. The check lights come back and I run it again it will only show p164e.

No CEL for me. Just throwing the P164e code via APR Mobile. All seems fine so I am just going to drive it until I get back to the Boston area where there are more experienced Audi mechanics.

    Code p164e after oil change

Maybe it could be the oil viscosity but it’s just a guess because I was using castrol edge 5w40 fully synthetic euro and was fine but this time I used pennzoil 0w40 euro formula, got it on sale for 24.99 5qts. Do you know what oil they used for you?

I might try to change it to M1 0w-40 (Walmart had it on sale for 19.95 5 qts) and see what happens even though I only have like 500miles on this oil change.

This may or may not be related, I was getting p164b, oil pressure switch on my 2012 A6 3.0T. Ended up being a faulty F22 switch.
