    Different Steering Wheels in Q5's

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have looked at a number of Q5's as I prepare to buy one. They happen to be TDI's - not that it matters. I have come to realize there are two different steering wheels. I can't figure out why there is a difference or what package or anything seems to dictate which cars have which wheel. It doesn't seem to matter if they have MMI or B&O or side assist or anything else. This is making me a little crazy. Some wheels have a round center and the bottom spokes come together as they go down from it. The other wheel has an oblong, almost football shaped center, and the bottom spokes go toward a '4' and '7' o'clock position. Believe it or not, it almost seems like the round wheels are black and the others are brown but surely this can't be the case. Does anybody know?

S-Line wheel is the round center. Typically flat bottomed as well.

Also, the 2014+ model year changed overall wheels layout.

Thanks for the reply but none of the ones are S-Line or have flat bottoms. I am familiar with the S-line wheels.

What model, year, specs have you been looking at? When I was searching, the 2.0T, 3.2/3.0T and TDI models all had different wheels.

I have a 2014 3.0T with S-Line+, Premium Plus, Navi, Titanium package and it’s got the round center with flat bottom. Identical wheel to my 2014 S4.

That is the same center but without the flat bottom. I continued looking last night online. I have now seen both types in all colors. I am looking at 2015 and 2014 TDI. None have S-line. Most have MMI and B&O. I wish I knew an easy way to post pics. I originally thought there were two spokes coming together at the bottom on the wheel like yours, but it is one solid spoke. I had to verify this morning on my wife's A5 Convertible. Is it okay to post a link to photo of a car I find online?

Maybe I can make this SORT OF easy without posting pics. If you google '2014 Audi Q5 dash' and hit the IMAGES button - look at the 1st image and you will see the wheel with the round center and three spokes. If you look at the 3rd image you will see the sort of oval shape four spoke wheel. Both are from 2014. Both have B&O. You can also hit other choices and find some that do not have MMI, either. You can also see them mixed and matched from other years. I just don't get it. My ADD has me hyper-focused on this now!!

I did your search and saw what you’re talking about. It appears to be linked to the version of MMI. IIRC, Audi updated the MMI in all of their cars in late 2013/early 2014. Some cars in MY2014 still had the old version of the MMI, which also used a different steering wheel to control it.

3 spoke round= equipped w/ sports interior package.
    3 spoke flat bottom= (Only 3.0T +TDI) S-line exterior + sports interior + s-line plus package

Glad to have a definitive answer - Thank you DAVE! So that prompts the question.....What else is in the 'Sport interior Package'?

Also, the SQ5 comes with full smooth leather the Q5 S-Line come with smooth/air. I prefer the smooth/air combo.

I believe there were subtle differences year-to-year. Page 38 gives you the spec for MY 2015:

    https://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/...5-brochure.pdf

On my '13 I also had the aluminum interior trim, but honestly I can't recall if that was part of the interior sport package or the S Line package. Echo the black headliner.

I love the sport seats - as I suspect do most folks who participate here - but some folks don't like the bolstering or the thigh extenders. If possible it's worth experiencing for yourself if possible. That said, the paddle shifters were a must-have for me and I didn't give much thought to anything else when I bought.

Front sport seats + paddle shifters

@mops, agreed. I love the way my perforated leather wheel looks.

Great info - thanks. I next to never see the sport seats in the used market. It is particularly more rare since I am looking for a color other than black. I just prefer the lighter colors - either the tan or the gray - even the saddle color.

Hope I'm not confusing things even more! I have a '17 Q5 3.0 TFSI. It has exterior S-Line, has the nav package with MMI and B&O, but does not have S-Line interior.

when i bought my Q5 in 2014 (b8.5), the options were 4 spoke (standard), 3 spoke (sport interior package, iirc) and 3 spoke flat bottom (not sure what package, if any, on the Q5, but i believe they were stock on the SQ5).

There were definitely changes throughout the years. I remember reading the various order guides to understand them when I was shopping for a Q.

FWIW, I have a 2016 Q5 3.0T S-Line with every option including sport interior package, comfort package, tech package, adaptive suspension, B&O etc. and I still only have a regular round steering wheel. :(

I really don't feel deprived, though. Given a choice, not sure I'd have chosen differently. I was focused on the engine, summer tire package, exterior trim and sound system. Wheel really did not matter.

So, will different model steering wheels fit the q5? I have a 2013 q5 3.0t with the basic 4 spoke wheel. Can I used a a4 steering wheel? As long as I swap the air bag since most flat bottom are round air bag. Is there any different in teeth for mounting? Or air bag connector issue?

I love my flat bottom wheel on my 2014 TDI S-Line, far and away the best steering wheel feel I have ever experienced.
