Diy Oil change tips and observations...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So after doing my first oil change and not knowing what tools i exactly needed, and the DIY’s didn’t say what oil filter tool was needed, i will cover all that now. First if you owned an mk5 and/or an mk6 gti or golf R you might have these already as i did.

For oil filter removal you’ll need THIS 74mm and 14 fluke socket:

And for removing the oil from the oil filter before removing the oil filter housing and causing a mess you’ll need THIS:

Other optional stuff you might want that i already owned are jack pads and jack stand covers as well. Here are the optional stuff i had already that made things better:

There are a total of 7 t25 screws three on each side and one in the front of belly pan, 3 t45 bolts (overkill) on rear side of belly pan. The t45 torx bolts had blue loctite so expect a little more ratcheting, they really wanted to hold down this pan lol. This car took 7.5 quarts of oil!!! so get 8 quarts! Oil filter has to click into position inside oil filter housing, if not it will be annoying to line up with filter housing base.

Any questions or things you can add feel free to reply or message me. Hope this helps those weekend warriors/backyard mechs

I have the same oil filter drain tool and I have this oil filter wrench:
    https://www.amazon.com/ABN-Filter-So...+oil+filter+vw
Probably identical to the MotiveX wremch. You can drain the filter without the tool but there is a nearby coolant hose that you don't want to get oil on.

Surprisingly none of my funnels would fit in the oil fill hole so I bought one of those long neck funnels and chopped it down until I got a good fit.

This is the first car I have to remove the under-tray which is annoying but it's pretty easy job.

that's not too bad, it cost me $80 for 8 quarts of oil and filter plus crush washer. liquid moly 4200 top tec, better than dealer oil.

i try to stay away from dealer period specially for oil changes after what happened with my MK6 GTI and getting the free oil changes from them, they like to over tighten the pan bolt and it started to develop a leak and the only way for it not to leak was by over tighten it.

Did mine today on my dads lift. It was really easy. Look about 1 hour from first driving up on lift to backing off lift. I went slow during. Bought my oil and filter from europarts. Couldn’t be more pleased.

Did anyones 1st oil change factory drain plug not include a washer?
T45 for drain plug, and 3 back belly pan bolts.
Anyone figure out why the back three are huge and have blue (compared to other 7) lock tight?

I meant T45, my typo, will correct. I did not inspect, but why are those 3 torx at the end of belly so big and necessary?

Guess, cuz bolted to sub, why not use a bigger bolt on aluminum.

    Mine only needed 7 qts.

That is weird, 7 brought me to max.
I let the pan gavity drain forever, also drained the heck out of the oil filter housing.
Had a God aweful startup sound after 7 qts added for a couple of seconds, like slight grinding gears.

What oil. Mine started smooth as butta. I used liquid moly top tech 4200 they where liter bottles. So I’m pretty close to 8 quarts.

    Used Motul 8100 X-clean+

Had the car in N, so I could move the car back or fwd, to get centered on the lift, maybe starting in N was the reason? Coulda moved the shifter a tad without realizing somehow? No idea.

I'm about to perform my first oil change. How do you reset the oil service timer after changing the oil?

Really, I looked and couldn't find it. I will look again.

Can someone post a picture of the MMI screen on their 2017 RS3 where you reset the oil service timer?

Nevermind, I found it. There is a side menu in vehicle settings.

Go to audi drive select screen, hit the round dial to the left, it should bring you to the area where you will see service and checks, select, service intervals, reset oil change interval, yes. Done

there's always small dusting, it's when you get fingernail shavings when you have to worry. I've built motors and run magnetic plugs. Just learn not to freak out when you see little things because every motor has small bits of metal that make their way down. I have seen canister filters with magnetic rings on them for those that want to trap that debris there.

I paid $170 for my oil change at the 5k interval. I was told by the service advisor that my oil would be changed removing the bottom oil plug and not using the suction device. Paying for the oil change you get a decent carwash and also a free inspection sheet at no cost.

Decent carwash at the dealer?? You should see my dealer's carwash. Looks like the gates of hell.
