    Vinyl wrap

    Hello all,
I have a 2018 sq5 and plan to vinly wrap the window surround and the 2 roof rack bars. A few questions.

    1. Do most use the flat black or the shinny black that matches the current strip color between the front and back windows.
    2. How well does the wrap hold up with time? I only do hand washes or no touch car washes.
    3. Got a quote of $600 from a reputable tint/wrap shop(car wraps are part of their business). Does that sound bout right?

    Thanks for your input

    Vinyl wrap

I had my A3 wrapped and it lasted about 2 years. The corners near the back side windows peeled up and need redone. I am a Detailer so it got taken good care of and never through an automatic. I would do gloss black though instead of matte. I paid $225 for mine to get wrapped but it was only the window trim not the roof rails.

I did that to mine but the lower BO trim on the bumpers is OEM. Your quote matches what I paid. I went with gloss black match up with the other trim. I’ve had mine for about a year so far with no issues at all. But I hand wash and only use air to dry the car. I’m very pleased with how it turned out.

Cmoore86 referred me to his vendor for my B-pillars, and I've been ecstatic. Your quote certainly sounds reasonable - those roof rails are very labor-intensive and with this type of job you definitely get what you pay for.

Also trust his advice on the B9 treatment. I went with gloss for my pillars simply to match the OEM pieces that attract swirl marks like mad. If I was trying to capture the BO look I would've gone with matte on the roof rails, but again...I'm B8.

The mirrors are OEM carbon fiber mirror caps. Sourced from Europrice.

Yea I was torn on matte vs gloss for the roof rails. I think OEM is matte black on the B9 BO trim. I am happy I went gloss though. Especially with my ceramic coating. The paint is so shiny that matte black may have been too much contrast for me.

    1. whichever you prefer. I think most are gloss black tho.
    2. My wraps held up fine over 2+ years here. In the summer I try to park in a covered garage. I noticed in direct light(heat) all day, it may start peeling up.
    3. that's alot for just window trim and roof rails. Don't forget the grille and lower bumper.

I paid much less than that and work was completed in my garage in addition to ceramic coating lol.

Would definitely recommend david @dac custom detailing, he's in the area.

Any reason this is preferred over just painting them? I spoke to my paint shop guy and he quoted me $600 to paint my roof rails gloss black and the top caps on my mirrors ibis white (didn't ask about window trim), but unless you are just trying it out to see if you like it, i would think a more permanent change would be a better solution.

For me, the same reason as I why I didnt just get the OEM parts. Because you'd have to take the rails and window trim off. Rails require dropping the headliner, and on the B9 the rear window trim is stuck on the actual window glass with adhesive. So you have to remove the rear glass to get that trim off. I know they could be painted on the car...but I wouldnt risk the overspray and possibly not getting the paint around all the corners.

    Good input here!

To add, I had my A5 windows trims wrapped, and they looked perfect still after being on the car for over 4 years.

I also sourced my carbon caps from @[email protected]

Thats for all the advice. I’m going gloss black on the window trim and roof rails.
Will leave mirrors as is. Quitely indentifies car as an “S” model.

I deal with vinyl on a regular basis and most of the industry standard vinyls are rated for 5years, such as 3m 1080. Now that doesn't mean it will just start peeling off at 5 years, but at 5 years it will get a lot harder to remove (still removable) but it might come off in pieces. 600 does sound high though. It's a fun project to do yourself if you're up for that and a hell of a lot cheaper provided you already have a heat gun. Avery is also a good brand and I've had it on boats in saltwater that has lasted over 10 years, but 1080 is alot easier to work with. Vvivid is also a good brand to work with. Also I read someone else had problems with their vinyl peeling on the edges, use 3M 94 Primer on them and they wont come off unless you want them too. They come in little crush pens too which make life easy

Definitely going to tackle this in the spring...or during a warm winter chinook weekend. Always though the chrome clashes with the blue paint.

any photos of how the wrap looks at the ends of the window trim? a number of videos on installs but they all seem to skip how to tuck or fold the vinyl at the ends.
