    RS5 mmi/map update

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I can't seem to find a specific answer to how to update the mmi software and/or the maps. I purchased a t-mobile Sim card since its only $10/mo (2gb of 4g data, unlimited 3g) but I'm not sure if this will update both or just give me some Google online search features and a wifi Hotspot.

I tried to sign up for audi my connect but it requires me to put in my Vin as well as Sim card number... So I'm not sure if the update is there or elsewhere. Or if there is another location to download these or if I have to upgrade the mmi unit itself in order to perform a software update. My car is a 2013 Audi RS5 (and I'm in love with it)

With a SIM card installed you will be able to activate the google earth feature for a satellite view but as far as I know, the actual navigation map has to be purchased.
I just had mine updated at its last service, it was approximately $250 for the update and the software is uploaded and then activated from a code which in my case was sent from Germany.

Was the update worth the $250?

That's what i'm wondering too....does the update offer additional settings or any improvements? But a constant map update would be great because of all this random construction and detours around town

That all depends on the city you live in I guess, Dubai is like the staircases from Harry Potter, constantly changing, building new bridges, roads and housing developments, etc.
They also added 3D buildings to the navigation map so you do get a nice 3D view of the area you’re driving through. There no additional features and no other functionality for me but I cannot use Audi Connect in the Middle East so not sure what that would add.

Speak to your local Audi, the update comes in a plastic wallet, inside it is a list of everything that’s added so you should get a good idea.

    *Edit
I very much doubt they would add construction road closures to the map unless you have traffic activated in your Nav, I use Waze for traffic info.

You can get gray market updates through eBay for about 1/5th the cost. I upgraded my MMI that way but did not update the NAV as I never use it.

I got my sim chip and installed it yesterday, which was great because there was alot of accidents on the highway lastnight and it alerted me of lane closures ahead as well as gave me a google earth view of the city. So i'm 99% sure it updates the maps that way too because it also showed road construction areas on the highway. I plan to make a 2 hour road trip saturday so I will see how well it does with only the sim. audiconnect website still won't allow me to sign in though, it keeps saying invalid sim when i type the number in and I heard from somewhere I can download the MMI update from there.

You’re getting traffic updates, not map updates.

Traffic on the Audi is performed through Siriusxm, at least here in the States.

    RS5 mmi/map update

I’m actually thinking about getting something like this:

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F153232495160

~140 and looks like it should include everything to update maps and fw.

That looks very promising! However the bottom right of my screen says 2G, will this work on mine?

Uhh I think you’ll have to go into your MMI info screen and determine what mmi system you have and find the right eBay posting for your mmi version. The seller sells multiple versions for each mmi version.

That’s what I did. Sent the seller my MMi version and he sent the right software update package.

Works pretty flawless I assume? Does anyone happen to know what the map update cadence from Audi? I know in my dads older Mercedes, they did them on like 2-3 year cycles.

I had the latest update and maps installed and it made almost no difference except adding some roads that weren't there on the old 2013 maps.

I say its NOT worth the money. I hate the stock MMI and nav. I just installed a phone mount so now I just use Waze or Google maps on my phone. I recommend RSNav or a phone mount.

This. I learned the hard way. Updated mmi and maps and got AT&T and still no traffic. Only to find out I had to use shitty Serious XM. Not worth it.

I agree 100%. I am holding out for some brain child to workout how to add Android Auto or Apple Car Play to MMI.

Is that everything you need? I just upgraded to MMi 3g+, still working on bugs actually, and it’s overall so much better.

Then I get a 2019 Altima rental with 14 miles on it and Apple car play. Seamless and completely awesome. Now I want Rsnav.

I also hit a deer in that car, had 50 miles on it I think. Lol

They have an entire new unit with larger screen. They have an older version which is just mirroring. I’d contact them directly. Guy that owns RSNav is an Audizine member and is pretty responsive.

I think this is the one they have for the B8.5 but check with them. Scroll down and you can see they make an Apple iOS version too.

I will have to check with them and save a few nickels, but I really like the RSA-8 system. Also I do not understand the accessories list, if my current system has these features, is the new system not going use the existing equipment?

Keep in mind that there's a thread going on that's indicating that the Google Earth map overlay will stop working at the end of 2020 due to a major software change by Google. Any 2018 and older Audi will no longer have the Google Earth map overlay, but would still have Google search and other features. That's only 2 more years of use.

Would that not just be fixed by a software update from Audi?

The software change from Google is targeting newer graphics hardware and cannot be fixed by any firmware update. The graphics cards used in 2018 and older Audis will no longer be compatible to Google's software.

Here's the whole thread on this matter... Clicky click
